The 1987 loss in the Elite 8 to Providence (Pitino, Billy Donovan, Delray Brooks and that damn Carlton Screen) was another bad one. I was in Louisville for it and already had my tix to New Orleans for the FF in place. Back then, I had the hubris to think we were going to the Final Four every year.
(I have been to several great ones too, but the losses stick).

This Syracuse game ranks up there among the most disappointing losses, but doesn't hold a candle to the 5 listed below...I think these are the 5 most painful bouncing around in my memory bank. Iowa Elite 8 1980 UNC Finals 1982 Villanova Finals 1985 UConn Big East Championship 1996 Davidson NCAA 2nd Round 2008 Taken together as a group, the trio of NCAA losses to VCU, Ohio, and FGCU was just one big flaming poop package. RD - this is an excellent top 5 worst Hoya losses list. One quibble - I would place Davidson #6 and move in Duke Elite 8 1989 loss at #3 behind the Finals losses and ahead of the Iowa loss (I could easily see an argument flip-flopping Iowa/Duke losses too). Nice job....... The FGCU loss was one of the worst nights of my life. Ruined barrister’s ball. Just ask my fiancé. We just started dating. I have no idea how we survived my fit after that debacle.

Duke loss was RIDICULOUS. Looked like Alonzo was hanging w Rayful E. The night before.
The Providence Loss ‘87 hurt bad as well. But after the blood and guts battles that season w them it was hardly unexpected.
The Scott Skiles Michigan state loss hurt EXTREMELY BAD. That was the end of the EMPIRE. A team loaded with experience and personalities...that team with Michael Graham??

I had listed my 5 chronologically, not in order of pain. I suppose if I had, the list would have been
1. Nova 1985 1. UNC 1982 (tie) 3. Iowa 1980 4. UConn 1996 5. Davidson 2008
The Duke 1989, Providence 1987, and Michigan State 1986 losses were all probably Top 10 painful, but none of those game was really close at the end. Close losses tend to increase the pain factor. Also, the 1987 team exceeded expectation so much, that an elite 8 loss was actually a terrific outcome for the season for Reggie and the Miracles.
I think the UMass 1996 and Virginia 1982 losses would round out my Top 10, with Ohio State 2007 in the next tier.
We've had a ton more great wins, Houston 1984, Louisville 1982, Kentucky 1984, UNC 2007, Syracuse 1980 (twice), Maryland 1980 (twice), and all of our Big East tournament titles among the very best. There was something very special about those 1980 wins as we were on the rise to national prominence and earning our reputation as an emerging force.

Close losses tend to increase the pain factor. Also, the 1987 team exceeded expectation so much, that an elite 8 loss was actually a terrific outcome for the season for Reggie and the Miracles. I think the UMass 1996 and Virginia 1981 losses would round out my Top 10, with Ohio State 2007 in the next tier. Same list for me, though I would probably put UNC '82 as a clear #1. The UNC loss probably belongs on the list of all time painful losses among all sports due to the fact that it was a brilliantly played game between two all time talented teams, decided on the worst kind of brain-lock mistake possible. Iowa '80 might even be number 2 over the Nova 85 loss, because that was my freshman year and the first time I suffered a devastating hoya loss; plus I saw that one in person. We were making travel plans to Indy for the final four at halftime - never made that rookie mistake again! By the time Nova 85 came around, I had been somewhat toughened by the UNC and Iowa losses! and while most of the world viewed the Nova game as an all time upset, all Hoya fans knew that it would be a tough game because of our previous close game (and another competitive second game) with Nova that season. So it was not the shocking upset for most georgetown fans that the wider world perceived it as. Davidson in 08 was worse for me than Uconn 96, because the Uconn game was not an NCAA tournament game. The Uconn loss really hurt our seeding for the tournament (and I certainly threw some things around the room when Allen's shot went down), but the shocking finality of the Davidson game was rough. Plus I was at Davidson in person, and sitting among all those Tar Heel fans rooting their new favorite son added an especially sharp edge to the loss.

It'd be nice if Malcolm would commit...to put us on the board.

247sports.com/college/georgia-tech/Article/Wilson-Open-to-All-Schools-117732457Malcolm has begun to feel the newness of the recruiting process wearing off. “I’m letting the process come to me. I’m not the type of player that tries to go to every school that might recruit me.” Malcolm, instead, would prefer to be invited before he visits. “By inviting me, it shows they really want me and they value my skills as a player and student.” There hasn’t been any one school that has stood out to Malcolm thus far. “All of them are good schools and the coaches all stand out to me.” One of those coaches is Georgetown Coach Patrick Ewing. “He invited me to come over so I took some days off from school to visit this week.” Another coach that has stood out to Malcolm is Josh Pastner of Georgia Tech. “I had great talks when he offered me and I will visit them.” Malcolm will probably visit Georgia Tech in the summer after school is out. “I feel that Coach Pastner can elevate my game on the offensive end.” Versatile is a word that Malcolm uses to describe his game. “I like to be that type of defender that can get inside a player’s head and mess his game up.” On offense, Malcolm is working on improving his mid-range shooting. He’s looking for a coach that can elevate that part of his game. Malcolm’s strength is around the rim. “Put backs are easy for me and I also rebound well.” Wilson is planning on making a decision before the start of his senior season. Malcolm had originally planned to make his decision this summer. “I also thought that a smaller school would be the one I would pick. I would prefer to have one on one in my academics and just a smaller number of students, but I am open to any school now.” If he feels comfortable with his choice, Malcolm plans to sign in the early signing period.

“I’m still at the process of looking at everybody,” Wilson said Tuesday at Phenom Hoops Summer Jam at Ridge View. “We've got the July period, which is another opportunity to expose myself out there. I’m not cutting things down right now. I’m looking at anyone that is open and willing to talk to me.” Georgetown coach and NBA Hall of Fame center Patrick Ewing has taken a liking to Wilson. In April, Ewing had an in-home visit with Wilson, who then visited the Georgetown campus a few weeks later. Syracuse also is recruiting him. “Coach Ewing said he sees some of himself in me, which was a nice thing for him to say. I stay in good contact with him,” Wilson said. Wilson hopes to trim down his list at the end of July and tentatively might announce his college choice before the start of the season in November. USC and Clemson were two of the first schools to get in on his recruitment, and he hears from them regularly. At this point is his offer contingent on us missing on others?

Probably so. But that was to be expected since we missed on Cockburn and Bacot. I think we take Wahab first and Wilson 2nd.

At this point is his offer contingent on us missing on others? Top 3 indicates to me it isn’t a conditional offer. Not sure you’d reduce it down that far if those three offers aren’t all solid.

I dunno about that... see andre rafus. I'd believe this kid, though. Seems pretty level-headed. Wilson & Wahab? Plus Stewart & Weatherspoon? I could live with that.

Don't think we get Stewart No - probably not. But that's a recruiting class I could live with. If you don't get Stewart - or some other big talent who will definitely start right away - then you need a couple of other very good 4-star kids and only one "flier" (presumably either Weatherspoon OR Wilson). Say... Quinones/Collum, Wahab, Kai Jones, Wilson
