We now have 22 shootings in the nation's schools this year. Shootings in locations that we, as parents, believe our children will be safe.
This is beyond intolerable.

All those thoughts and prayers and this still happens. Who could have imagined such a thing?

This is a Congress that can't even get a farm bill approved, so the idea of tackling school violence (and it's more than just guns, as this incident shows) is just short of impossible in this political stalemate. As long as the orthodoxy regards compromise as capitulation, nothing will get done.

I couldn't care less what the father has to say and I wish it wasn't part of the news. What he has to say should be between him, law enforcement and mental health professionals. I don't want to read about him or his kid except for the sentencing.

I agree, but the Republican Senator from the home state of this mass killing is tweeting out sympathetic articles of the shooter for some odd reason and amplifying it. A father defending his son, however misguided, is reasonable. But a Senator sharing this quote, that essentially blames the victims of a crime for said crime, is confusing for a number of reasons... Is he tweeting this in support of him? Is this his way of saying guns aren't the problem, bullying is? I don't know what I would be thinking if I was a parent of one of this kids victims and saw my Senator post that article.

It's one of two things - he's either an idiot and didn't realize what he was endorsing by retweeting that. Or, he's subtly trying to shift the blame away from guns. While I have no doubt that this guy thinks anything in the world other than guns should be blamed, it's quite possible he's just a dumbass like the rest of the Republican leadership.

I read it as Cornyn going after the Dad : I do not think you can be too cynical about Republican Senators though, so who knows if Cornyn will actually try to do anything about going after parents that leave their firearms unsecured.

Maybe... I would certainly feel better about it if it was, but he provided no context until after that tweet made the rounds for a few hours.... About an hr ago he tweeted this.. Not exactly clear what he's getting at imo but I don't really believe Cornyn (A+ NRA rating) wants to buck the NRA on any issue... www.nrapvf.org/campaigns/2014/vote-cornyn/

Wow. Even when you give these Republicans the benefit of the doubt and assume there was a reasonable motive there, nope.

"That is what news does" is a fine explanation if you're a reporter. But he's not a reporter. He's a Senator. Politicians don't just report news without motive. (Not that I think reporters lack motives, but at least reporting is their job.)

2 year anniversary of this tweet... Times have changed. Things are much worse now, so there are yuge reasons to now want guns on campus. Guns on campus! Guns on campus! Guns on campus (with apologies to my generation, which had it slightly different)
