Was definitely not expecting this move: John Beilein has agreed to a five-year contract to become the next coach of the Cavaliers, ESPN.com reports. Beilein has become one of the most successful coaches in college basketball with program-changing stops at Canisius, Richmond, West Virginia and Michigan.nypost.com/2019/05/13/john-beilein-hired-by-cavaliers-in-stunning-nba-move/2019 UM RecruitsCole Bajema 6'7 F Jalen WIlson 6'8 F

Hopefully, he'll be ready for the NBA grind. I wonder if Burke/Stauskas/Hardaway Jr would want to join him

Look for Miami Heat assistant coach Juwan Howard's name to be mentioned as a possible replacement. Howard who's was a major part of the MICHIGAN FAB 5 in the 90's recently interviewed for the Lakers head coaching job and has great connections and contacts throughout basketball...

I'm thinking it's more likely that LaVell Jordan leaves Butler to return to Michigan, or that Nate Oats bails on his new position at Alabama to likewise return to Michigan. Don't see UM taking a flyer on an alumni without any head coaching experience, based upon the present level of the program.

Perhaps this is the "canary in the cave" for NCAA coaches who run clean programs. I can't remember any alleged improprieties under John Beilein's watch at any of the schools at which he has coached. In the aftermath of the various federal indictments that exposed the ugly underside of college basketball recruiting, the move by Beilein to the Cavaliers is not so surprising. He doesn't have to swim in the shark-infested waters any longer, and the five-year contract will be a nice retirement package for him. I believe that as other college coaches look at college coaching life today, there will be some who prefer to move to the pro ranks...whether in the NBA or overseas.

Or hes getting out before sanctions come a la Calipari escape pod. NBA can be used by both sides.

Less about a canary in the cave and more about a 66 year old who's coached high school, JC, D-III, D-II, and four different D-I teams, who's getting a big payday for his last coaching job at the only level he has never coached. And if the ping pong balls fall the right way Tuesday, the Cavs could be in a great situation for 19-20 and beyond.

"Bring the program back"? Ok, I can understand Jalen wanting the school to hire his teammate and buddy. And I'm not saying that it wouldn't be a good hire. But that comment has to be about the most insipid statement I've read in some time. Yeah, the program really deteriorated under Beilein. Please.

Very surprised that Michigan is apparently hiring Howard. No prior head coaching experience at any level. Are they expecting that he'll be able to recruit like Penny Hardaway? The academic requirements at U-M are significantly stricter than at Memphis, and Howard doesn't have a built-in pipeline to talent like Hardaway had in Memphis prior to his hiring. I could be wrong, but I think that other Big Ten coaches are going to be very happy that Michigan made this hire, and that the Wolverine program is going to be taking some very big steps backwards.
