Has anyone noticed that degree holding Georgetown alumni now include:
The Chairman of the Federal Reserve (pending confirm) The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Of Staff The White House Chief of Staff The Secretary of Homeland Security(pending confirm) The US Trade Representative The Director of OMB The Senate Minority Whip The House Minority Whip
If we were Yale, someone in the Press would be commenting about it. This is a level of influence on the order of Harvard in Kennedy Administration and Columbia in FDR's second term.

This is a level of influence on the order of Harvard in Kennedy Administration and Columbia in FDR's second term. Nielsen's confirmation hearing should be interesting in light of the continuing problems in Puerto Rico, to say the least. On Aug 27, 2005, two days before Hurricane Katrina made landfall, officials at the American Red Cross wrote to a top homeland security adviser at the White House, warning that the storm was likely to slam New Orleans as a major hurricane. The message was sent to Kirstjen Nielsen, whose title was special assistant to the president for prevention, preparedness and response. She was 33 years old. The 582-page bipartisan House report, “A Failure of Initiative,” specifically faults Nielsen’s White House team for failing to recognize the threat to New Orleans from Katrina and conveying the gravity of the situation after the storm hit. www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/trumps-pick-for-dhs-chief-was-at-center-of-katrina-disaster/2017/10/14/1a8f12a2-b067-11e7-9e58-e6288544af98_story.html?utm_term=.4d7a7466b627

Given the relative dysfuntionality of Government and public opinion thereof, is this something to crow about?

This is a level of influence on the order of Harvard in Kennedy Administration and Columbia in FDR's second term. This isn't the Kennedy administration or FDR's second term though. Publicize that your alumni are running this administration and people are going to start to question what kind of job you are doing at instilling a moral compass in your graduates cough cough Manafort.

While I mostly agree with you, Kennedy and Moral Compass should never, ever, be uttered in the same sentence.

Kirstjen Nielsen wins confirmation today. Hoyas now officially hold four of the top 23 positions in the Trump cabinet(Nielsen, Kelly, Lighthizer, Mulvaney); as well as the Chairman of the JCS (Dunford), and the soon to be official incoming Fed Chairman (Powell). Pretty good in a 320 million person nation with over 4,000 colleges.
If we ever lose to anyone in a route, we can chant "That's alright, that's ok, we will rule the world some day."

Another wise choice is made-President Trump nominated Robert Wilkie to be the permanent Secretary of Veterans Affairs. So after Senate action it will be an official 7 out of 25 top spots in the US Govt. VA is the second largest agency with 360,000 employees (the third largest is Homeland Security which is also a "hoya run" enterprise).

I’m not convinced that being in charge of this nation at this time is something to be proud of.

perhaps we could change the title of the thread to "ruining." www.washingtonpost.com/news/business/wp/2018/06/06/mick-mulvaney-fires-members-of-cfpb-advisory-board/My '89 classmates refuse to allow discussion of this classmate’s activity in our private Facebook group. apparently, at age 50, they consider civil conversation about politics to be derogatory if it is less than laudatory. they hide their heads in the sand and disappoint me so. as mentioned upstream, seems more like an opportunity to examine how our school seems to have completely failed to instill Jesuit values in some of its most prominent alums. Mick is an out and out plutocrats who has acknowledged selling influence and is now converting the agency designed to thwart abuse of power into an ally of the powerful. sad that any group of Hoyas would be afraid to examine his actions against our fellow citizens and our democracy.

Our '77 closed FB group is generally open to any political/religious discussion with a variety of viewpoints, although my impression is that most are opposed to Trump and his agenda. Most appear supportive of Pope Francis with few alums, not so much. A few adopt the Trumpian "Fox & Friends" view of the world but they appear to be in a distinct minority. I wonder if it is a generational difference? '77ers grew up in the wake of Watergate and the end of the Vietnam War. '89ers, the Reagan era.

Catholic values are not the bedrock of either party; in fact, both parties fall short. To its credit, the Church does not ally itself with either, whereas the collapse of bipartanship within evangelical Protestantism is a failure that few are willing to speak overtly to. As for mainline Protestants, well, this has been one of the most underreported stories of our age. They are disappearing from the national dialogue, literally and figuratively. www.vox.com/the-big-idea/2017/7/14/15959682/evangelical-mainline-voting-patterns-trump

Maria Shriver’s brother and daughter went to GU. Two of Maria’s kids went to USC, I believe.
