The NCAA’s field of 68 teams has been set, with four Big East Conference teams in the Big Dance. Villanova, recipient of the automatic bid from the Big East by virtue of the Wildcats’ 74-72 win over Seton Hall, is the #6 seed in the South Regional, and will face Saint Mary’s in the first round in Hartford. Marquette earned a #5 seed in the West Regional, and will face Murray State in the first round, also in Hartford. Seton Hall was slotted as a #10 seed, and will face Wofford in the first round, to be played in Jacksonville. All three games will be played Thursday. St. John’s squeaked into the tournament as a #11 seed, and will play in the First Four game at Dayton on Wednesday against Arizona State; the Johnnies can advance to a first round matchup with Buffalo in Salt Lake City on Friday with a win.
Duke is the new #1 in the final pre-tournament rankings of the Associated Press Top 25, after winning the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament with victories over Syracuse (84-72), #3 North Carolina (74-73) and then-ranked #12 Florida State (73-63). The ACC has the top three slots in the rankings, with Virginia and North Carolina maintaining their respective #2 and #3 rankings; those three teams, along with Gonzaga (now #4 after dropping three slots with a 60-47 loss in the West Coast Conference championship game to Saint Mary’s) are the four #1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament.
Villanova is the only Big East team ranked in the AP Top 25, moving up two slots to #23; Marquette, formerly ranked #23, fell out of the polls after losing to Seton Hall, 81-79, in the semifinal round of the Big East Conference tournament. Maryland also dropped out of the AP Top 25 after losing in the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Conference tournament, 69-61, to unranked Nebraska. New to the polls are Iowa State (now #24) and Utah State (now #25); the Cyclones returned to the rankings after winning the Big 12 Conference tournament with victories over Baylor (83-66), then-ranked #15 Kansas State (63-59) and #17 Kansas (78-66), and the Aggies entered the rankings for the first time after winning the Mountain West tournament with victories over New Mexico (91-83), California State Fresno (85-60) and San Diego State (64-57).
Auburn had the biggest jump in the AP Top 25, moving up eight slots to #14 after winning the Southeastern Conference tournament with victories over Missouri (81-71), South Carolina (73-64), Florida (65-62) and then-ranked #8 Tennessee (84-63). Nevada had the biggest drop in the AP Top 25, falling six slots to #20 after losing to San Diego State in the semifinal round of the Mountain West tournament, 65-56.
