After the game today Ewing: Even though we’re 10-1 we can’t be happy with that. No one expects us to be successful.
Why does he insist on lower expectations. He has a guaranteed contract. Enough of this defeatist talk.

Great coaching Coach Ewing. Looks like everything is on time. I can see the rhythm, the comraderie, and the chemistry. I am happy. I like the way the Hoyas are playing. Who cares about who wants us to be unsuccessful. There'll always be 'haters' no matter what the deal is. There's lots of "hate" here and this is suppose to be everyone's team lol. Wowzers.

Having watched or been to every OOC game I have to give kudos to coach Ewing. He has gotten so much more out of all these returning guys than I ever expected. Forget the gaudy (and probably inflated scoring and rebounding) numbers. Notice how Govan is playing so much smarter this year. No stupid fouls and no getting lost on D. Same with Derrickson. And you can see the uptempo style of play is so much better for Mulmore and Mosley. A month ago I really dreaded the BE season. Now, with the exception of Nova and maybe Xavier, I really expect us to hold our own in BE games. In fact I think the Syracuse game is a harbinger of things to come. I really think the difference between 5-13 and 8-10 or even 9-9 this year will be how well we can close out games, especially home games. I also feel very comfortable saying that this team, unlike JT3's last few teams, will be much better in February. You can see PE coaching up these guys all game. In short, call me a cockeyed optimist but I'm liking our chances this year. No I'm not predicting an NCAA bid but I am predicting that come March we will be very pleased with how this team performed and how PE coached.

This team is fun to watch and has tremendous potential. It's so refreshing to see an up tempo game and have a bench that really contributes. Patrick has gotten the best out of all of the players and it's only going to get better. Good luck Wednesday against Butler and Happy Holidays to all!

I for one really like what Coach Ewing is doing on the court and on the sidelines. What I have heard that is most imporessive about Patrick is everything he is doing off the court in terms of focusing on all the little things to create a winning program. He is actively working on unifying the school and the administration to do all the little things that are necessary for a winning program....including upgrading living accommodations for players, etc.. He’s always been extremely competitive and it’s now spilling over into how he runs this program.

He’s always been extremely competitive and it’s now spilling over into how he runs this program. Patrick being a presence on campus can only help to build some buzz among the students. I know that this generation of kids doesn't have the same reverence for him that mine or the one before mine does but his rep is huge and his influence can be as well. We can continue to harp on the schedule but, until there is interest from the students, what does it matter in the end? Starting with the culture in his first year is a smart move and could be the most important one moving forward. Playing for the name on the front of the jersey is great but if you have the support of your classmates and those classmates show some of the same pride that the guys do on the floor, then you've got something. We were, likely, never going to be a great team in the W/L column in Patrick's first year but that doesn't mean that there isn't a lot that can be accomplished both on and off the court. I'm glad to hear that he's going about building it the right way.

He's doing a great job. In the future, I would like to see a radio show and/or podcasts with him and players. And also more Hoya gear in stores in the area. Our brand is rebuilding. Go Hoyas! Merry Christmas.

Interesting challenge for Hoyas coming up. This is a game the Hoyas need to win if they are to exceed expectations. Good opportunity for Ewing and his staff to show the progress of their system on both ends of the court.

Enough of this defeatist talk. That's what you got from that quote. Telling his players not to rest on they're laurels and to keep working hard, that's not a defeatist attitude, that's continually motivating and keeping his players focused.

I don't see this as "defeatist" or "jaded" at all.
Expectations, from within the Hoya faithful community and at large, are lower than they have been for quite some time. That is a fact. Sounds to me like Ewing is challenging his team to prove the doubters wrong.

That statement comes from looking or hearing about the super negative commentz on this website and that of Casual Hoya. There are so many pessimistic, know-it-alls,crying about the schedule, discounting his experience, his recruiting abilities and more. It would be naive to think he's not aware. I believe he uses it as motivation for himself and the team. Certainly not everyone on these threads feel negative or spins crwp. But Ewing came here to win and is going to use this pessimism to motivate himself and his team. They are doing pretty doggone good. They are going to play hard and smart, overachieve and not underachieve. And leave it all on the court.

When Ewing says people don’t expect us to be successful, I highly doubt it’s HoyaTalk or Casual Hoya that he is talking about. We were ranked 9 of 10 in the preseason Big East poll. I think it’s fair to say that nothing about the out of conference schedule changed that impression among most journalists, coaches, etc. Ranking sites like KenPom or Sagarin also put us 9/10 in the Big East. Thus, I think it’s safe to say that outside some fans nobody really expects much out of this team.
In that light, I would say Ewing is being realistic when talking about expectations.

I don't think he's concerned about the masses. I recognize what You've said but people were not only skeptical about the team but his coaching ability, his recruiting ability, etc....

Ok let's try it this way Ewing: No one expects us to be successful. Where the hell is he getting this jaded impression from? Or is it him trying to "exceed" expectations? Exsctly. We literally "won" 9th by a 6-3 vote over DePaul and people are asking where Pat is getting his information on expectations.

Expectations are deservedly low considering where this program was 8 months ago. Ewing is right to use that as motivation. No objective observer could look at this program, its new coach and the players and not feel that there were many troubling questions entering the season. There are still many questions entering the BE season, but the man has shown a dedication and a commitment to building the program that is refreshing. He has scored with the players who appear to be buying into his style of play, he has re-engaged with the students and he has enjoyed some very impressive support from the media, coaches and national pundits. It's a very impressive start for the coach and a nice Christmas present for fans of the program who have suffered through its decline in recent years. But I hope that chip stays right there on his shoulder and serves as extra motivation heading into a much tougher stretch than just endured, because it will not take too many losses before questions are raised again.
