Perhaps MSG will be a better venue.

Wow if this Depaul score holds, this could be a chance to bury the Johnnies. Ouch.

St John's is a better match up for us than Creighton was. They're not a good 3 point shooting team, their offense is mostly 1-on-1, they're not very deep so vulnerable to foul trouble, and watching them against Depaul also not great defensively. Keep our turnovers down so they can't run in transition, and we'll have a good shot.

This went from sentimental throwback game to one the Hoyas really need.

Both of these schools need to move away from sweater game nostalgia.

Huge game for the Hoyas, who need all of the league wins they can get.

St John's is 0-4 in Big East games so far. Marcus LoVett has not played since late November (due to an injury)and they are not a deep team. Good opportunity to get a road win.

Shocking to see SJU as an 8 point favorite. Of course they can beat us, but to assume a win by nearly double digits seems too much, but maybe I am biased? The Johnnies seem to play better on the road in BE play versus at home. I hope that trend continues.
I see no reason why we should go into this game with any lack of confidence. This is a very winnable game and SJU is not Creighton. Reduce turnovers, shoot to our averages and play defense that forces bad shots. I think that is enough.

It will be big to jump on them early and get a lead. St John's will start playing some hero ball and taking bad shots if they fall behind. As much as the Hoyas are not feeling too good after that bad loss over the weekend, the Johnnies have not won a Big East game yet this year and the pressure will be building. St John's is an athletic and active team that can create turnovers, so taking care of the ball will once again be a huge factor. St John's has really struggled in the half court at times this year so if you can keep them from scoring off turnovers this is a really winnable game. My guess is the reason they are 8 point favorites is that everyone assumes they will come out and play desperate tomorrow, along with the fact that the Hoyas played so poorly last game.

I'm not sure what to make of St. Johns losing big to DePaul and Providence, but they played Creighton a lot tougher than us . . on the road. They also have a couple of legitimate out of conference wins and some reasonable losses to good teams. Considering we're not at home, getting 8 pts. sounds about right. We really need Jesse and MD to both show up, a la DePaul.

I do not think that St. John's will have any trouble coming out aggressive against the Hoyas. I am certain their players feel they are playing an inferior team. The issue will be how the Hoyas come out. If the Hoyas can avoid falling behind early this game could be very competitive. If not, it could be a blowout loss. I do not think this Hoya team is without talent. I believe that they have the ability to play with all but a few of the BE teams. However, the coach is going to have to alter his approach a little to fit the skills on the team. He is also going to have play the players who are giving the effort and avoiding the careless mistakes.

This is a very winnable game and SJU is not Creighton. Reduce turnovers, shoot to our averages and play defense that forces bad shots. I think that is enough. It's because, right now, St. John's is probably the better team, and this is an away game for us.. It's true that they are 0-4, but the only "bad" loss among their losses is to DePaul (other losses: Creighton by 7; Seton Hall by 5; Providence by 18). For what it's worth, on KenPom we are ranked 100, they are ranked 72. We are projected as 28% to win, with a margin of 7. Of course, this is a projection of odds, we will either win or lose once. But, it does demonstrate that it's not an easy game for us. Using Sagarin, we are ranked 91, St. John's is 71. I really think HoyaTalk generally is a little slow in coming to realize how bad we are and have been because we are all fans and want the team to succeed. Aside from Esherick's horrible 2004 team, which was ranked 124, this current team is 100. Even the worst John Thompson III teams were never that bad. I am not blaming Ewing at all - there is usually a dip after a coaching change because of recruiting/personnel changes. That said, this is very much a winnable game for us. A few things are to our advantage: (1) St. John's is a bad shooting team; thus, even when we have our defensive lapses, St. John's is not as well equipped to take advantage as Creighton was. In fact, they are downright bad - 271st on twos (47.1%), and 223 on threes (33.6%). (2) St. John's is below average in getting offensive rebounds, and really bad on defensive rebounds (318 of 335). (3) St. John's doesn't get to the line as much as we do. But, the major factors against us: (1) St. John's is a pretty good defensive team. (2) They take care of the ball well, and are 6th best in the nation in forcing turnovers, and very good at getting blocks and steals. (3) Their 2 PT defense is actually quite good, which could hurt Derrickson/Govan as they play in the post. Both teams have a high average possession length and long defensive possession length. My guess is that it's a mess of a game no matter who wins.

This is a rivalry game inside of MSG. Everything is out of the window. Nothing else matters. So ya'll knows what this means. It's going to be a good, hard fought and tough game. I think the Hoyas will be ready and up for the challenge. Let go Hoyas!
