Nice pull for St. John's whether he plays this season or not.. Hope he's right about that top ten. It will help the Hoyas' RPI when they get at least one win against them.

Citing Copeland as an example of the waiver being granted.. Yeah that's a reach for a desperate fan base. Copeland physically had back surgery after his transfer and didn't play enough games before his transfer to count as a season. Copeland was a strange grant for the NCAA but that was based on his own recent medical history. Heron had no such physical issues or limitations to limit him playing in conference games. The waiver he's looking for hasn't been granted in years. But it's worth the request because of the NCAA's fickle decision making patterns. I'm sure Georgetown's compliance office is scouring the NCAA rule book and other precedents to find an appeal avenue for Omer Yurt7 as well. There's no penalty or reason not to...

This strikes me as optimistic. I certainly think St. John's could be at top 25 team if he's eligible and everything works out. But, St. John's has had some talent in the past too, and Mullin has done nothing with it. That said, Ponds is a very formidable guard, and this latest addition will help either this year or next.

From reading articles on the rule change, it seems as though the rules for FBS hardship waivers are now different than CBB's The NCAA changed the rule for FBS because so many kids RS to start their college careers so having to sit a year when transferring hurt them.. The NCAA took away hardship waivers for FBS but allows kids to request a 6th year of eligibility to make up for it.. I don't think CBB follows these same guidelines..

When has he had talent like this? He hasn't - and I didn't mean to imply he has, I just think Mullin has struggled with what he has had. For the Big East's sake, I hope they are a top 25 team - they certainly could be. This may be all academic anyway, since the NCAA has moved away from hardship waivers. Check out this, from 2015: bleacherreport.com/articles/2401548-ncaa-wont-accept-hardship-waivers-for-transfers-seeking-immediate-eligibilityNCAA President: That's not to say Heron won't get a hardship waiver, but the NCAA has clearly moved away from those types of waivers.

I think he gets the waiver. I kind of think so as well based on the fact that he didn't go pro and is transferring away from a team that has the chance to be very good. I know he wouldn't have been drafted but he would've played at a decent level had he gone pro so why come back to school to sit? Could he use that as some leverage against the NCAA? I would hope for his sake that he has had someone contact the NCAA and that he got the feeling he would get it. All that being said I agree based on precedents he wouldn't get it. I also see how the same thing could be said for Yurt7 so who knows. I still don't understand his decision either although I am quite happy about it. I also hope he gets it as this is a chance for St. John's to finally escape the doldrums and maybe make it back to respectability which would be great for the BE. They could be saying the same thing about Yurt7.

Good catch on this article/quote from Emmert.. Still, think this rule is geared more towards football players who regularly RS early in their careers than basketball players...

They have two good girls one ok guard and one ok undersized power forward so I don’t see a top 25 team

While it would be great if Yurtseven is eligible, there's an argument to be made that he'd be more valuable for the team if he had to sit a year and then was our starting center in 2019-2020. As of now, we basically have nobody to replace Govan (though I hope that changes), and Yurtseven isn't the type of player likely to get a ton of minutes beside Govan. So, while I would love to have him eligible ASAP, and I realize there's some risk that if he's not eligible this year he will never play for us, it could work out for the best depending on how things shake out.

Nah, I want him now. Winning cures everything and that gives us the best chance to win immediately. The more (talent), the merrier!

prhoya, I agree, and I am happy to have him this year. But, if it doesn't work out, at least there may be a silver lining.

prhoya, I agree, and I am happy to have him this year. But, if it doesn't work out, at least there may be a silver lining. I agree, but glass half-full, we're getting a stud big for '19 (we're in with a lot of them). So, if that's the case, this year's situation (Omer + Govan) will apply next year (Omer + stud). Omer averaged 23 mpg in his last year at NC St. From the videos, it looks like Omer is very versatile for a big, so I'm guessing he could get mpg at the 5 and 4. But, first, he needs to be available. When will we know? Nova's roster is still in flux with Reid under consideration. SJU is trying to get a hardship waiver for Heron. I'm guessing we'll know the final BE rosters around mid-August and this will be the norm from now on.
