Why is he quitting after one semester? That's a red flag to me. Seems to me the KY staff and teammates were supportive of him but it didn't seem to matter to him unless there is more to the story. He's transferring because he's barely playing at Kentucky (averaging 7 minutes per game in conference play). I'm not saying his results and stats deserved more minutes, but he thinks that it's not the right school for him. www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/kahlil-whitney-1/gamelog/2020We have 5 scholarships available. It’s a win-win situation.

Does he have a pulse and can he qualify? That's where I start my assessment.
We are severely undermanned this year and next. Bring in some horses and restock the stable. A couple of them might take the bit.

We are in no position to turn away talent.
Many more reasons go into this decision than just PT. This is a kid who just moved away from home for the first time in his life. It didn’t work out.
We would be very fortunate to pull in a guy of his talent given our roster. Maybe he’s not really a 5*, but he’s better than anything else we are getting to fill out this roster.

Problem is short of a waiver, he can’t help next year.

Is this sarcastic? All I've read on here is how this season is made more depressing because next year looks worse. And then a 5 star McD-AA out of high school who had Gtown in its top 4 prior to picking UK is rumored to be a Gtown lean and we should "Pass"? I honestly dont know what you guys think is the right path anymore. I don't think we should pass but the kid isn't a 5*...he is a solid 4* with freakish potential...hopefully he realizes that 1 1/2 yrs of training with Ewing can get him to his goals.....

If he comes in and plays well enough to the point where he can comfortably get drafted in the league, I'm pretty sure the program will reap the rewards of that play with some level of on the court success that hasn't happened yet under this staff. Even if that's the case, I would chalk that up as a win for this program (i.e. Ewing developed what Cal couldn't, a likely NCAA berth, maybe attracting some other strong players to come join him in the interim).
If he comes in and doesn't live up to the 5-star ranking and leaves out of frustration, at least we took a shot on talent instead of settling for someone else with a much lower ceiling. I can live with that.
I understand the concern of defections especially since so many of them happened recently, but there is a huge difference between trying to add a high 4/low 5 star transfer unhappy about PT vs. a high 3 / low 4 star transfer who had character issues and was already dismissed by another program (and one that's not exactly known for setting a high bar for compliance to begin with). The potential positives far outweigh the negatives here.

A story by the Kentucky beat writer for The Athletic says that Whitney's dad is part of the reason he has struggled at Kentucky. Cal was working to convince Whitney to focus on using his extreme athleticism to serve as a strong defender/rebounder for this season, as he developed his skill level. Apparently Whitney's dad did not agree with this plan, and this is the primary reason Whitney is leaving. Dad seems focused on getting his son to the NBA ASAP, and he wants Whitney playing big minutes as an offensive centerpiece, not 20 minutes a game primarily as a defender/rebounder. The writer said that Whitney himself is a great kid, but that the dad is not giving him good advice. the writer speculates that Whitney/his dad don't want to spend any more time in college, but that Whitney may have to because his professional options may not be very desirable at this point.
Who knows how true this all is. Plus Orr has a long, strong relationship with Whitney's dad that might mitigate some of these issues if they are real. But on the surface - a player whose dad inaccurately views him as a superstar offensive player who deserves to be the centerpiece of a team - is not exactly the profile we are really looking for in a player right now.
That being said - tough to turn down a talent like Whitney at this point if he in fact does want to go to Georgetown. We'll just have to wait and see how this all turns out. But one thing seems certain - there would probably be some degreee of real risk in bringing in Whitney. Nothing is ever simple for the Hoyas these days!

I don’t see how there’s any risk at all here

I am happy to roll out the red carpet for any 4 or 5 star that wants to transfer to Georgetown. I hope one day we can get these kids the first go around.

I don’t see how there’s any risk at all here I agree. I don't understand how anybody could say we should pass on the kid. The upside: (1) He was a five star recruit, (2) Even if he isn't really a five star recruit, he still would have been ranked high or in the top 100, the type of kids we need, (3) for better or worse, it'd be noteworthy to pull in a highly regarded recruit, even if it's after he disappointed in his performance at Kentucky, (4) we needs wings, and (5) have you seen our roster beyond this season? There is really no downside. Worst case scenario, the kid comes in, and either leaves to go professional, or stays and doesn't perform great. In either scenario, we are no worse off than we are today, with 7 open scholarships after this season. Also, I do think it's notable that there is reporting that Calipari wanted Whitney to stay. That means that Calipari still valued the kid. If the kid was a problem, etc., it's hard to think Calipari would have tried to keep him from transferring. It's not even remotely comparable to a guy like Galen Alexander, who was dismissed from a team (LSU) for violating rules, etc. I do think it's bizarre that he'd transfer now, and not before January 15, when Kentucky began classes. Had he left 10 days ago, he could have immediately enrolled elsewhere and been eligible next December, instead now he is going to have to wait until fall 2021 unless he gets a waiver.

Does Whitney want a new program to try to win and develop at or is he looking to be showcased? Those are the big questions in my opinion..

No matter how talented Whitney is, if he comes to Georgetown primarily to try to audition his offensive game for the NBA, there is a real chance it won't work out well for anybody, and keep the growth of the program stuck in neutral. If he comes to Georgetown to do anything he can to help Georgetown win, and to develop his overall game in the process - then great, welcome to the Hilltop!

Those are the big questions in my opinion..[/quote] Think Cal already sent the message: he has to develop before he can get to a level where he can be showcased. If he was there already, he wouldn't have been phased out at UK. Now who knows, maybe he goes the way of Kyle Wiltjer and makes an impact elsewhere after UK. I also don't think we should shy away from a guy who wants to be showcased as long as it's not to the detriment of the team. This team has a lot of complementary players but is sorely lacking in alpha dogs who might one day be asked to put a team on their backs and will them to victory. Now, I've seen very little of Whitney so I can't label him a selfish player or someone who would definitely disrupt team chemistry. But yes, Ewing's got to do his due diligence (along with Orr) to ensure everyone involved has a common goal: he gets better, and in doing so he helps the team win. If that's not the case, then they can walk away. But if they walk away, they had better have a Plan B in place, because it's hard to see one right now.

I can’t believe we are sitting here debating whether we should take a 5-star recruit. We are more than likely going to finish in the bottom quartile of our league and miss the tournament yet again. We need ballers, period! We lose Allen, Yurtseven and Mosely.
