The event on the mall made me, once again, very proud to be an American.

The event on the mall made me, once again, very proud to be an American. There are still concentration camps on the border. The president is openly defying a congressional subpoena and is trying to ignore a court order regarding the constitutionally mandated census. Aren’t you the “I just want the law followed” guy? I don’t know how you can feel anything but shame (actually, I do know).

Or are you just reacting to President Trump?

I did not watch. But, it doesn't matter since there is absolutely nothing trump could say that would make me proud to be an American. This is currently a disgraceful country (remember, concentration camps) and it’s his and his supporters fault that we have fallen so far.

I don't mean this as an attack in any way. I'm sincerely curious. Would you have been as proud had President Obama done something similar, tanks and all? FWIW, I'm all for a local parade. National ones make me uneasy.

Full disclosure, I, as a card-carrying curmudgeon, hate all parades. I agree with the first point, and having marched in parades, I agree with the second point!!! Most service members HATE parades and pass-in-reviews. The unhappiest folks on the Fourth were the service members. Typically, the 4th of July is generally a stand down day. Instead, they had to prepare for the dog-and-pony show and remove all the military equipment post-dog-and-pony show. The $2.5 million is money that Trump could "steal" from Interior because it was from the fees charged by the Park Service and thus non-appropriated funds. If it had been appropriated funds, he would have been required to reprogram the funds by going to Congress. (See e.g., the legal challenges over his use of emergency authority to "steal" DOD funds to build his wall).

If I had observed President Obama giving this identical speech amid the same military fly-overs, with the same cast of characters, it still would have made me extremely proud to be an American. However, in all honesty, the odds of my watching it live would have been reduced. That's as honest an answer as I can give. BTW, I don't believe there were any tanks present. What I saw was a single Bradley Fighting Vehicle but no M1 or other Tanks.

What I saw was a single Bradley Fighting Vehicle but no M1 or other Tanks. I spent two years in Egypt observing and identifying Russian, American and Israeli made tanks and other armored vehicles. There were tanks in DC. Tracked howitzers are often mistaken for tanks. This time, the Army has sent a small contingent of tanks and other vehicles. The service shipped five vehicles: two M1A2 Abrams tanks, two M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, a M88A2 Hercules armored recovery vehicle, and a Humvee. The vehicles were shipped north by rail from Fort Stewart, Georgia, where they are part of the 3rd Infantry Division. After some concern that the weight of the armored vehicles could damage the tunnels that run underneath the Lincoln Memorial photographs now show them being set up on display in front of the Memorial. www.popularmechanics.com/military/weapons/amp28283903/all-of-the-military-hardware-at-washingtons-4th-of-july-event/

I made my observation after watching the event; and, my observation was based on that event alone. Did you watch it? Or are you just reacting to President Trump? What did the event mean to you? What are you proud of? Pride is a rather selfish good feeling obtained through the good words or works of others. So when I say I was proud, that's what it is. The speech that President Trump read was a short course in United States history. It traced our roots from the founding fathers through our 240 years to the present time, showing what an extraordinary undertaking this has been. The founding fathers did not get it completely right the first time but, via the constitution, it provided a way to right what was wrong. It accented the military but did not confine it to the military. He cited many past and present figures who made contributions to mankind, like John Glenn, Jackie Robinson, Samuel Morse, and Frederick Douglass and many more. He lauded the military, tracing the roots of each branch, and made note of numerous battles from Tripoli to war against terrorists; and, the nations freed as a consequence of blood shed by normal Americans. The Army band playing the theme songs of each of the services, choreographed to coincide with the various fly-overs, were the icings on the cake. This was on a grand scale but only mimic-ed what has taken place over the years in large and small communities on Independence Day. What community does not have a 4th of July parade with old vets walking, local bands playing, flags flying, and jeeps or trucks from the local national guard driving by? I am still proud to be an American and not ashamed to say so.

The beauty of what was founded in Philadelphia 243 years ago is that it is bigger than any one man or any one set of circumstances. We should all be proud that this grand experiment, a break from colonial tyranny endures and thrives all these years later.
There is a reason people stream to our borders, legally and illegally. We have profound and numerous intramural differences but there a no doubt that this is the greatest nation on Earth.
I may pop off and virulently disagree with people on this board about the best way to continue this grand experiment. However, while I will oppose their methods, I never doubt their love for our country.
Happy belated Fourth.

The tanks--which were paid for and transported to DC using taxpayer funds--- were put near the VIP section that was filled with mostly donors who got tickets from the Republican National Committee....
