We match up very well against Marquette, who steadfastly refuse to turtle - and we make them pay for it. Rachel really finding the magic touch with those free kicks!

And the beat goes on....The match up with Marquette went on as expected....We have owned that school for the last two years...
And now three sleepless nights for Coach Nolan....Butler is not necessarily a good soccer side...Matter of fact, quite a boring one, excepting tonights big offensive win versus Providence....But that is not the problem...They will bunker in on defense and do everything to foil Coach Nolan's offensive schemes with the most somnolent soccer one can watch. Six back, eight back, whatever it takes, but do not allow those Hoya crosses and corners to materialize...Take the game to the limit...Then go two OTs and hope to slip out of DC with a PK win----the most boring of soccer....But lest I be criticized like Hope Solo against the Swedes, let me just say our offense must kick in early, kick in hard, take it to the net, and step up from the get go. Otherwise, Butler, who prides itself with the least goals against in the NCAA will hang around in an opportunistic ritual. Our rival is really not that good, but an enigma to our style of play....
Regardless, the reigning Final Four team from last year, probably secured home field advantage and an NCAA berth for at least two or so games. But let us go in with a clean sheet. The regular season game against Butler was not pretty. But too, this is on grass, not on turf. This is at Shaw, not in Indy.
Strategize, prepare, and come with guns a blazin' Hoyas...

Yeah, we match up really well against Marquette, since they refuse to Butler...I mean bunker. As for the Bulldogs, remarkable how they've changed in the span of a single season. Nowhere near the outfit we outscored 9-0 last season. Agree that the Hoyas need to take it right at Butler. Go for crosses and corners, yes, but attack directly up the middle as well. Build out the back...and try to some bombs over the top. Mix it up. I get the sense that Butler has psyched a lot of teams out this season, lulling them into stalemates that let the Bulldogs make it through the Big East season (and most of their non-conference slate) undefeated. No thank you. We have the horses - let's run them ragged. If they're going to grind out a draw and send this to PKs, let's make them damn well earn it.

We do have power in the center. You know that Ferrell's corner runs and crosses will be well known. I would like to see her turn to the middle a bit more and run a double tap triangulated play to Germino-W and Carolan. Just shake up the cookie jar a bit. Get Butler uncomfortable. Show some new stuff. I have seen a couple of very nicely carried out plays to the middle this year. Bring it.
Another nice touch would be that we tend to pack either the right side or left side of the field even as we attack. Yesterday, Livingstone snuck in strongly from the weak side beyond the far post and drove a sharp header off the turf into the goal. More plays from the weak side, especially on corner kicks where roughly 25% of the kicks are either through balls or over kicks. A player 10 yards deep on the far post could cherry pick same.
But most of all, get to them early and bring them out of their defensive posture.

It appeared that one of the girls had a cast on her hand/wrist in yesterday's game. I didn't know that was permissible. What are the rules?

HoyaSinceBirth: I know that is the ruling in Club Soccer (at the discretion of the referee at each game---in other words different refs could have a different opinion of safety and rule accordingly). Is that the same with NCAA women's and men's soccer?
BTW, let me congratulate the entire Hoya Nation for the appointment of one of their own to being the new Fed Chief---J. Powell

I can not speak for the women’s game but Josh Yaro played the end of his freshman season with a giant pink cast on his fractured arm. It was heavily padded and thus permissible.

Powell www1.arbitersports.com/Groups/106254/Library/files/Rules%20Differences%20-%20Soccer.pdfI quoted the NCAA soccer rule. HS: "Hard casts or splints must be padded with closed cell foam at least ½ “ thick.. Facemask may be worn by player with facial injury. It must be molded to the face with no protrusions; player must have a medical release at the game site signed by a physician for use of the mask. Metal ankle brace must be under stockings, non-metal may be over stockings." FIFA - USSF "Referee’s discretion – check for safety and require padding if cast is hard or dangerous. Soft facemasks now permitted if referee feels they are not dangerous."

Thanks for the ruling. It seems pretty black and white. With all the years of club soccer, I saw instances where a player was allowed by one ref to play in a game with soft cushioning to a cast, and then the next week not allowed same. This looks pretty black and white. Thanks

Grabbed a 1-0 early lead from a beautiful header off a free kick. Butler has to open up in the second half, hopefully we stay aggressive and can put it out of reach.

Shut down the conference offensive player of the year. Dominated every aspect. Easy 3-0 win. Big East Tournament champs! HOYA SAXA!

Dominant performance. Butler never even threatened. Coming into the game Butler had only allowed 4 goals. We almost doubled that today. Butler has one move and had no answers when their plan failed.

So, uhh, I have absolutely no idea what to make of that game. I was fully expecting a hard-nosed, grind-it-out contest, especially given the weather conditions. Instead, Butler played like they spent all of yesterday celebrating Georgetown Homecoming. Seriously, that might've been the worst 13-1 team in recorded history, judging by that performance.
There's just something unbelievable about us being up 2-0 late in the game and still looking way more offensive-minded and committed to the attack. The Bulldogs co-head coaching tandem should've just handed over their Coaching Staff of the Year trophies to Dave Nolan after the game.
Ok, enough Butler-bashing (seriously, though, yikes, what an embarrassing performance). Congratulations Hoyas! You are now the most decorated team in the program's history, and it is absolutely well-deserved. You grew and improved over the course of the season and turned in two of your finest performances when the chips were down. Never lost focus. Never lost composure. Never lost trust in each other. A team full of outstanding individual talents who nonetheless play unselfish, team-first soccer.
The silver anniversary edition of the Hoyas may well go down as being the best one yet!

There is little mystery to Butler. They play extreme defensive soccer and will stay that way for the full game taking a tie as opposed to a loss. They rarely come out of their defensive scheme. Today, with an early strike by G'town, they still held back. You could see them still bunkering in on D and trying to force a long ball forward for a quick counter. You would think they were tied or ahead for most of the first half. Then when the second goal went in early in half two, they had to come out on offense, and whoops, there was no offense there. G'town was peppering their goal all day long, but especially after they decided losing 0-1 wasn't going to work.
Butler is not a horrible side, but one that is maybe a year away. The announcers were talking early how they were like the second coming of sliced bread, which they certainly showed they were not. They are but a well coached and oiled defensive side.
On the other hand, G'town not only played very nice D when they occasionally had to, but they linked passes, made great moves, went first to the ball, connected and collected passes very well. It was a very good exhibition of one sided soccer. Butler looked like they just did not show. And then their German team goalie coming out too far on a clearing maneuver that went awry, allowing Rachel to lob a beautiful goal over her desperate head as she was racing back to the goal. Nice soccer Hoyas. Great win.

Congrats to the ladies! Think they will almost certainly play at home as at least a 2 seed now. Would be hard to deny this team that privilege.
