From what I saw in Kenner and limited HS video, Akinjo is one of the best passing point guards we've had in many years. Agree he did not look as outstanding as we all hoped in Game 1...lots of possible reasons given here..nerves, rust from his injury, etc. But I think he has a passing flair and vision that more scoring, shooting oriented pg's like Wright, Clark, Wallace and even Markel did not.
Now...whether he can score like those guys..finish at the rack, hit the three....not gonna predict that. But I hope so!

My over/under line on Akinjo having his first 10 assist game is at 5. I could be wrong but I'm taking the under on my own betting line.

All this consternation over what equates to a less than stellar first round interview?
Give the man a chance.

Maybe I am scarred by last season, but in Akinjo and McClung I saw two guys that, while somewhat rough around the edges, represent a likely marked improvement from last season. In retrospect, I think it's easy to forget just how bad our guards were last year, especially Mulmore and Dickerson.
I am optimistic about both guys (and hugely optimistic about LeBlanc). Do I think we will make the NCAA tournament this year? Odds are probably against us at the moment, but it's possible if some things go right (SFHoya99 basically listed them).

FWIW, I thought your post was very clearly stated.

Well said. If our biggest worrry as a team is James Akinjo, I like our prospects. I posted in other threads that I was unimpressed by Akinjo's first game and was roundly criticized. I plead guilty to "irrational exuberance" prior to the game. But to your point, yes our biggest worry has to be Akinjo just because there in no other quality pg on this team and we saw last year what poor pg play can do to us. So yes our biggest worry has to be Akinjo. Sorry if that places a lot on the back of a freshman but it is what it is. I really don't understand how anyone who saw us play last year doesn't feel the same way.

Imo this team isn't good enough individually to make the tourney. If they do, it will because they came together as a team unit and over-performed. It's totally possible and you see it happen for multiple teams a year. It won't be because one of our Freshman puts up huge numbers. That's too much to ask for these guys. That doesn't mean these kids (Mac, Josh, AK) aren't studs.

James knows that the success of this team mostly falls on his shoulders. He was definitely pushing it out there and was a bit sloppy. Still he showed everything that we were expecting from him: ball handling, outside shooting, and finding teammates. His defense needs some work but that will improve throughout the season as he learns to trust his teammates.
I have a feeling that tomorrow night will be a whole new story for him.

You know...there is also such a thing as a bad night...when you score 8, get 7 dimes and have 3-4 turnover.

That doesn't mean these kids (Mac, Josh, AK) aren't studs. I don't need them to put up big numbers; my point was actually that we need incremental improvement at each position. Govan needs to bring more D; Pickett needs to bring more shot creation; and Mac and Akinjo need to be positives rather than negatives. Josh was in there because as we've seen in game 1, he has the ability to greatly improve our defense and rebounding, which we need. This isn't addressed to you, but the slew of posts that are basically "OMG YOU GUYS ARE SO MEAN! THE SKY ISN'T FALLING! WHY ARE YOU EditedS!" is pretty damn tiring. This is a message board. It would be boring and uninteresting if there were not critical analysis of the players. Telling me that I'm saying the sky is falling when I said that James pounded the ball too much and didn't seem as intuitive as a PG as I expected is dumb. Explaining an interesting counter pov is what people should be doing.

James looked a bit more settled to me. He looks to be a smart player. When he gets a little more muscle on him and can fight over picks as opposed to under them, I think he's going to be a really good defender. If he can become a reliable outside shooter, he's going to be dangerous. He doesn't strike me at all as out of his depth and I think he's going to flourish in-season which isn't common for freshmen.
To me, he just has the look of a guy that will want to beat you badly at absolutely anything and I love that.
