I am curious. why does anyone think Malcolm will trained to become a four rather than a 5? He is the taller of our big freshmen and shot-blocking seemed to be his strength! I would love to see his footwork and ballhandling develop along with added weight and strength. He can run very well and jump high. Great quickness! But, his footwork getting to his jump-shot needs development. My opinion is based upon only a little observation. Does anyone have other thoughts or observations? Becomes he runs like a gazelle and has great lateral movement. Kind of like Pistons Dennis Rodman. He has the ability to guard small forwards and power forwards with his lateral quickness, length and speed.

I understand under the circumstances of last week. I was curious because of board statements suggesting that he would become a four. I was thinking five because of his shot-blocking ability. He moves well but I question his ball handling and shooting mechanics--that is getting to his shooting pocket. He has a fine stroke above his waist. Just seems a bit awkward. He is a warrior down under the basket!!

Barring extenuating circumstances, I doubt Wilson will play against Syracuse. Basically, the last chance for him to get minutes would be UMBC, Samford, and American (the latter two definitely not being pushovers). If he doesn't play a minute before the Big East season, I would have to think he's red shirting.

Am I the only person whose stomach dropped when there was a new post in this thread? I know mine did and I imagine many/most readers did too. Just too darn much drama around the team lately. As for playing the 4 or 5, if Pat can get him ready to coontribute productive minutes alongside Yurt and/or Wahab, great. It would be a surprise, especailly this year, unless we have more departures or lengthy suspensions.

BTW, can't one apply for a redshirt later? Assuming no playing time? I don't think that is something that can only be applied for in advance.

He runs well and seems to be an explosive athlete. His offense is limited, and was limited even in high school, but he could gets some points off PnR lobs, offensive rebounds and in transition. That was pretty much Leblanc's offensive game last year. If Wilson can come back next year and add a defensive presence and more rim protection he should have a role on the team

True. If Malcolm and/or Tim don’t play any minutes this season, they would both be eligible for a redshirt year at year’s end, but there’s no need to claim it ahead of time.

He is stick thin. If he can gain 15 lbs between this year and next....and 30 lbs by the time her graduates, will be a game changer for him and his game.

At this point with neither having played (and remembering that playing a single minute means no redshirt)I would definitely think the plan is to redshirt them, but if there are significantly injuries or other unavailabilities you keep them ready.

But losing LeBlanc and Akinjo to transfer is equivalent to losing them for the season to injury. I think Malcolm can get time at LeBlanc's power forward spot now and might be good to start developing him especially since there's still the possibility of losing Garnder and Alexander for the season.

For the love of God... everybody stop talking about Malcolm at the 4. Why? He's a natural 4 in my opinion.

What are the qualities of a 4 or aka Power Forward. I think of Karl Malone, Kevin Garnett, etc.

What are the qualities of a 4 or aka Power Forward. I think of Karl Malone, Kevin Garnett, etc. That is a fair question given we're making definitive statements of whether someone is a 4 or a 5. I do think Ewing is subscribing to the more general three categorizations of guard / wing / center. The power forward of Karl Malone / Kevin Garnett seems outdated at this point. I'm racking my brain thinking of current NBA players that fit that mold and maybe came up with Blake Griffin? Who's now shooting 5+ 3s per game. Giannis is a freak / no idea what to call him. Even Kevin Love as a power forward has a perimeter skill set. I think we're moving more to both the 3 and 4 being wings, ie skilled, strong, athletic, versatile players who can do a little bit of everything, including handle the ball and dribble drive. Otto Porter and Jeff Green are modern examples. Another way to think about it is we've played 9 games (and plenty against power 5 top D1 competition) w Jamorko Pickett primarily as the 4. Has he been posted up once? The game is transitioning where you need space on the court to run efficient offense. And on defense, the more switchable / athletic defenders you have on the court, the better. Think about all the rotating our defense is doing when your player is not involved in the pick n roll. I think people are reaching for one of Ewing's center recruits being a 4 to justify the balance of the class. And that's ultimately fine. Any big man going through the Ewing School of Basketball is a good bet to be an impact player. I just don't see him being paired with another post player.
