Patrick Ewing, Georgetown Hoyas Greatest challenge: Everything Can Patrick Ewing coach? We don't know the answer to that question yet. He has been an assistant and associate head coach in the NBA. He clearly knows the game. But the situation at Georgetown will demand a more holistic effort. But he's Patrick Ewing. And being Patrick Ewing on the Georgetown campus will buy him a lot of time as the leader of a program coming off a 14-win season. Yet he has to deal with new challenges. He has to make sure his players handle their lives on the court and in the classroom. He has to deal with recruiting. Parents, boosters, alumni, administrators and AAU coaches will all want his time. Oh, and he has to guide his program through the gauntlet known as the Big East. For now, he just has to show the college basketball world that he's a capable head coach who can handle his new responsibilities -- because the homecoming tour, and the pageantry that comes with it, will eventually end. Just ask the son of Georgetown coaching legend John Thompson Jr. At some point this season, we'll find out if Ewing can coach this program and begin to lead the Hoyas back to viability. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/19388870/biggest-questions-facing-indiana-archie-miller-georgetown-patrick-ewing-others

That's quite the hot take... YAWN My thought exactly. He's basically saying that Ewing has to coach. You could really write the same article on anybody without college head coaching experience. And I would actually argue that at least our record this season is unlikely to be indicative of Ewing's coaching abilities. The cupboard is pretty bare, so it's possible Ewing could be the greatest coach in the world and still have a bad record. Considering we don't even know exactly what our roster will be on opening day next season, it's way too early for predictions.

One might have at least wished for a specific mention of hoyatalk.

I think that one has been answered.

I continue to be very upset about the negativity towards Pat. Do we really think that the lead for any other former NBA player who had coached in the league for 15 years would be "Can he Coach?" If he couldn't coach would he have had a job all these years? Can he adjust to the college game-fair question. Maybe I am wrong but this strikes me as having a negative racial tone to it. Hopefully I am wrong (yes i am an old white guy)....

Perhaps not racial, but certainly very negative for no apparent reason. But really it is just fluff, and very bad fluff at that.

From Goodman, to Jayson Williams, to this article by Medcalf. Not sure what it is but definitely a high level of Disrespect! I could be wrong but I don't remember Mullin getting treated like this when he took over St. John's and he had no coaching experience whatsoever. Here you have Ewing who's grinded for 15 years to get to an opportunity and has been attacked and has his coaching intelligence challenged without any merit behind the attacks. Somewhat reminds me of when he was a player for Georgetown and some of the the attacks he took then.

Hopefully I am wrong (yes i am an old white guy).... There is a lot of media skepticism that being a pro assistant coach is somehow a seamless transition to college (see "Weis, Charlie"). Closer to basketball, Mark Price (27-36) hasn't set Conference USA on fire, nor has Avery Johnson at Alabama (37-30) or Danny Manning at Wake Forest (43-52), much less Chris Mullin's continued slog at St. John's. The work of an NBA assistant is wholly unlike that of a college HC and that's a legitimate concern. Some that may be quick to call out a reporter for being biased need to take a different view --if UCLA suddenly hired Kiki Vandeweghe as its head coach, how many would be openly questioning the move? The good news is that if Ewing succeeds, he'll get all the credit.
