When the going gets rough sometimes you just have to get tough, smart and play hard. In other words, "just keep playing hard." Over the Christmas and New Year's break I listened to most of the second half of the Hoyas game on the radio. The blue and gray were down by double digits, but then I heard Coach Ewing yell out, "just keep playing." I think this is all he could tell his team at this moment during the game. The Hoyas seemed nervous and tight.
Marquette's Rowsey scored 35 points in 34 minutes and went 11-11 from the free throw line. As I was watching the Georgia/Oklahoma game the Bulldogs were down at the half 31-17, but Bulldog coach Kirby Smart didn't look worried. As a football fan I was sort of surprised, but as a coach I wasn't surprised when I saw his facial expression at the end of the second quarter. In his halftime interview he was asked, "so coach what are you going to say to your team in the locker room being down by 14 points?" Coach Smart said, "I'm going to tell my team since they seemed tensed up, to just "settle down and go play." (“Settle down and go play,” Smart said. “Our guys [played] a little nervous. They got to play relaxed and get after the quarterback.”)

Although the Hoyas didn't come up with a win, the blue and gray came back strong from double digits (on the road) and only lost by 9. I think if Coach Ewing didn't yell out, "just keep playing" this wouldn't have been the case. Georgia did win in OT. After their first possession of the second half the Sooners "immediately" (.11 seconds) scored a touchdown making the score 31-24. Now I'd have to say those Bulldogs must've listened to what their coach said at the half because they seemed loosed/relaxed and came out playing hard and had some fun.
I guess what I'm trying to say is for our Hoyas' and coaches to keep telling them to go out play hard, tough and have some fun. I think we'll see more wins in and consistency in conference play. You think? After all it's only college basketball. As a coach I've seen many coaches including myself when the rough got going in tournament games and my team were so tense I had to stop and think to myself, "let's not run too many plays, let's just let tell the young people, just go out and have some fun." With this I saw better results and even wins take place. I'm thinking out loud, so let me know what you think.
