It’s instructive to compare Trump’s harsh language about immigrant “animals” with his response to a direct question about a different group of people behaving badly. After white nationalists staged marches in Charlottesville, culminating in a death, Trump was at pains to distinguish the Nazis from the “people in that group that were there to innocently protest.” He’s less careful when immigrants are involved. Immigrants actually have a lower crime rate than native-born Americans , yet Trump sure seems to spend an awful lot of time talking about the small fraction who are criminals. And he doesn’t make much effort to distinguish them from the overwhelming majority of immigrants who are just here to make a law-abiding life for themselves and their families. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/trumps-words-carry-loathsome-baggage/2018/05/23/6a132084-5df5-11e8-a4a4-c070ef53f315_story.html?utm_term=.99126dbb0f2b

Throwback Thursday:
Seems odd that even though the economy is doing well, and Republicans just passed a huge tax cut, Trump feels the key to victory is stoking racial divisions... Economic anxiety ftw....

In a 6-month span, 700 children separated from parents at border. "Every Caucasian-American child is a precious gift from God." FTFY.

Nielsen told the hearing that going to a port of entry was the way to go for folks wanting to come in.. www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/huppke/ct-met-family-separation-aclu-trump-asylum-huppke-20180316-story.htmlThe asylum-seeking Congolese mother and child I’ve been writing about for the past two weeks have finally been reunited here in Chicago, where the 7-year-old girl has been held apart from her mother since November.
The reunion happened late Friday and, according to an American Civil Liberties Union attorney representing the family, mother and child fell into each other’s arms crying in a moment of tremendous emotion.
To recap, Ms. L. fled the Democratic Republic of the Congo with her then-6-year-old daughter, S.S., fearing imminent death. They arrived at a port of entry in California in November, found a border agent and said they were seeking asylum. The mother passed a credible fear test, meaning immigration officials believe she has a strong asylum case and would face death or persecution if returned to her home country.
Ms. L. followed all the laws this country has established for asylum seekers. But for reasons that remain unexplained, she was separated from her daughter and incarcerated at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in San Diego. The daughter was moved to a Department of Health and Human Services facility for unaccompanied minors here in Chicago. She celebrated her 7th birthday in December here, without her mother and in the middle of a strange country, and the two have only spoken by phone a handful of times.

That has 0 to do with the policy you were cheering on in your first post. People have been coming to this country for centuries that's not going to change. What's changed is how we treat them when they get here. You should be glad you live in a country that is a desired home for so many instead of being so callous. Even if you're an immigration hardliner there's plenty of solutions that do not involve separating mothers from a young child.

The flood of illegal immigration is a relatively new development. The families being separated are being separated because the parents have chosen to commit a crime. It is sad and it is tragic. That said a country without a border is no longer a country. What I cheered in my first post was Kamala Harris being called out on her grandstanding disingenuousness. That holds.

The only thing you did to be a citizen here is get shot out of the right Edited. Maybe take a second and think about how fortunate you are because of that fact. The story linked above describes a woman who fled violence in her country and turned herself in at the border seeking asylum... Many great Americans have followed a similar path. That's why the clarification on Trump's animals comment is such bs. MS13, or asylum seeker Republican policy is to treat all of them the same, like animals...

That said a country without a border is no longer a country. What I cheered in my first post was Kamala Harris being called out on her grandstanding disingenuousness. That holds. And people have come here "illegally" (i.e. without "permit" for centuries), be it through unauthorized "crossings" or overstay of authorized visas or, better yet, from royal British proclamations over the last four centuries. How legal were the disembarcations of Africans from slave ships, pray tell?!? As far as grandstanding disingenuousness is concerned, I can only point to the President's morning tweet blaming the Dems for separating 1500 children, who, in the eyes of this thug Administration and its racist minions, happened to have been born under the wrong race/ethnicity, at the border from their parents as one of the most outstandingly duplicitous claims, if not innumerable lies it has perpetuated/manufactured/hoisted on its sucker supporters in the last 24 hours. I detected none of said grandstanding disingenuousness in any of Kamala's statements since the 2016 election. THIS country, exceptionalist as it is, as any decent constitutionalist would tell you, is not constituted by border demarcations but by allegiance and adherence to fundamental American values (Constitutionalist--like Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Religion, Freedom of the Press and many other liberties to which all immigrants, regardless of legal status, willingly and enthusiastically assent), which have been under continual assault from this ignorant/neo-McCarthyite/con-artist Administration from Day One (if you don't believe me, ask George F. Will, fellow Socialist in Arms). I shudder to think how many veterans who have fallen in honor during past conflicts and whose sacrifices we're supposed to be honoring this weekend are wondering from up above why their sacrifice of their "lives, fortune and sacred Honor" have been so wasted upon an Executive Branch so ignorant of its exalted constitutional inheritance, so contemptuous of our true values, and so craven/venal to sell itself to the highest bidder in Moscow/Jeddah/name-your-MIddle Eastern-capital-here that it blithely assumes it will continue to get away with selling our American souls to the highest bidder. Fortunately, enough of us continue to remember our true nature and our core values to resist. You have heard from us since the Women's March, the March on Science, the Virginia House of Delegates elections in 2017, the primaries across the country in 2018 and you will definitely hear from us in November 2018.

The punishment does not fit the crime. A greater crime is separating traumatized children from their parents. It is likely that there are responses to crossing the border that do not involve splitting up families. This is a choice the Trump administration has taken and it is not the next logical step. Choosing to cross a border does not give the authorities carte blanche to treat them as inhumanly as they please.

You may be right about the punishment not fitting the crime. American citizens who commit crime(some non-violent) are separated from their children every day. Senator Klieg lights refused to see that distinction. Hence my post.
