I don’t mean this specifically with Carter, but redshirting is likely not fully a coach-only decision (unless someone is recruited that way, which is different). It’s very possible that Carter himself doesn’t want to redshirt even if it only means he plays a small amount.
Keep in mind if you redshirt and then stay 4 years that basically adds a 5th year to college. Granted, that isn't necessarily a bad thing (many of us would gladly take another year at Georgetown), but not necessarily what all guys want to do.

The kid isn't playing this season so why would he object to taking a redshirt year? This same reasoning was used when folks talked about redshirting Bradley Hayes and Mourning too but both were happy to stay a 5th year...

Excepting track and field (which uses a redshirt year in due to the three different seasons in CC, indoor, and outdoor track), the only redshirts given by Georgetown are medical in nature. Neither basketball nor football has sat out players with a convenience redshirt.

Neither basketball nor football has sat out players with a convenience redshirt. I think it's shortsighted not to do it more in basketball but isn't Gtown football in the Patriot league which doesn't allow redshirting? As for basketball, the program is competing against programs that use it to their advantage regularly, I don't get why Gtown wouldn't follow suit when appropriate...

Maybe Grayson feels/hopes he can improve enough to contribute later in the season. Maybe Patrick has discussed with him the need to have him available - and therefore to get him even minimal minutes in spot duty in order to get his feet wet - in the event there is an injury, given our limited big man options. Redshirting a freshman can be beneficial for both sides, but I can understand some players not wanting to give up a year.

Redshirting a freshman can be beneficial for both sides, but I can understand some players not wanting to give up a year. If Carter were to do that, then, by all means, play him then.. Just because an RS is thought of as a good idea in October doesn't mean it can't be looked at differently in January... The players aren't giving up anything, they're actually gaining time in reality... www.mlive.com/wolverines/index.ssf/2012/12/michigans_caris_levert_thrille.htmlCaris LeVert wasn't going to complain if John Beilein opted to sit him out for the entire season. It would have given the Michigan freshman a chance to develop his body, to watch the college game from a new angle and catch up to the speed of everything.
But at the same time, everyone wants to play. So, when Beilein called LeVert into his office late last month and brought up the possibility of burning his redshirt, the Wolverine rookie didn't think twice about his answer.
"We had a little meeting in his office," LeVert recalled. "And I was really excited. Just to get a chance to play here is a dream come true.
"I'm just trying to do the best thing for the team." When the season began, Beilein made his intentions clear about the 6-foot-5, 170-pound LeVert clear. He was going to try his best to redshirt him, but wasn't promising anything.

I would love to see Grayson earn more playing time and see what his skills are. He's going to have to convince Coach Ewing in practice.

I think his best bet will be in games when Mourning or Govan gets in early foul trouble, and Coach needs to buy a few minutes.

His best bet to make a splash are the games following SMU and before conference play begins.

Looking at his clips from when he signed on, we could very much use his skill set. He seems equal at least to Trey Mourning who is very inconsistent! He has an outside shot, 3-point shooter.

I agree with this comparison. I think he will end up being a more athletic and more consistent shooter than Trey. I would think at this point the staff is waiting for him to get up to speed playing team defense and being in the right spots on the floor. While Trey struggles with a lack of athleticism on both ends of the floor he does seem to know where he is supposed to be and is very vocal on defense which is important with so many young/inexperienced players on the floor. Finding another consistent offensive option for the Hoyas would be really helpful with this team.

See how he does. It cannot be worse than the current sieve that is our defense.

I think we need to play him more THIS year, forget the redshirt. We're going to need more offensive frontcourt help next year with Govan and Mourning leaving, and we need to give this kid more game experience so he's ready to go next season. As mentioned before, he can't do any worse than Mourning.

Our players must be able to deliver on both sides of the court and play with understanding, assertiveness, and confidence. I believe that's big in Coach Ewing"s philosophy

Liked what I saw out of him tonight. Definitely still rushing but I think only more time will help him. I'm in the middle of rewatching the first half and he actually had pretty good defensive instincts and a good looking shot (that 3 with 23 sec left in the 1st was nice). Tonight was his career high min by quite a bit but that was clearly due to 2 quick fouls by both Jessie and Trey. Needs to put on more weight but I hope he gets more PT. He's a similar size to Mourning and can play much of the same role in the future (if not better), once he gains experience.

I actually thought on one defensive possession he did a nice job of rotating for help defense. It was only one possession so it's hard to say if it was merely a coincidence, but I didn't think he was bad or a stiff. And glad to see him make a three.

I loved his box-out of their center at the top of the perimeter arc when a shot went up. It was pretty deliberate even though they were 19' from the basket.

Glad to see them using him at the Center spot because once he gets stronger that will be his best position imo.
