Recruitment: Georgetown, Louisiana Lafayette, Louisiana Tech, LSU, UAB, Wichita State and others have offered. Why his stock could rise: A powerfully built and tough point guard, Cook has been blowing up box scores in New Orleans this winter. He scores off the dribble, he keeps defenders honest with the jumper and he definitely doesn't play scared. If he goes out on the grassroots scene and gets buckets like he has his during junior year, things will really take off. basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/breakout-session-juniors-who-could-see-their-stock-take-off-this-spring

OPTIONS APLENTY FOR COOK
One of the top football athletes down south, Jalen Cook has the chance to play both on the gridiron and on the hardwood in college. However, Cook remains indecisive on which sport he will play next year, though offers are not in short supply.
After helping lead his Louisiana Elite squad to a comeback win on Friday evening, Cook told Rivals.com that Georgetown, Houston and LSU are the three schools standing out. However, the football field has kept calling his name as he holds close to 20 scholarship offers on that specific side.

“We knew Jalen would have to shoulder a big load on offense and also take on the major leadership role,” Walker coach Anthony Schiro said. “He did everything we asked of him and the thing about Jalen is he always works. Last summer he spent a lot of time in the gym and got better in every phase of the game.” While leading Walker to the state title game for the second year in a row, the 6-foot junior guard averaged 29.5 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 2.8 steals per game this season. A two-sport standout who holds notable scholarship offers for football as a wide receiver-defensive back and a point guard, Cook worked meticulously, making 250 shots each of seven assigned spots on the court daily to perfect his shooting touch. “Ever since I was little, I’ve always played aggressive and more than anything else, I want to win,” Cook said. “I hate losing. When you win, it makes my teammates and the fans happy. I want to be the best at everything, and I want my team to be the best at everything.” The Wildcats lost to Thibodaux in the Class 5A title game in March, a year after winning the 5A title, the school’s first in boys basketball. Cook was more of a facilitator for Walker’s 2018 title team. Two games in 2019 provide examples of Cook’s ability to take over a game. He scored 38 points in a win over Scotlandville and 37 in a semifinal victory over second-seeded Ouachita Parish. “When Jalen Cook steps on the floor, he wants to be the best player out there in every phase of the game,” Madison Prep coach Jeff Jones said. “He’s not just a guy who can score. He wants to guard the best player on the other team too.” stylesportsnews.com/walkers-jalen-cook-named-mr-basketball-2019-the-daily-advertiser/

"Jalen ... he's a special player and he's also a complete player," Walker coach Anthony Schiro said. "He has that ‘it’ factor. He knows what the team needs at a particular time in a game. We might need a basket or a defensive stop, and he'll step in to provide that. "He took on the leadership role this year, following the example some older guys set for him. He's very unselfish and loves the game. There are days when Jalen stays after practice to work or he'll come in to work out after games. He deserves all the attention and awards he gets because he does work so hard." “Jalen Cook is virtually unstoppable,” Catholic High coach Mark Cascio added. “He hits tough, contested shots in crunch time. I think he shoots, drive and handles the ball at a level that’s unmatched right now (in this state).” www.theadvocate.com/baton_rouge/sports/high_schools/article_68b9ac48-4720-11e9-bb97-476fe5995f12.html

Cook’s received similar interest from Georgetown and Wichita State, both of whom have offered basketball scholarships, in making unofficial visits. It would be an opportunity to get a better feel for their respective programs and campuses, thus setting the stage for important fall of official visits – for either football or basketball – where Cook will eventually decide on the school of his choice. “Whatever place feels like home, I’m going to go with that,” Cook said. “Once you’re comfortable with it, you can play your best. That motivates you to get up every day and go work out when it feels like home. The discussions with my family will also help a lot. “At the end of it all, whatever sport that I want to do in college and at the next level to wake up and enjoy to do, that’s what I’m going to do,” Cook said. “Whatever sport I love the most. I don’t plan to do two sports in college, but you never know what God’s got planned.” www.4-5alockerroom.com/schools/football-basketball-decisions-decisions-decisions-walker-s-two-sport-standout/article_c575e18c-57a5-11e9-a974-a31876a4b029.html

Man we are in on so many good point guards in 2020. I think Cook might be my favorite of the whole group!

I would be shocked if he doesn’t go to LSU regardless of what sport he chooses.

Fwiw most people think he chooses football...
LSU lean as LA stated above, but you could see a scenario where he ends up at Gtown if he chooses b-ball for obvious reasons..

I know football in the south is a different deal, but with everything we know today about football's health impact, I don't know how football would be the preference if you had pro potential in 2 sports. I love football, but coming out of it without serious repercussions is rare. And if you can't make the major US pro league (NFL, NBA, MLB, etc.), basketball has the most international options where you can make a good living (except for soccer, but that also has more global competition). I know these things aren't fully logical decisions, but you'd hope he has a strong adviser talking to him about long-term prospects. And if not, maybe AI can talk to him about bball vs. football.

Which sadly probably weighs more heavily in the calculus than the long term health effects.
