If you're not getting five years from a player, then what's the value of a non-medical RS? Why would it have been better for Hunter to be a RS Sophomore when he leaves rather than a true Junior?

Hunter from UVA is a redshirt player and he was a top 100 player Exactly right and he'll probably leave after next season but it was still a good move for UVA to RS him.. Diatke & Huff are RS kids too for UVA.. Salt also.. It's a win/win for both parties in my view.. Redshirting is a tool and it should be used in certain circumstances, but it starts with actually having enough talent. It's a bit easier to have DiVincenzo take the year to get fully healthy when you have Arcidiacono, Brunson, Hart and Booth on the roster. We haven't had that luxury. hm

To me using the redshirt rule isn't about the talent level on a team, it's about the programs needs for a given season and or the development of a given player.. We all know the coach isn't going to play 13 kids so the staff should evaluate players & team needs in both the short & long terms.. As I mentioned in a previous post that's what Marquette did with the Anim kid and it looks like it's gonna pay off well for them..

While redshirting can be very beneficial for both team and player, not every 18 or 19 year old kid will agree to sit on the sidelines for a year. You probably have to have an agreement and understanding during their recruitment that they will take a year to develop. Most kids are blind to their limitations and think they absolutely can play right away. So if you tell them you are going to redshirting them, they may go where they will at least get a chance to play as a freshman - but if you don't tell them until they are on campus, they may feel misled, deceived, undervalued, or all three and may transfer. It is not cut and dried.
But in the end, it can give you four years of production from a player instead of three, which of course is a good thing!

It would suck to redshirt and get recruited over.

It would suck more to play like 30 minutes the whole year

With all due respect, this discussion re redshirting is interesting but will not have any impact on Osun.If he signs,he will play considerable minutes and IMHO effective minutes. He is a steal.

I agree...he's got to decide where he can get the greatest amount of development, because that's what's going to ultimately decide whether and to what degree he has an NBA future (whether that takes 1, 2 or 3 yrs to max out)...and where he can get the best education to provide for life after basketball...he has a great opportunity for both at Georgetown with a HOF big man coach...hope he sees/understands that...

A couple of posts on the Syracuse site say Georgetown is out, it is down to them and the Bonnies. Any basis for that or just arrogance/wishful thinking?

Who knows, but objectively ( oh well ) it makes no sense: Osun look what Patrick did for Marcus and Jesse in one season! Imagine what he could do with you in 3/4 years?

Weren't those posts on Syracuse site on or before his visit to GU?...they were first reported in this thread on 5/16...unless these are new since then...those on 5/16 I believe were before his visit to Georgetown (which I think began on 5/16)...why would he be visiting if Georgetown were "out"?

One post yesterday said "Georgetown is out", another "it is down to Syracuse vs. St. Bonaventure". Again, not ruling out their arrogance/ignorance.

Same stuff that was posted last week...could be true, or just could be people repeating what was posted last week...wouldn't make much sense to me...if true, why would it be reported that he would be deciding Monday between Georgetown, Syracuse and St. Bonaventure...Yes, I'm biased, but Georgetown would make the most sense to me based on above reasons...unless we withdrew for some reason...I still hope he's a Hoya...

Agree 100%. I am not going to agonze if we don't get Osun, but I think he could become a factor for us.

He won't get to play much if any if he chooses Syracuse. They have both of their bigs returning, plus boehiem doesn't usually play more than a 7 man rotation.
Not sure why he would choose St Bonaventure at this point

There was a rumor that the assistant who recruited him to LaSalle was being hired at St. Bonaventure, although then there were indications that was not true. As for Syracuse, both Chakwu and Siddebe have had injury issues.

One of their posters said his "source" told him there are two stories regarding his decision - "man vs. self and man vs. the unknown".

The Syracuse prediction is from the guy who runs the CuseNation site. Not sure how much weight that deserves.

I dont have a prediction. I just think it is time for us. Osun would be the icing on the cake and extra octane to the revving Hoya engine. Say yes and then get busy, thiswould be one helluva class then come what may!
