Didn't have time to watch this whole thing, but did see the Green Eggs and Ham riff, and that was absolutely worth it.

The administration knew all along this was going to be a disaster, Smh... www.rollcall.com/news/ig-dhs-knew-couldnt-track-migrant-kids-separated-borderUnder the “zero tolerance” policy implemented under then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions, thousands of adults crossing the southern border were separated from their children and referred for criminal prosecution. The migrant children were labeled “unaccompanied” and placed in the care of the Health and Human Services Department.
But DHS did not have the required technology or procedures in place to track the families it separated, the inspector general reports. Agency officials first became aware of these issues in 2017 — but did not fully remedy them. One senior CBP official told IG investigators that “key stakeholders had pressured DHS to implement the policy in May” before data and procedural issues had been fixed.Once the policy went into effect, CBP officials logged separations in an existing database in an ad-hoc manner without the ability to properly document details of “zero tolerance” cases separately from the others. The IG report noted that in one case, an Arizona-based nonprofit had inquired about a deaf minor who had been separated from his father, but the child’s case record did not contain details of his separation or disability.

"The fake university is believed to have collected millions of dollars from the unsuspecting students." So... I really hesitate to talk about this one, both because I recognize I have relevant knowledge (not about this case specifically, but about how the Student Exchange and Visitor Program works generally) that the general public cannot be expected to have, and also because my own policy views are... very different from those of this administration when it comes to immigration. No doubt in part informed by the fact that I am an immigrant myself. Having said that, this to me is a great example of the surface-level and to some extent quite flawed journalism going on today even by 'straight news' i.e., non-ideological outlets, particularly on highly complex topics like the U.S. immigration system. Setting aside for the moment how one feels about whether doing this sting operation is justified or not (and Lord knows I have thoughts and feelings about whether this is a good use of resources)... there are reasons why career DOJ prosecutors took and won these cases and judges presided over them and handed down sentences. You can divine from the article itself that the Government would contest the idea that these are "unsuspecting students." How can you be unsuspecting that something is up if you matriculate at a school and find that it has no classes or teachers or anything? It really does beggar belief. Within a week of classes *not* starting...because they don't exist... any reasonable person should've known that something was up. Which is perhaps why the vast majority of those students, after being given their voluntary departure orders, followed them through and left the country. The reality is that there are all manner of what might be termed "immigration scams" out there, with varying levels of participants. One can legitimately feel many different ways about that, including that scamming our current immigration system is a victimless 'crime' and the existing laws are illegitimate, inhumane, whatever. One can also feel that setting up this type of operation to catch people party to such scams is a waste of resources, entrapment, or whatever else. But at the very least, it's important to understand the factual context, which is that there are (insert not insignificant number here) of people setting up fake schools for visa purposes as a fraudulent enterprise, and there is a demand for fraudulent visa status as a means of entering and residing in the U.S. Absent an understanding of that, one will not really be able to comprehend what was going on here, or why any future Democratic administration will have to find its own way of dealing with this reality. What I would want from journalists is to offer that context. I know it's complicated, and they're hurting for money and under pressure to churn out content. But they fell short of the mark here.

I want to respond but I can't be pithy or humorous or accepting or understanding. This is just awful and should never, ever happen. I'm so ashamed.

You voted for this and will again. And, if he wins, he’s going to ramp the horrors up to a spot we can’t imagine.

Forgive me if I don't have much faith in prayer being able to fix this administration's prostration in deference to foreign authoritarians. Leaders of allied countries are, very literally, laughing at our President. And those are the leaders that are supposed to be "with" us. Turkey, Iran and North Korea actively taunt and berate Trump and he's just stupid enough to take the bait and put us in an irrevocable and dangerous predicament. God forbid one of those folks call him fat. It sounds ridiculous but we all know by now that something that trivial is enough to set off this guy.

No criminal record.
“I joined to serve the country and keep my family safe,” Cruz said in Cabrera’s office. “Now, I’m facing dangers here on my home front.”
Cruz and his two sisters are grappling with how to prepare logistically for Rebollar Gomez’s deportation. She is afraid to return to Acapulco, her hometown in Mexico, because of the cartel violence that has overtaken the city.
In 2018, Acapulco had the third highest number of homicides in Mexico and the highest homicide rate of the country’s 10 most violent cities, higher even than Tijuana, according to a University of San Diego report.
That violence has already touched Rebollar Gomez’s family. Her brother was abducted by a cartel, and though the family paid thousands of dollars in extortion money for his return, his body has never been found.
The family is worried that Rebollar Gomez’s ties to the U.S., and particularly to the military, will make her a target.
Merry Xmas...

So Trump can pardon Eddie Gallagher but he can't do anything about this?

So Trump can pardon Eddie Gallagher but he can't do anything about this? "The problem is that in 2013, Schreiber, just before he deployed to Afghanistan as a chief intelligence officer, didn't get the right information about filing adoption papers. He says an attorney told him he needed to adopt Hyebin before her 18th birthday for her to have U.S. citizenship. But the age was in fact 16." Malpractice claim against the first attorney? But I suspect that maybe the incorrect information may have come from an Army JAG in which case he likely has no recourse.
