Is "conspiracy against the United States" a wow-that-sounds-bad but is kinda a standard charge, or is it pretty bad?

If you and I hatch a plan to launder money it is by definition conspiracy against the United States.

$75 million in hidden foreign payments with $18 million allegedly laundered. Mueller also threw in a violation of the Foreign Agents Registration Act despite Manafort's ex post facto registration. Now we can tie it into the GOP's platform change on supporting Ukraine since both Manafort and Gates were hired to run the convention. And Gates stayed on after Manafort was fired to run the inauguration and work with Trump's super PAC. Here's the indictment: www.lawfareblog.com/paul-manafort-jr-and-richard-gates-iii-indictment

Have detaiIs emerged as to the “when” of all this conduct?
Surely if it predates the June 2015 escalator ride, it does not relate to Trump campaign activities.

Surely if it predates the June 2015 escalator ride, it does not relate to Trump campaign activities. Other than being leverage for him to flip on everybody in said campaign.

I would argue that the change in the GOP platform on Ukraine relates to the Trump campaign. A superseding indictment is a possibility depending upon what else the investigation discovers. Throughout the campaign, Trump has been dismissive of calls for supporting the Ukraine government as it fights an ongoing Russian-led intervention. Trump’s campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, worked as a lobbyist for the Russian-backed former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych for more than a decade. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/global-opinions/trump-campaign-guts-gops-anti-russia-stance-on-ukraine/2016/07/18/98adb3b0-4cf3-11e6-a7d8-13d06b37f256_story.html

Anyone with strong evidence of violating federal law should be prosecuted. No matter who they are.

"President Trump plans to spend at least $430,000 of his personal funds" Personal funds? I thought he was paying his own legal bills with campaign funds though...

"President Trump plans to spend at least $430,000 of his personal funds" Personal funds? I thought he was paying his own legal bills with campaign funds though... As the linked article notes, the suckers at the RNC had paid approximately $430,000 in legal fees for Trump and Trump Jr. This is just another lie from Trump to make it look like he gives a sh*t about anyone other than himself or his family. I don't anticipate any personal fund will be expended, setting aside the ethical issues in doing so. If I'm an aggressive prosecutor I convert that offer into more obstruction of justice or attempted obstruction of justice, i.e., testify the "right" way and your legal fees are picked up.

The false statements to FBI he pleads guilty to were denying his attempts while employed in the campaign to collude with Russian govt officials _ Statement of offense: assets.documentcloud.org/documents/4163402/Papadopoulos-Statement-Offense.pdf“Since his arrest Papadopoulos met with the Government on numerous occasions to provide info and answer questions” Looks like he's cooperating...

One more screenshot of the document....
What Papadopoulos did after FBI interview: Deleted his FaceBook account with Russian messages. Stop using his cellphone. Went to Dulles, and got arrested.

I probably linked this months ago but in light of the indictments and the guilty plea, might be worth re-reading: Running a free and fair Presidential election is a core lawful function of the federal government. Any agreement to secretly and dishonestly attempt to interfere with a federal election would fall squarely within section 371’s prohibition on conspiracies to defraud the United States. Section 371 also prohibits conspiracies to commit any offense against the United States. This applies to conspiracies to violate any criminal statute. The United States government does not need to be the victim of the intended crime. sidebarsblog.com/collusion-russians-influence-election-crime/Plea agreement letter: www.justice.gov/file/1007341/downloadThe first big takeaway from this morning’s flurry of charging and plea documents with respect to Paul Manafort Jr., Richard Gates III, and George Papadopoulos is this: The President of the United States had as his campaign chairman a man who had allegedly served for years as an unregistered foreign agent for a puppet government of Vladimir Putin, a man who was allegedly laundering remarkable sums of money even while running the now-president’s campaign, a man who allegedly lied about all of this to the FBI and the Justice Department. The second big takeaway is even starker: A member of President Trump’s campaign team now admits that he was working with people he knew to be tied to the Russian government to “arrange a meeting between the Campaign and the Russian government officials” and to obtain “dirt” on Hillary Clinton in the form of thousands of hacked emails—and that he lied about these activities to the FBI. He briefed President Trump on at least some them. www.lawfareblog.com/robert-muellers-show-strength-quick-and-dirty-analysis
