Just spitballing here...some proposals (not necessarily fully hatched or fully baked) for NCAA reforms: 1. The NCAA should permit student/athletes to transfer without loss of immediate eligibility if the coach who recruited them (a) is fired by the university, or (b) leaves the university voluntarily for another coaching job before the student/athlete's eligibility has expired. 2. The NCAA should allow student/athletes to be drafted, but retain eligibility, from age 18 on (similar to the NHL model) by an NBA team or an NBA-G League team, which team shall retain the rights to the student/athlete for the lesser of (a) the expiration of that player/athlete's eligibility, or (b) a period of four years. The student/athlete shall lose eligibility upon the signing of a contract, but shall be permitted to hire an agent while retaining eligibility. 3. Student/athletes should have their eligibility expire upon the receipt of an undergraduate degree from the university, thereby eliminating graduate student/athlete eligibility. 4. The NCAA should allow student/athletes to be compensated and retain eligibility in the following manners: (a) compensation for use of likeness by the university, through a standard licensing fee; (b) an "appearance fee" similar to (but not at the same rate as) the SAG compensation rates for all televised games, to be paid out of the fees received by the university from the conference; and (c) a "winner's share" based upon team success in post-season conference tournaments and post-season championship tournaments (similar to MLB post-season shares). These aren't fully fleshed out, but I'd be curious as to what other posters think. We know the present system doesn't protect the student/athlete. I have never understood why the NHL draft model for NCAA and American high school kids can’t work for basketball.

Brian Bowen declared ineligible for 2018-2019 season..Will stay in draft.
So Bowen's father through away a promising career that was potentially worth millions for $19,500 illegal payment. Good news for Bowen and his family he will almost double his salary with the $36,000 he will earn in the G League. I'm not sure what his family circumstances are but risking a possibility of millions within 8-20 months over $19,500 is just ridiculously short sighted...

So let's play connect the dots... From the linked Yahoo Sports article: "The University of Maryland on Friday released documents confirming that it has received multiple subpoenas in connection with the federal investigation of corruption in college basketball. The first subpoena specifically targets information regarding Maryland assistant coach Orlando Ranson and an unnamed player." Then: "Additional redacted documents delivered by Maryland to Yahoo Sports on Friday pertained to former Adidas executive Merl Code, who has been charged in the probe, and former prospective recruit Silvio De Sousa, who wound up playing last season at Kansas. The subpoena sought all documents and communication between Ranson and De Sousa." Followed by: "In an April superseding indictment, a guardian of a Kansas recruit told Adidas they had received illicit payments in return for a commitment to steer the athlete to a university sponsored by a rival athletic apparel company. The guardian said the player favored Kansas and needed “another $20,000 payment” to “help get the student-athlete ‘out from under’ the deal.”" Which leads to: "The indictment then alleged the player made a surprise commitment to Kansas on Aug. 30, 2017. News accounts on that date show Silvio De Sousa, a native of Angola who attended IMG Academy in Florida, committed to Kansas. Previously, De Sousa was considered a strong favorite to attend Maryland, which has an apparel contract with Under Armor." And finally: "Less than three months after the NCAA certified his academic and amateur status, he [De Sousa] was implicated in a federal indictment alleging that his guardian received money in exchange for De Sousa playing for the Jayhawks." This looks like it could alter the recruiting picture in the DMV for a while.

Looks like Kansas Final 4 run last season will be vacated if true that De Sousa guardian took money. Between De Sousa and Billy Preston, Kansas is a dirty program!

This looks like it could alter the recruiting picture in the DMV for a while. I wonder if this investigation will dive into the Under Armour/Maryland/IMG Academy (Under Armour Sponsored boarding school) relationship to bore out any illegalities as IMG has become almost a feeder program to Maryland, Under Armour's signature college program.

This looks like it could alter the recruiting picture in the DMV for a while. With Big Ten money, Maryland isn't going away, and recruits aren't going to suddenly migrate to American or GW as a result.

With Big Ten money, Maryland isn't going away, and recruits aren't going to suddenly migrate to American or GW as a result. Granted that some recruits are seemingly immune to scandals and so it isn't like Maryland is going to disappear. But having the sharp contrast drawn even sharper between the two top destinations in the DMV can only help the Hoyas.

None of these big schools are going away. My only question is whether the Feds have scared the schools and shoe companies so badly that they'll curtail the funneling of money for recruits. Since all of this has been underground, I wonder if we'll ever know.

The question is not whether the big schools will 'go away". The question is whether there will be enough evidence of complicity by coaches or assistants that the NCAA will be compelled to slap schools with multi-year probations, tournament bans and scholarship reductions, which can affect even top schools for years.

Scandal hasn’t hurt USC so far; number one ranked 2019 recruiting class at this point.

How's UNC doing after not requiring kids to take classes? It's a sham and a poor one. Why not just pay the kids if the commitment to education is such an open joke?

Why not just pay the kids if the commitment to education is such an open joke? No...let them go pro like outta high school or to the G League like Bazely or Europe outta high school like others have done. There's great value in getting an education and a degree. The idea of paying players because a handful of recruits are taking illicit bribes is in my IMO short sighted. There is probably only 20 (in a good class) new recruits a year that cheating programs will take a chance and bribe. 20 outta 1500+ new D1 players every year. The large majority of D1 college basketball recruits will never sniff the NBA and will matriculate through college an earn their degree which will be highly beneficial for their careers go forward in life. Why pay players because because 0.01% are cheating. If anything colleges should just add value to the scholarships to include a living expense so athletes have pocket money. I'm hoping the Association adopts something like the baseball model where if you decide to go to college you can't be drafted until after at least your sophomore year. That will be more beneficial to helping clean up college basketball than opening Pandora's box and start paying players.

Why not just pay the kids if the commitment to education is such an open joke? Also your argument about UNC is invalid because the Feds weren't involved in that. If they were, major changes and penalties would have followed. Your mention of UNC is more of a criticism of the toothless NCAA. Feds are anything but toothless. The NCAA doesn't have to investigate much in the bribery scandal. Feds are doing most of the heavy lifting. UNC will probably get theirs through litigation. I believe their is a class action suit of former UNC students vs the university regarding the academic scandal pending...
