Cal, it's never too early to speculate!! Hahaha. Sample size of 2 games is certainly small and there is a lot of time and room to adjust expectations based on actual performance. However, I'm very glad to hear reports that 1) Yurt looks the part of a starting Big East center; and 2) Alexander is seemingly capable of playing the 3 position (and possibly the 2 and 4) effectively in the Big East.We add those pieces to James, Mac, and Josh a year older as sophomores, it's hard to imagine the team not improving upon the 2018-19 campaign. You needed Kenner to tell you that Yurt7 could compete as a starting Center in the BIG EAST after he averaged 13 & 7 with 2 BPG as a sophomore in another high level and very comparable ACC?? Also the staff has yet to whiff on a recruit . They have brought in 5 BIG EAST All Freshman Team members. Transfers like Malinowski and Dickerson have had successful moments. So I expect Alexander who was a JUCO All American to contribute in the BIG EAST. Outside of seeing the freshman, I don't think Kenner tells anyone anything. Calhoya is right. We will learn more from the week in the Bahamas then the month in Kenner. To many people let essentially pick-up games dictate what they think of players. There is no upside for the players to play hard in this rec league type setting.. Re: "the staff has yet to whiff on a recruit" comment: Chris Sodom says hi. Antwan Walker is waving in the distance, pretty sure that's Trey Dickerson in the team photo also...

Even if you feel like those kids were misses, don't you think that's kind of unfair since they didn't really have an opportunity to evaluate those players, and were basically scrambling to fill out a roster? How much time do you think they spent scouting Sodom, or getting to know him personally? I think their evaluation skills have been pretty solid, and they generally have been ahead of the curve evaluating talent. But they're definitely going to miss on a couple guys eventually. It's just how this stuff works.

It's just how this stuff works. Also we have no idea if Sodom would have developed into a player as he was dismissed for off the court transgressions after one semester. Dickerson had his moments off success on the court towards the end of his only season in the blue&gray and continues to be an outstanding ambassador for the Hoyas and Coach Ewing's brand via social media. Walker ended his one and only season playing better then the other two remaining all conference freshmen on the team. Many thought he was a candidate for a breakout sophomore season before once again an off the court incident ended his time as Hoya, so we don't have any idea if he wouldn't have also developed into a very relevant contributing member of the team. Since they were dismissed after a short period, I don't consider them whiffs. Maybe Grayson Carter but he wasn't around long enough either and I still believe he has tremendous upside down the road. Unfortunately it won't be utilized by Georgetown...

I think Antwan will do very well at URI. In fact, I won’t be suprised if he’s one of the better players in that conference by his JR/SR seasons.

Chris Sodom says hi. Antwan Walker is waving in the distance, pretty sure that's Trey Dickerson in the team photo also... Three very, very different situations. Walker could well be another Jerrelle Benimon at a place like URI. Dickerson was a fifth year player who wasn't going to be Rodney Pryor but got a chance to play at Georgetown and by the posts on social media was proud to have done so. Sodom was a big miss for Ewing's staff. Not a "right guy, wrong team" like a Duane Spencer or a project that didn't match up to the Big East like a Cornelio Guibunda, Sodom just wasn't the one. In five years, he's seen three high schools and three colleges, with six games to show for his entire college career after skipping out on a last-stop chance at junior college. He is now trying out for the G-League. medium.com/@drewfavakeh/ground-level-at-the-fort-wayne-mad-ants-g-league-tryout-where-everyone-has-something-to-prove-50d3419a6624

Antwan Walker is waving in the distance, pretty sure that's Trey Dickerson in the team photo also... This is wrong. Dickerson was fine for a 5th year transfer. He filled a role and even won us a game (was it Butler at Butler, I forget). He was a better fit than the chucker from Wright State who went to Illinois and didn't do much. You need guys that fit the role and culture and Trey was that. He wasn't an all big east performer nor was that his role. Walker was a talent and was walking into a legit role his sophomore year. Trying to judge who will be a knucklehead on campus and who won't is damn near impossible. From my days on campus the only guy I saw that was not a good fit socially was Victor Page. No maybe he comes to campus and changes his stripes but I think JT JR. knew he was out on a limb on that one. Much more so than Iverson in my opinion. You can point to Ed Sheffey, Kenny Brunner, Kevin Millen, etc. as guys who ran into trouble and that was under a hall of fame coach who wasn't recruiting his first class so I think you gotta pump the brakes on that a bit. Same can be argued for Sodom. Who knew what you were getting but when you are scratching to fill out a roster, you gotta take some chances. JT III's first full class is full of misses Egerson, Spann & Thornton. It is bound to happen when you are starting late in the recruiting cycle. I think you have to judge Ewing based off of the classes from year 2+ and that is where I think this original argument came from.

