I think this kid has great potential but I believe it is expecting too much for him to be a major contributor next year--particularly at the 4 or in some way as a replacement for MD. He is still very sleight and needs to get stronger. Did not see much tape and almost none of it involved defense so I admit the impressions are limited. It will be interesting to watch him in Kenner.

What's the story? Is PE going to let the kid get any playing time? Redshirt?

Right now, he is likely the 5th or 6th option at the 4/5 position. We haven't put teams away so there hasn't been opportunity to get him any significant playing time.

If Carter is not going to redshirt, Pat should give him some pt in those four games after Syracuse to see how he plays in an actual game.

We have had a hard time putting away some very mediocre teams. I don't think Patrick feels comfortable playing Grayson unless he is ready for this level, which apparently Ewing does not think at this point. But it would be interesting to see where Carter is at this point in his development.

I admit we’ve seen virtually nothing of Carter but he’s looked a little lost when he has been out there. That said, once we get past the next three tougher games I wouldn’t mind seeing a bit more of him to see what we’ve got. I’m sure Ewing has a good sense from practice though.

They have not really had too many games that would be considered blowouts where it would have been easy to give him a few minutes. I am interested to see what he can do, but I am sure the staff has a good sense from watching him practice. I hope they have an open line of communication going on with Grayson and he is onboard with whatever decision the staff seems to be making for his playing time. I don't know all the rules about this, but I always thought that there was a minimum amount of games that a player could play in and still be able to use a redshirt year. I understand why they have not come out and just declared this a redshirt year for him because if they have an injury in the front court they may have to use him, but if everyone stays healthy and he can get a redshirt year, and Grayson is Ok with that, it may help his development for the rest of his career.

I think this is the current rule for basketball. (I think football changed its redshirt rule to allow a certain number of games before redshirting). Redshirt: In Divisions I or II, redshirting refers to someone who is enrolled full-time at a school, but does not play for an entire academic year for the sole purpose of saving a season of competition. A redshirt does not play in any college games or scrimmage in a given sport for an entire academic year, even though that student is otherwise eligible. If you do not play in a sport the entire academic year, you have not used a season of competition. However, if you play in even one second of a game as a college student-athlete, you are not a redshirt. Redshirting does not exist in Division III because if you play or practice after your first opportunity to compete, you are charged with a season of participation. www.ncaa.org/student-athletes/current/transfer-terms

The minimum (actually maximum) games rule is only for medical redshirts, which requires a seadon-ending injury or medical condition, AND that the player has been available to play in fewer than (I believe it is 30%?) of the team's regular season games.

I believe you can still get an exception for a season-ending injury, though. In other words, if Carter does get hurt, he could petition for another year. Not that anyone would wish for that.

Why does this board operate under the assumption that there is some coaching error made when a freshman doesn’t get run in his first half dozen games? Everyone who hasn’t seen a practice is clamoring for Coach to change his rotation based on some fairness notion that kids deserve PT just cause they got a schollie. Shouldn’t the presumption be confidence Isla Coach’s decision making and optimism that the kid is being well coached and will improve? Not every frogs is ready and Coach sees them every day - why don’t we respect his decision making? Smdh.......

If a guy doesn't play well in practice, he's probably not playing in games. It's not rocket science. He likely has a lot of development to do.

The redshirt rule doesn't work this way, a program can change their minds on redshirting a kid at any time... The Epperson kid at Creighton didn't play at all until late January last season...

Grayson was always going to be a guy that needed time and was never counted on to be a rotation guy early. He will likely not see significant time this year unless there is an injury.

The only reason I brought this up was to suggest we should be using redshirting the way Nova and other schools have. If Carter isn't ready then let's redshirt him and still have him available for 4 years when he should be a lot stronger and bball smarter. I'm not suggesting coach is wrong not to play Carter just that if coach thinks he's not ready then let's sit him for a year and have him ready down the road when we will need him and LeBlanc to replace Govan.

Agreeing that Carter would have been a good red shirt candidate, but he has played and the only way now is a medical red shirt, which you don’t want to wish on anybody.
His limited play he seems like he could provide some usable minutes this year if there was foul issues upfront (Jesse, Trey, Leblanc) or injuries. He can get some boards and stretch with outside shooting. I hope his adjustment and improvement help him do well this season.

The idea of red shirting a guy who you think has potential to improve both skill wise and athletically with the extra year of just practice and strength and conditioning makes sense. With the team having 13 scholarships available you just can't give that many players meaningful playing time during the regular season. I think this years Hoya team is deeper with talent than in past years, but even with more talent it is obvious that it only makes sense to play 9, and possibly 10 guys, in a regular rotation. Trying to get more guys involved makes it hard for everyone to find a rhythm/role and get in to the flow of the games on a consistent basis.
It seems like the opportunity to red shirt Carter may not exist anymore but I could see it as a valuable tool for some players and the program.
