I know it would have been hard for Marcus to tie his decision to an incoming freshman but if I were him I would've waited to see what Akinjo decided. I also dont know how much time he has but with a true PG both Jesse's and Marcus's stock will soar. I wish Marcus luck....I for one think without a PG his stock isn't going to get any higher....

Good point - we have continued to recruit big men for the coming season pretty aggressively. Ewing likely knew that this was a strong possibility. And the Post reporter is right - I'll be surprised at this point if Govan returns. This is likely why we are attractive to Yurtseven, in part. If Govan and Derrickson are gone, he'll get all the playing time he can handle (if the NCAA changes the rule as expected, allowing him to play right away). That plus Yurtseven having american family/friends in the DC area - we make perfect sense for him under that scenario. I would be very surprised if Patrick did not know this was coming, or at least a distinct possibility. Many posts have questioned why we would even bother touching base with Yurt and other big man transfers, grad or otherwise, now we know... This is why I roll my eyes when reading some of the the long-term recruiting threads, where posters are looking 2-3 years out and saying things like "We'll have a bunch of bigs on the roster, so we definitely need guards for that class". We have NO IDEA. Literally, not a single person on this board (even those who are - or who claim to be - well-connected) had speculated that Marcus might not return. But plenty of people were wondering why we would go after Yurtseven or Golden instead of GUARDS GUARDS GUARDS. Well, now we know. Roster turnover is non-stop. Get the best talent you can and figure out how to make the pieces fit together.

Also, best to Marcus. Enjoyed watching him play for the past three years.

I thought it was said that his family was very well off. Maybe I'm remembering that wrong. I don't get this decision from a basketball standpoint. UGH I was much more worried about Govan leaving. I figured Derrickson had a good head on his shoulders and realized with his limited athleticism that it wouldn't make sense to leave early. Really takes the wind out of sails for next year. Hope it doesn't negatively impact recruitment of akinjo. I believe his parents live in Bowie, MD which is solidly middle class. But then, none of us are privy to the actual financial circumstances of his family so speculating on this is unproductive, IMHO. Yeah didn't mean to say very well off, just well off. But pointless speculation on my part. My bad.

Man, this one really hurts as a Hoya fan and particularly as a fan of Derrickson's as a Hoya.
I wish him nothing but the best, and I hope something in the water shifts and he is back next year, if not go get 'em Doc where ever you land next.

It is clear now, with hindsight vision, why Patrick continues to recruit at the forward position for next season. He knew. No doubt. Yurtseven seems to be the priority recruit to cover Derrickson's departure.
Hope the patch quilt recruiting works out in the end. Ewing has done yeoman's work to cobble together recruits last year and again this year. He misssed on Waters (that was a 100:1 long-shot) and Sodom, but snagging Pickett, Blair, McClung, Leblanc, and Carter is pretty impressive only 12 months into the job.
Add Akinjo and Yurtseven and I'd give Patrick a solid A on recruiting this early into his career. Like, that would be seriously impressive.
Would hope, beginning with Class of 2019, we will be scrambling less and on a more programmatic pathway (although that may be a thing of the past in college basketball in the modern era).

Not sure if I buy the reason Patrick continued recruiting for forward / big wing position. Hoyas had nothing up front after Govan and Derrickson. That is why Patrick keeps recruiting. Players in waiting this years are more wings than solid bigs and the freshmen coming are on the small side for filling a big role. There has been a need for depth for bigs, also shooters are wings, and the need for ball handlers (particularly that can run point).
This isn't trashing the players we have as they are really good, but most were brought in for a different system. Pickett shows a ton of promise, and Blair has glimpses, but with bigs there isn't much.

That's not much of a drop-off at all, plus it doesn't take into account the continued progression of a player like Yurtseven (e.g., if he improves next season, he will improve upon his 3.4 PARP from last season).

To illustrate Ranch's point, Derrickson went from 2.0 to 3.9 between sophomore and junior seasons. Just saying.

I don’t disagree but my devil’s advocate counter argument is that MD’s number would certainly be higher (especially with better PG play) and it would be tough to expect Yurtseven to vastly improve in his first year within a new system while sharing the floor with another seven footer.

If Ewing's Hoyas were a more mature program with established recruiting and a deeper on-team talent pool, having a very talented player leave after three solid years would not be an issue.
At this point in the Ewing era however this is a huge loss. The team needs all the talent it can get to build a culture of success and losing your best offensive player is definitely going to hurt. This loss could set the program back by a season.
On the positive side, losing one of JT3's starters gets Ewing one step closer to have a team of "his" guys and all the positives that could imply. We're not going to really find out the coach Ewing can be until the team is fully of his making. Derrickson moving on now could advance that culture shift by a bit.
All in all, I hate to lose him but hopefully he'll find success and the team will quickly move on and up.

I think the key here is that the 3.4 PARP is the 4th highest among eligible transfers. We have nobody on our roster who comes close to Derrickson, so if we don't get Yurtseven, we will be playing with one player who is likely significantly lower in quality. Even if Yurtseven comes back and isn't as good as Derrickson, he's still way better than the alternative. This past year, we consistently had 2 guys on the floor who could score, and now we have one. We need all the help we can get.

Pretty sure this is not how WS or WARP work. You were the one supporring the argument that Yurtseven’s WARP would go up, so naturally I’m concluding MD’s would. I get it’s a calculation in a vacuum but better PG play would in theory mean more quality opportunities for MD. Regardless, it’s clear we have to land Yurtseven if we want to keep any semblance of production that we were planning on having. Otherwise I just can’t see how the same team plus freshmen in LeBlanc and Mac less a senior MD has us any better in the ‘18-19 season.

The question isn't whether or not we'd be better with MD or not. We clearly would be better with him.
But without him will we still be better than this year? That's not as clear considering all the places to pick up value (development of six returning players, replacement of negative Dickermore, depth that was literally non-existent). Still have to see where the recruiting season ends to have any clue and even then, really won't have an idea until early in the season with so many moving parts.
