I finally found the guts to re watch the 1996 UConn vs Georgetown big east tournament game last night. When I watched it live I was a junior in high school and being a CT resident I remember being devastated that we lost to a wacky Ray Allen shot put heave from the foul line. As you can imagine I took a lot of BS from all the UConn fans at my school!
Watching it back now with the perspective of time we clearly had the better team, we controlled the whole second half except when we went into a 1-4 stall set and put the game in AIs hands except running the team offense we ran the whole game. I guess you can’t blame JT for putting the game in the hands of a generational talent. What I did forget was the last second lay up that Jerome Williams missed that would have won the game.
That second half we really played ahead of our time. Lots of drive and kick, a good amount of threes, pressure defense. It’s amazing what you can do when u have what 4 NBA players in the team plus victor Paige that was playing like a should be future NBA Star.
I miss that team and those guys. The mutombo and Zo teams started my love for this program then we quickly went into the AI teams. It was a shame we had to wait so long for the next run with Sapp, hibbert, summers, etc. I was so disappointed in the freeman, Wright, sims, lubick etc teams. Finally I feel like our next group is here. With coach Ewing leading the way. This current edition can be special. Future looks bright. Ok I got all that off my chest. Thank u

Too much Iverson and not enough Page at the end of that game.

Great post, Richfame! A heartbreaker for sure.
As we have discussed in other threads, I put that UConn loss in 1996 in my Top 5 crushing Hoya defeats, behind only Nova 1985/UNC 1982 (tie), Iowa 1980, and Davidson 2008.
Onward and upward from here, with Coach Pat.

Also as a young man in my early 20s, I felt the winner of that game gets the #1 out west. I don't know how we handle the travel but I do believe UMASS was the only team that could've slowed down our O....Camby in the middle was tough and eliminated our advantage with Big O. Kentucky, Syracuse and MissSt were much better matchups....not saying that we would win but avoiding UMASS sets us up for a Final 4 run....imo

One of many games that I have tried to forget over the past forty-plus years.
"I keep trying to get out and they keep dragging me back in."

I don't know what game you guys are talking about but it sounds terrible. Who's this Ray Allen guy anyway?

This. I was at the game, a senior, sitting in the student section about 30 feet away from the hoop, i had as good a view as the ref did and he was fouled. I cant watch that game yet, it is too soon. Maybe when it doesn't sting as much I can bring myself to watch it.

Too much Iverson and not enough Page at the end of that game. Paige was playing so well in the game and tournament.

Too much Iverson and not enough Page at the end of that game. My recollection is that Travis Knight fouled out w 5 minutes left and Othella didn't touch the ball the rest of the game after we went to 1-4 iso. Needed to go inside. If I remember correctly he had a big first half and was on all tourney team.

If you REALLY want to be heartbroken, slow down Ray Allen's shot and freeze it at the moment his foot touches the ground and the ball is still in his hand.

I was there in MSG. JYD WAS fouled. Thompson should not have gone into the stall offense. That loss cost us a one seed and caused us to play UMass in the regional finals. I don't thr guys ever got over the loss to UConn and could not deal with Marcus Camby and UMass.
