Hmm, the women teams that did the worst compared to their rankings were Stanford, Indiana, and Georgetown (tied with Yale and UVA). All three are coached by present and former Hoya coaches.

In the regional rankings the women fell from 3rd to 4th with Princeton moving ahead of them; now it is Penn State, Nova, Princeton, and the Hoyas.
In the men's ranking, even a poor race did not stop the Hoyas from maintaining their #1 status in the Mid-Atlantic. The big change will take place in the national rankings tomorrow. The Pre-Nats took place under hot and humid conditions in L'ville. Plus the team was tired from some tough workouts. They hope to bounce back in BE and Regionals.
One of the biggest changes in the regional rankings came in the West region where the University of Portland rose from 6th to 1st leaping over Stanford and Oregon in the process.

As expected the women fell in the national rankings, in fact they fell out of the top 30. Effectively they are #32 considering the number of votes they got. All GU coached teams fell in the women's voting except for NAU, whose women's team made the top 30 and who is coached by Mike Smith and Becca DeLoach. Stanford fell nine places and Indiana fell 15 places.

The men fell even more than the women, going from #19 to out of the top 30 and effectively being #33 by receiving 7 votes. The big winner was my 2nd favorite team the University of Portland, which went from #25 to #3.

Incidentally, in a weird ranking mixup, Penn State, who is 5th in the Mid-Atlantic region (where the Hoyas are first), came in at #30 in the national rankings ahead of the Hoyas' #33.

This week's regional rankings has the men #1 again in the region. Princeton, with their win at Heps, switches place with Penn for the 2 and 3 placings.
The women moved from 4th to 3rd in the region and Villanova switched places with Penn State with Nova's win at Big East and PSU's 4th place at Big Ten (or whatever they are calling the conference now).

In the national rankings the women went from receiving votes last week to a tie for 27th place. The men still remain just outside of the top 30, and they are the top team in receiving votes, essentially #31. Both men and women need to finish in the top two in the regional races next week. If the women do not finish in the top two, they do not have enough points to make an at-large team. I am not sure about the men. They do not have many points, so not finishing in the top two would leave them on the fence, and they would hope that some teams they beat make top two at regionals.

In the pre-NCAA XC poll, the women got some votes and that puts them essentially in #33, while the men did not receive any votes.

Great article about Jon! I was surprised that he may come back for another XC season, which would be great for the team. As far as the indoor/outdoor season, even though he is a 5000/10000m man, I think he may be able to break four minutes in the mile, as I think four others on the team might have a chance (Scott Carpenter, who has actually run under four for the mile on the anchor leg of the DMR team last year, but has not run an open sub-4 mile; Spencer Brown, who has run in the low fours, Amos Bartelsmeyer, who has broken 4 before; and Jack Salisbury, who had run 4:04 in high school. There are others, who might break 4 in subsequent years.
