whitegamehats picks Butler by 12. augustusfinknottle picks Butler by 2. Butler wins by 2. whitegamehats wins. Please refer me to the judging criteria. Thank you. The rules are posted in the season's first game prediction thread. For your convenience, here you go (rules copied from previous year): hoyatalk2.proboards.com/thread/30533/jacksonville-georgetown-prediction-threadSo, for the Butler game, Butler won with a final score of 91-89. Everyone who picked GU to win was eliminated. Then, whitegamehats predicted Butler winning 78-66 and augustus predicted 72-70. whitegamehats: (91-78) + (89-66) = 13 + 23 = 36 off the actual final score augustus: (91-72) + (89-70) = 19 + 19 = 38 off the actual final score Thus, whitegamehats won by 2 points. Opponent's score is a tie-breaker.

OK I looked at it. First tie breaker (a) is closest to actual margin of (in this case) defeat.

I have been in executive session with prhoya. He said he will explain how he applies judging criteria later tonight so I will not presume to pre-empt him. Suffice it to say I think you may be surprised. I certainly was. He is open to amending the rules (or their interpretation). I think "many people" may want to do that.
In any case I am sure we are all grateful for his volunteer efforts.

You're welcome. Now, to meet my deadline.

OK. No drama. In prhoya's world "actual margin of victory or defeat" means something other than "actual margin of victory or defeat". This, I think, is the explanation for the confusion of so many. I look forward to his explanation of that to you. Res, apparently, non ipsa loquitur.

Augustus brought this up and maybe we should clarify the prediction rules as they stand. First of all, a little history for the newer posters: poster C2C came up with the prediction game several seasons ago and, after a several seasons, he explained that he was going to take a break from the Board due to other responsibilities (don’t remember exactly). Anyway, when the next season came around and to keep the contest alive as a fun and bonding thread among die-hards, I took over for him with the caveat that I was just keeping it for him until he came back. Time has flown by and here we are. As a sidenote, C2C spent a lot of time on it and gave awards and honorable mentions for stuff like creativity, getting Hoya and opponent scores correct, etc… IIRC, he had planned to create a spreadsheet, etc... I don’t have that time, so I only congratulate the winner and, now and then, something special that happens, like MassHoya’s three victories in a row, which had never happened, to start this season.
Since he set up the game, C2C also created the first set of rules, which have been amended throughout the years. The one major change was the first tie-breaker. Under the first rules, the first tie-breaker to determine the winner was “closest to total score”, or something similar. As he explained with an example, it meant that the winner was the poster closest to the total score of the game. This is better understood with an example. I’ll use the 91-89 total final score of the Butler game. Under the first rules, that winning total score was 180. Thus, for C2C, the winner could be a poster who predicted a winning total score of 179-1. Various posters considered it ridiculous that that score was better than, say 91-87, but those were his rules. As the years went by, and by popular demand (the posters who voted), the first tie-breaker was eliminated.
His second tie-breaker became the first tie-breaker now: closest to the actual margin of victory or defeat. As he explained then, under this tie-breaker, the winner was the poster who was closest to the points scored by both teams. That was C2C’s explanation, not mine; I’m just following what he did.
In other words, and using the final score of Butler 91, GU 89 as an example, plus the actual posted predictions, only augustus and whitehats picked Butler to win. Everyone else was eliminated. Then, we proceeded to the first tie-breaker with whitegame’s prediction of Butler winning 78-66 and augustus predicting Butler winning 72-70.
So the math goes like this: whitegamehats: (Butler’s 91 minus whitegame’s 78) added to (GU’s 89 minus whitegame’s 66) = 13 + 23 = 36 pts So, his prediction was 36 off the actual final score of both teams.
augustus: (91-72) + (89-70) = 19 + 19 = 38 So, his prediction was 38 off the actual final score of both teams.
Following C2C’s explanation, whitegamehats was closest to the actual margin of defeat by 2 points.
Augustus mentioned above that he was closest to Butler’s score than whitegame’s prediction. Although true, that is tie-breaker (c) “Closest to Opponent's actual score”, which does not apply to this game because it is only reached after two or more posters tie in the explained above tie-breaker (a) and tie-breaker (b) “Closest to Hoyas' actual score”.
As I’ve pointed out throughout the years, I kept the prediction contest going as something fun for HoyaTalkers. C2C was the creator and I’m just the keeper (for the time being/until he returns/until someone else wants to take over/until there are no predictions/etc…). But, as he allowed, the rules were amended and can be amended again. So, augustus, if you don’t like the current rules as explained above, please propose an alternative to be considered by all and voted by fellow posters. When time and family allow, I can do the current tally rather quickly, but if a new version is more time-consuming, someone else will need to take over.
I hope this has been helpful. Any other questions, please feel free to ask.
Cheers and good luck re: your predictions!
