Kenner League/2019-2020 Hoyas Roster Impressions Player Capsules Thread:
*Will add more to this post when I have time. Feel free to add your own impressions in a post on this thread.
Omer Double Yurt7:
Bob Huggins has his IstanBull Deniz Kılıçlı (6-9, 290 lbs) and John Calipari "had" his Freddy Mercury, Enes Kanter (6-11, 250 lbs) but Omer Double Yurt7 (7-0 275 lbs) may be the best of the young Turks. Double Yurt7 will be a double double machine this year. At this level he may be unstoppable in the paint just like Jahlil Okafor (6-11 275 lbs) was unstoppable in college at Duke. Omer is really big yet mobile for his size. And knows how to take advantage of mismatches down low. (This is something that the smaller Jessie Govan (6-10 255 lbs) wasn't able to do, as he fell in love with the 3pt line and wouldn't take advantage of mismatches down low). Opponents will have to have someone that can somewhat match his girth because Yurt7 is immovable down in the box. Defensively, Yurt7 will be able to hold his spot and seal off his man for easy rebounds. He won't get pushed around. This will allow LeBlanc, Alexander, Gardner or possibly Wahab or Igofefe (?) the freedom to patrol the paint and be a rim protector without having to worry about boxing out or giving up the rebound. When Yurt7 is matched up with someone of similar size or a rim protector he has an aresenal of post moves to score/draw fouls and also has the ability to pull the defense outside with his perimeter shooting range.
Will Yurt7 get into foul trouble. Probably. But with the Freedom of Movement rules all big men get in foul trouble (unless you have a Pack Line system) now so it kind of equalizes things among big men. Double Yurt7 will leave the opposition Shaken not Stirred this year.
Mac MacLung, 6-2 185 Gate City
His point guard and passing skills are underrated. Was really effective running the show when there are floor spaces and finishes like LeBlanc.
Still not convinced that his 3pt shooting has dramatically improved watching Kenner. Still seems that he will either be very hot from 3 or else cold with a lack of consistency. Him and LeBlanc really get along well. With his height, in order for him to make the next level he will have to play PG in the Russell Westbrook, Steve Francis, Dennis Smith mode. I see the penetrating and passing skills already so it's just a matter of improving his defense and 3pt shooting.
Josh LeBlanc, 6-7 230 Louisiana
Looks great out there. Next step is for him to become more assertive offensively and from outside. If he does that he can have a Nigel Hayes type impact a the NCAA level.
Myron Gardner:
He's not hyper athletic but he's athletic like Josh Hart.
Doesn't quite reach the sky but can get up there like Josh Hart.
Built really solid with a man's body already like Josh Hart.
High skill level, High bball IQ like . .
I'm not saying he's Josh Hart but he reminds me of Josh Hart with his physique, measurables and style.
Hart played 21 min his freshman year. I expect 15-20 minutes from Gardner this year at the 2 and the 3. He will be hard to keep off the floor.
Terrell Allen (PG) 6-3 185 lbs DeMatha/UCF
The floor general. Calm and relaxed and lets the game come to him. Great lateral quickness and length translate to lockdown defense without fouling.
Gives us a great third college guard and gives us insurance in case Akino is playing poorly, injured or in foul trouble. Doesn't have to score to have an impact on the game offensively but can score if he has to (which prevent people from not guarding him. a problem we've had with players in the past.)
JaMorko Pickett (SF) 6-8 205 lbs
You can't coach Length. Worked really hard last year in trying to improve his in game ball handling and driving ability even though it was mostly not successful. But that's how you learn. And he's taken Coach Ewing's advice on what he needs to do to get to the next level. Still needs to add strength. Working really hard in the weight room.
Malcolm Wilson (PF) 6-11 205 lbs Ridge View, SC
Very long and tall. Seems to still be growing. Good shot blocker a young Dennis Rodman/John Salley hybrid. Explosive, and lightning quick 2nd and 3rd jumps which will make him a good rebounder a la Rubberband man Roy Tarpley. Could be red shirted to add muscle or may play backup to Josh LeBlanc and fill in at center. Intriguing.
Qudus Wahab (C) 6-10 230 Flint Hill
Big frame, variety of post moves. Seems a little short compared to Wilson and Yurt7. I've seen him listed as low as 6-9 and as high as 6-11. First impression was he didn't seem extremely explosive or athletic. Haven't seen enough of him to make an evaluation but he will be a serviceable backup center at the very least this year.
Timothy Igohoefe (C) 6-11 240 lbs NBA Africa
You can't coach length. 7 foot 7.5 wingspan.
Javhon Blair (SG) 6-3 189 Athletic Institue, Brampton, Canada
I think Ewing sees a lot of John Starks in him. Starks with less athleticism/size. But the intensity and no fear is there. I still am not convinced that he can do in the regular season what he regularly does in Kenner which is more of an All-Star game type setting. So will be interesting to see. Early in Kenner he was still doing his Canadian hop step/travel bad habit but later in Kenner he stopped doing it. I think overcoming that is crucial to his game since being called for that in Big East play had slowed his dribbling ability considerably.