Chris Sodom - clear miss Grayson Carter (whom I forgot about when I posted yesterday) - clear miss Antwan Walker - miss (at least as far as his Georgetown career is concerned) Trey Dickerson - bad basketball player, good guy, so maybe not a complete "miss", but clearly not the type of player we want wearing the B&G if we want to be successful Overall, I think the staff has done a solid, albeit unspectacular job of recruiting. I put Akinjo and LeBlanc in the clear "hit" category, with Yurtseven likely to join that duo. McClung is probably going to end up a "hit", but has a decent amount of work to do. There is more to successful basketball than scoring and highlight reel dunks. Pickett and Blair are OK, probably neither is a "hit" or a "miss" at this point. Wahab/Ighoefe/Alexander/Gardner/Wilson are all TBD. What the staff hasn't done is get a clear blue-chipper, top 25 type of recruit. And that's disappointing since I think a lot of people expected Ewing's starpower/NBA pedigree to help with those types of players (a la Penny Hardaway, among others).

I too thought Pat would reel in a 5-star big by now. It just shows me how important AAU connections are and how far out of the loop GU had gone. We are headed in the right direction now.

I'm not a big fan of tts takes. The problem is we're not a pick-er school so sometimes we're going to have to reach. That being said even those schools miss on kids. Not everyone that ends up at Duke is a hit. Same goes for Kansas, or UK. I think Carter ends up a descent player, but I'd consider him a reach, more than a miss.. Overall I'm happy with their evaluation skills, and think they've done a good job playing to player's strengths, rather than a one size fits all approach. Example of this is how they used McClung last year. They ran a lot of pistol and other action that allowed him to get downhill (strength). They did not run him off screens to shoot jumpers (weakness). Penny's had a lot of success because of his AAU ties, not because of his star power imo...

I didn't expect Ewing to land Top 50ish recruits right away. I thought it would take some time to demonstrate that Georgetown is improving, regaining its mojo, and a valid landing spot for high level talent.
To that end, I think what Ewing accomplished on the recruiting front by pulling in Omer as a transfer, and James, Josh, and Mac as frosh last year was nothing short of a miracle. Adding Q, Allen, Myron, and Galen this year seems like another strong haul.
I think we will begin to see exciting results in 2019-2020, both on the court (by returning to the dance with a Top 25 competitive team) and in recruiting (by convincing recruits like Davis, T. Williams, M. Williams, or similar ilk to sign on the line which is dotted). Success on the court leads to success in recruiting.

Lol slick, at least @me...A clear miss is if you have a player on your roster for multiple years and he never develops. Seventh Woods was a clear miss for UNC. Tre Campbell was a clear miss for Georgetown. Stephen Domingo is looked at as a clear miss because of the hype he came in with and didn't develop at Georgetown or at Cal. Sodom and Walker were derailed by off the court issues not an inability to play. Sodom was a knucklehead, doesn't mean he didnt have the physical abilities to develop into a contributor down the road if his head was right. Walker may still develop into a solid if not major contributor at URI. Grayson Carter may develop into a player wherever he ends up at. Their complete stories have yet to be written. If we look up a couple years from now and see Carter and Walker both playing and contributing on good college teams, they won't be misses. Did anyone on here think Macklin or Sanford were clear misses when they transferred from Georgetown and helped lead their respective teams (Florida & Dayton) to Elite 8 finishes in the NCAA tournament? Did anyone think Benimon was a clear miss as a 2x CAA POY and spent some time in the NBA? A ridiculous take is that McClung has work to do to be a good recruit. Nobody in the country had him averaging 13 PPG as a freshman. McClung had several monster games last season. Based on what was expected, he's been a huge hit. I feel sorry for you if all you saw was scoring and high light reel dunks in the growth of his game. I never expected the staff to come in and get "Blue Chip" players. I hope the staff never focuses on just "Top 25". That hasn't been a pathway to wins the last 5 years. Villanova, Virginia, Texas Tech have shown the way to winning is mining for diamonds in the ruff. Maybe you need to watch full games instead of the 2 minute Ballislife clips. Get off Rivals and 247 and watch more of the game. Maybe you'll learn some things....

By the way, Trey Dickerson was not a "bad basketball player". He was brought in because we needed a guard with experience, but more importantly because Patrick wanted someone who could help speed up the offense. I continue to believe that Trey's biggest failing was taking that too literally - at times, especially the first half of the season, he tried to play faster than his skills justified, resulting in forced shots and sloppy turnovers. The last few weeks he was a very serviceable back up point guard.

I said that Ewing wouldn't get 5* kids until 21/22 and quite a few posters lost their minds. The only way it was gonna happen earlier was a perfect storm type situation. The cupboard was to bare to attract 5* kids the last two years. This year we will have a product on the court that shows potential. Stewart and Anthony were close and if they were 20 kids instead of 19 it might have happened....

However, Ewing might get there one year earlier than your original projection based on the power of the miracle 2018 recruiting/transfer class. We’ll see how it plays out by the end of this season. I feel very optimistic at this point.

Our brand was so tarnished when Pat took over. Just the perception of our boring style of play and colossal postseason failures. The media was more than happy to fan the flames. We are going to put a damn good team on the floor this season.
