Good post--shows how coaching can make the difference in college sports. Its part of a larger article on the improbable success of the Syracuse NCAA XC win/XC program. You should send the link to the Georgetown AD.

I hate to post this, but since it is about cross country and since it mentions Georgetown, well here we go: “I got to do what almost any distance coach in this country would like to do: have control of the scholarships and be told I want a great cross country program before I want anything else by the AD. We were given a really nice gift and it was up to us. Didn’t have any limitations put on us. … I don’t know that we ever thought we would really win a national championship, but we were going to coach like that, we were going to recruit like that, we were going to evolve that. We got made fun of a lot early on. We used to keep a list on these whiteboards of coaches that we really love and respect that told us, It can’t be done there. You cannot do it at Syracuse. You’re going up against ‘Nova, you’re going up against Georgetown, you’re going up against Providence. You’re going up against the East Coast establishment with a program that’s never done it.” – Syracuse University head coach Chris Fox talking about starting with a program that hadn’t made NCAAs in over 30 years and working up to becoming the 2015 NCAA champions. Fox is a good dude and I really respect him and grudgingly respect what he's done with the programs at Syracuse. That said, Edited CUSE!

Of course, our men's XC and track and field coach spent several years coaching at the dreaded cuse.

Men remain first in the regional voting, but the women have slipped to 3rd this week. Women are in action this weekend, men are still off.

In the national ranking this week, without running in a meet the women rose two places to #25, while the men fell from #15 to #16.

The women did well in the Battle in Beantown. There were three nationally ranked teams in the field: Provy, Indiana, and the Hoyas with Harvard receiving votes. Provy won by 7 points with a score of 71 with Indiana and the Hoyas having 78 points each. In the standings Indiana is listed as in 2nd place with the Hoyas 3rd. However, I don't know how they break the tie. Indiana had a better average time for the first five but the Hoyas had a better 6th women. Again, the Hoyas had a great spread of 21 seconds from the first to 5th runner. Also, two of our top four runners did not start - Madeline Perez and Paige Hofstad. 22 teams participated. Provy was ranked 7th, Indiana 18th, and the Hoyas 25th. I see the Hoyas moving up this week.

The Hoyas are having great spreads so far this season. Unfortunately, the women do not have a low point scorer, which helps especially in championship meets. Maybe Paige Hofstad, who didn't run today would provide that runner. I don't know if Kennedy Weisner is sitting out the XC season, because she would probably be a low stick. We were expecting Martha MacDonald to be up in the top five Hoya runners, but she is a freshman and this was her first race. Margie and Maegan, sophomores did very well, and I was pleased with Josette's running.

In the regional rankings this week, nothing has changed from last week with the women 3rd and the men 1st. Most of the regional teams will be at the Paul Short meet this weekend.

No changes for the Hoyas in the regional rankings. The men continue to lead the Mid-Atlantic region, while the women remain in 3rd place. Villanova and Penn State switched places with Nova #1 and PSU #2.

In the National polls The women moved up one place to #22; ironic, since they didn't run as a team last weekend. The men, on the other hand, fell two places to #19, even though they finished 2nd in the Paul Short meet. The Utah teams fared the best in the polls this week. Utah State, who won the Short race went up effectively 14 places; BYU went up four places, and Southern Utah went up seven places.

No updated regional or national polls this week. But next week should be big because of two major XC meets. The men will go to Louisville for the Pre-National meet, which brings out top teams, and the women will go to Wisconsin, which has developed into a big meet also and has many top teams.

Well, the women ran very poorly at Wisconsin today finishing 19th. To add insult to injury the unranked Syracuse women beat them. All those teams above the Hoyas in the rankings beat them plus five unranked teams also beat them. Expect the women will fall out of the rankings. Also, if the Hoyas do not finish in the top two at regionals, I don't think they will make the NCAAs again this year.

Autumn was the last runner over the line. And no appearance of Paige Hofstad, who I was counting on to be our top runner. And, of course, having Audrey Belf transfer doesn't help.

On the positive side in the men's race at Wisconsin #25 University of Portland beat #3 Syracuse. Portland finished 2nd, Syracuse 3rd. The winner was Northern Arizona coached by Hoya grad and former Hoya coach Mike Smith.

From letsrun.com
Quick Take #3: Biggest Losers (team) — A number of ranked women’s teams struggled including #5 Stanford
The following chart shows you the biggest winners and losers of the ranked teams. Seed Team (National Rank) Place Diff 1 New Mexico (#3) 1 0 2 Stanford (#5) 8 +6 3 San Fran (#6) 2 -1 4 NC State (#7) 3 -1 5 Providence (#8) 5 0 6 Washington (#11) 7 +1 7 Boise St. (#13) 4 -3 8 Indiana (#14) 17 +9 9 Wisconsin (#17) 9 0 10 Iowa St. (#18) 13 3 11 Minnesota (#20) 10 -1 12 Furman (#21) 6 -6 13 Utah (#22) 16 3 14 Georgetown (#22) 19 +5 15 Yale (#27) 20 +5 16 UVA (#28) 21 +5 There were 16 ranked teams in the women’s field and five of them finished at least five spots lower than their ranking led (in the wrong direction) by the 5th-ranked Stanford. Stanford had the 2nd-highest ranking of any team in the field but only ended up 8th. Three of the seven fastest US high school 1500 runners of all time (Christina Aragon 4:08.71, Elise Cranny 4:10.95, Ella Donaghu 4:14.11) are all at Stanford right now but only Donaghu, who was 100th at NCAAs last year, raced on Friday and she was only 120th. Stanford was also missing Courtney Smith (32:08 10k) from its roster today. Other ranked teams that didn’t do as well as their ranking were #14 Indiana – the 8th-highest ranked team – which was just 17th. #22 Georgetown, #27 Yale and #28 UVA – the 14th-, 15th-, and 16th-best teams on paper all finished five spots worse than that, in 19th, 20th and 21st.
