Following the announcement of Curtis Jones' decision to finish out his collegiate career at Penn State for the 2019-20 season, BWI caught up with Rivals National Basketball Analysts Corey Evans and Eric Bossi to learn more about the program's pick-up: Corey Evans: "Curtis Jones is a versatile guard that is most confident with how he shoots the ball. He has always been someone that could get to his spot on the floor as a three-level scorer. "He sports good length and a solid first step and, at the basket, is a good enough athlete in finishing against bigger bodies. He brings versatility to the backcourt where he can play either guard position and be relied upon on at either side of the floor thanks to his physical tangibles." Eric Bossi: ""I was able to watch Curtis Jones quite a bit during his high school days, at Indiana and then again at Oklahoma State. Coming out of high school he was a long and slender scorer who could get out and finish and transition but was best known for his jump shot. "When he got to college, a lack of strength and suspect ball handling hurt him early and he moved on to Oklahoma State. Though he added strength and still showed explosion, Jones struggled to get any kind of consistency with his jumper. "So much of Jones play is tied into whether or not he's shooting the ball well. When he sees it go in a few times, he can get rolling quick and his entire game and energy pick up. However, if he misses a few early he can have a hard time forgetting and it messes with other aspects of his game. "There's no doubting he has the ability to emerge as a quality Big Ten scorer it's just a matter of not being so reliant on the jumper and remembering that there's lots else he can do if his shot isn't falling." bwi.rivals.com/news/sizing-up-the-nittany-lions-newest-addition-curtis-jones

I'm guessing it would've been better to have a guaranteed game against Duke, however this let's us swing for the fences by possibly facing, and beating, both Duke and Texas and avoiding a game against Cal. How good is Texas supposed to be this year?

Expected these matchups. The goal is to get Duke playing in the Championship game and fill MSG. The Event Directors probably don't care who they play between Georgetown or Texas in the championship game. There partners at ESPN probably want Texas. Would have been devastating for both parties if Duke lost the semi final game to Georgetown or Texas and played the 6:30 game 3rd place game the next night...

Central Arkansas 2019 - NET 298, KENPOM 302, RPI 283 Cal Baptist 2019 - NET 168, KENPOM 197, RPI 209 Prairie View 2019 - NET 206, KENPOM 209, RPI 150 Georgia St 2019 - NET 126, KENPOM 124, RPI 50 Geographically, Georgia St would make the most sense as the other matchup. Have to assume Cal Baptist will play Cal as one opponent, and Prairie View will play Texas as one opponent. Best outcome here, I'd say.

I would think Texas would be favored having just won the NIT in the Garden... a possible slight psychological edge...but sometimes early on like this, its better to go in as a slight underdog...should be a good test...

While we haven’t seen the rest of it, I’m pretty happy with how the OOC schedule has turned out.
5 games against Power 5 conference openers (compared to 3 total in Ewing’s first two seasons), plus @smu and home against a decent mid-major in Georgia State.
9 home games, 2 true road games and 2 neutral site games.
Only one opponent in the RPI/NET 200+ range.
With 5 games left to be announced, if 2 of the 5 remaining can be RPI 100-200 level (or slightly better, like Liberty last year), that would be a great schedule for this team.

It becomes easier for a first-time coach to increase the difficulty of his team's schedule as he becomes more confident in his team's talent and capabilities. Very excited for the upcoming season.

Comments about Duke's road games:
3. Georgetown or Texas Nov. 22 at Madison Square Garden in New York (Empire Classic)
2018-19 record: Georgetown 19-14 ; Texas 21-16
Coach: Patrick Ewing (Georgetown); Shaka Smart (Texas)
Outlook: First, a prediction: this will be Georgetown, who likely will beat Texas in the first-round of the Empire Classic. The Hoyas bring back James Akinjo, Mac McClung and Josh LeBlanc and have an exciting young core primed to take a leap. Texas, on the other hand, is a mystery. Jaxson Hayes, Kerwin Roach and Dylan Osetkowski's departures leave a big load for Courtney Ramey, Jase Febres and Matt Coleman to fill in the stat sheet.

Is this series 1 game per year or do we get a home game against another conference member this season?

He's going to be tough but no worse then what we will see in conference. Throw the Pickett, Gardner, Alexander, Leblanc platoon at him.

I Would be surprised if Coach Ewing didn't schedule a game in northern California in one of the next two seasons just to give Akinjo a chance to play a game near home...
