The men start their indoor season today at the Navy Invitational. The women start Tuesday also at Navy. Should be a bunch of new faces starting today for the Hoyas.

There was a meet at the Indiana on Dec. 8. Only two men ran in the invitational 5000m.
Finals 1 #98 Veatch, Ben Indiana University 13:57.27 2 #248 Thies, Jeff University of Portland 14:00.55 3 #101 Chemadi, Kigen Middle Tennessee State Univ. 14:01.44 4 #102 Choge, Jacob Middle Tennessee State Univ. 14:05.26 5 #247 Orndorf, Logan University of Portland 14:07.16 6 #250 Welch, Matt University of Portland 14:09.19 7 #31 Andresson, Hlynur Eastern Michigan University 14:11.10 8 #249 Webb, Caleb University of Portland x14:22.48 9 #37 Crozier, Michael Georgetown University 14:25.64 10 #32 Bouchikhi, Lahsene Eastern Michigan University 14:30.65 11 #33 Lenneman, Mitchell Eastern Michigan University 14:32.86 12 #151 Miller, Bryce U of Missouri Kansas City 14:53.93 13 #34 Matko, Csaba Eastern Michigan University x14:59.96 --- #36 Carpenter, Scott Georgetown University DNF
I hope Scott was serving as the rabbit or doing a tempo workout and was not injured. Mike Crozier was needed during XC season, but he may not have had eligibility for XC. Anyway a decent opening run, especially since this was his first competitive run in a long time.

The men were supposed to be at George Mason for the Father Diamond/GMU Invitational meet, but so far no Hoyas in the results. Too cold to go across the city?

I guess they are waiting for next week to go to Penn State. The times were not very good at the GMU meet, so the men got a break and did not run. The Nittany Lion meet is usually a good one for the Hoyas.

The preseason indoor track and field standings have been released and the men are ranked 23rd in the nation. The rankings are based on returning athletes, who have turned in good times in those indoor events. So, Joe White is ranked 5th in the 800m and received points for that. Other Hoyas ranked in the top 25 in their events are Amos Bartelsmeyer in the mile, Scott Carpenter plus Amos in the 3000m, and Jon Green 6th in the 5000m (Scott pikes up a fraction of a point for being 34th). As the season goes on the marks from last year or the year before fade away and current marks move to the top.
The women are not ranked 86th with Piper Donaghu in the 800m and Kennedy Weisner in the mile, both in the top 20. The Hoyas would have been in the top 50 had Sabrina Southerland come back for a graduate year. Instead Sabrina brings her 6th place ranking to Oregon, which is the #1 ranked women's team.

Both men and women have full rosters for the Nittany Lion Invitational tomorrow at Penn State. Enough for this meet to have it own thread.

Yes, you beat me, birdman, as I was about to post this. However, you forgot that another Hoya alum was also in the race, Sam Nadel, who also had a good time. Sam also ran for Oregon after she graduated from Georgetown. Section 1 1 939 Westaway, Jenna Brooks 4:36.17 2 128 Southerland, Sabri Oregon 4:40.40 3 117 Hull, Jessica Oregon 4:41.27 4 361 Nadel, Sam Unattached 4:41.69 5 94 Butterworth, Alyci Idtc 4:44.43 6 123 Pendergast, Judy Oregon 4:46.04 7 25 Colón, Savannah Brooks Beasts 4:51.23 8 108 Cardama Baez, Carm Oregon 4:52.45 9 105 Abrahamson, Emma Oregon 4:52.80 10 370 Townsend, Addy Unattached 4:54.58 11 276 Nock, Paige Simon Fraser 5:09.98

It turns out that Sam Nadel has been approved for a 6th season to run outdoors for Oregon.

It would be interesting to know whether the recent # of 5th year transfers out of the program are viewed as good or bad for the program/recruiting. Obviously Oregon/Stanford(I think we've had a couple go to Stan too) think highly of our athletes(which is a good thing, maybe decent reflection on the coaches). On the other hand we used to get really top 5th years come here, which seems to only happen occasionally now-kind of indicating we're viewed maybe like a good ivy competitively(conversely not a great vote of confidence in coaches). I have no issue with the athletes leaving, might be good for them both academically and running wise. Just curious whether anyone has any insight re how this trend of people doing their 5th year elsewhere is viewed and will it continue.

The men have fallen from 23rd to 27th in the nation, essentially because some teams riding some very good marks have moved ahead of the Hoyas. The women dropped from 86th to 90th, because of the same reason.

I don't understand these ratings. This week that has the Hoyas 25th indicated that they fell seven places, when in fact the Hoyas came up two spots from #27, which was a drop in four spots from the original rankings.

Yeah, I'm not sure about their methodology (or really what their "points" are derived from), and I was surprised to see the men in a Top 25 given the lack of top performances so far this season. At the moment, if our times remain as they are, I wouldn't expect the men to have a representative at the indoor champs. Hopefully that changes after ISU and BU Valentine this weekend!

Each top effort in each event gets points. I think Rey Rivera's 800m last week got some points, which moved us up. I think they still have times from last year. Eventually, they will move those points out and just have marks/points from this year. This website has top marks in each event and you can look at how Georgetown gets their points. I think Joe White's 800m probably has the most points for us.

This is the page with the top results. I was wrong about Rey, as he was not in the top 20, and if he scored a point, it was less than one. The only time from this year is the DMR, which is ranked 7th in the country with 9.45 points. The other scorers from previous years: Jon Green 11.23 in the 5000m, Scott Carpenter 7.94 in the 3000m, Amos in the mile with 1.14, and Joe in the 800m with 13.45. Joe hasn't run this year and Scott hasn't completed a race, while probably serving as a rabbit in some of the races this year. www.ustfccca.org/assets/rankings/div1/2018-itf/DI_2018_indWk3_TF_NationalRankingsByEvent.pdf
