As we approach year-end, the Los Angeles Times starts to publish on a weekly basis a special section called The Envelope dealing with the Academy Awards. I happened to be leafing through last week's envelope, and found a half page devoted to a documentary directed by former Hoya RaMell Ross. The documentary is called Hale County This Morning, This Evening, and is a look at a rural Alabama community where Ross coached hoops. The article refers to the film as a visually arresting debut, and describes Ross as an established photographer and a professor at Brown. Two thumbs up for RaMell.

GEMA! GEMA! Big congratulations to RaMell. Also, recently heard that Boumtje-Boumtje is putting his MS in Applied Math hoops experience to good use as a technical scout with the Sixers. www.nba.com/sixers/front-office-directory

That's pretty impressive at any age, much less RaMell's stage in his career.

How awesome would it be to see RaMell come away with a nomination? RaMell, Mr. Rogers and RBG. Nice company.

Seriously, this is a HUGE achievement by Ramell. I recall meeting his dad at several games back in the day. He was a very impressive guy too. Injuries, timing and coaching held RaMell back from a more successful career on court. Doesn't seem to have held back his real career. BRAVO!!

What is remarkable about the nomination is it is RaMell's first film. Think of that. There are legions of great documentary film makers whose entire career never got within distance of an Academy Award nomination. Whereas many documentaries rise up the ladder with epic stories or war and peace, or chronicling famous people., RaMell went to a place America forgot and told their story with purpose and respect.
RaMell has appeared at a number of universities with this film, but not Georgetown. The collective "we" need to invite him back this year for a screening and Q&A. After all, it all started on the Hilltop.

Most commentators out here seem to feel that RBG is a lock for the Oscar, but who knows? Bradley Cooper and RaMell. Go Hoyas.

Documentary award is decided by an entirely different group of voters than the other awards - they’re much less concerned about “names” or celebrity subjects (in fact in the past they’ve seen it as a negative). That’s all to say that “Hale County” has a real shot here. Would love to see Ramell’s acceptance speech. Would he thank Esh?
