How do we know Pat wouldn't select Ronnie, I'm sure he more or less grew up with him and has a close relationship. The Thompson Era is not over and will not be as long as JT Jr is alive, like it or not (personally I don't but I'm a realist). Yes Ronnie was working out recruits before we had a staff because we had no one else too..would you prefer it was young assistants PEJr and Wallace? True his role will involve more then scheduling but he won't have a direct impact on the players. Like others have noticed, he always had poignant observations when calling our games, he's in touch with the current game, and is comfortable with Georgetowns AD and administration. If this hire didn't have the name Thompson at the end, no one would give a flying f who it was. His name probably won't be listed on the mens basketball page, this is an athletic department hire. He isnt a coach in any manner so previous coach foibles dont apply. Clearly relationships helped him get the job but the same could be said about 75% of employees at any company. He'll bring broadcasting experience and connections with TV execs to the table on top of his intimate knowledge of how the administration wants the program run by the AD.

I agree with some of this, but you've taken the strongest objection and dismissed it in about 20 words. His name is Thompson and that's precisely the reason people give a flying f. And am I correct? Was this position created for him?

His name probably won't be listed on the mens basketball page, this is an athletic department hire. Really? Here are the open positions in the Athletic Department as listed this week online: Equipment Manager – Hoya Athletics Associate Athletic Director for Sport Administration and Varsity Sports Associate Director, Annual Fund for Georgetown Athletics, Hoyas Unlimited (two positions open) Ronny is not coming to GU set up shoulder pads and helmets before games. He does not have the experience to be an associate athletic director for other sports, and is not sending out fundraising e-mails for Hoyas Unlimited. He'll be at practice, and it's likely we'll see him on the bench. My guess, with no inside info: "Special Assistant To The Head Coach."

350 but I only went to one of them. Georgetown basketball is Georgetown basketball. The jerseys do not read "Thompson". It is time to accept that that era is over. Until that is recognized we will be mediocre at best. And the other 349 had no place for Fredo... And there you have it...

I agree with this. The bar is so low. Me personally, I want to see 4 things (in no particular order): 1) An enjoyable style of basketball to watch. 2) Kids playing hard for 40 minutes. 3) Coaches holding players accountable for lack of effort, poor play, etc. 4) Steady improvement, both individually and as a team, over the course of the season. I don't care what our record is or who we beat. I'll be thrilled if we exceed expectations but I won't be upset if this season is as bad as many of us think it will be. As long as I feel we've met those 4 expectations, I'll consider the season successful. I would add one more thing to your list although yours are clearly all about the on-court focus. Mine would be 5) some success in recruiting. 1, 2, 3, & 4 were all missing the past two years. Yea I definitely agree here. I was focusing mostly on on-court goals but the recruiting needs to improve as well

Without knowing what RT's job will be and what his duties are, I find it hard to judge the wisdom of the hire. If it is a position he is qualified for then it is Ewing's call and we move forward hoping for the best, just like with his other hires. I do not think that bloodlines should be the basis for making or opposing any hire. I was not enthusiastic about the Ewing hire because he has no head coaching experience and no college coaching experience. Could not care less that he might have been Big John's choice. There are many reasons to be dissatisfied with the Athletic Department, its seeming indifference to the fans and the non-basketball programs, without having to apply the "Thompson connection" test to each move. Unless someone here knows the duties of the position, how can anyone say whether Ron T is unqualified? Admittedly, the hiring is a case of poor optics, particularly when combined with the hiring of another Thompson "family" member as the head coach. But then, when has the Athletic Department ever worried about poor optics.

No need for lengthy arguments.
Hiring RT in any capacity right now (or whenever it actually happened) is a bad idea.

You're right, he could take the special assistant to the coach role, in which case I'll be disappointed. As mentioned elsewhere, it's not worth pining about until we know the actual role. If it is that role, I hope the contract is performance based for a single year, then Pat can fill the position after he has a better feel for the college game.

I just wish we hadn't been sold a bag of BS when it came to a "national coaching search". Just feels like this school and program treats its fans like we don't have cognitive abilities.

I understand the frustration with the level of influence that Big John has over the basketball program. I also agree with those who note that the end of his coaching tenure was marked by indifference and burnout. I was opposed to the Ewing hire from the outset, along with a handful of others here, like BamaHoya and hoyasaxa2003. My opposition came from his lack of head coaching experience and college coaching experience, not the fact that Big John mentored him. Now, I am hoping and praying that this all works out.
I wanted JT III to be removed--not because of his ties to his father, but because as a basketball coach he was in many ways the antithesis of his father. I wanted him to value the style of play that the Hoyas played under his father during the magical years, as opposed to methodical "Princeton" style he brought to the program. I wanted to see the bravado that has been missing on the court for too long. I missed the fire on the sideline, and was never comfortable with the stoic, calm presence that seemed incapable of motivating players during the past few years. Like others I worried about the influence of the father over the Athletic Department, but even if the decision to fire JT III was painfully slow and late and perhaps forced upon the Athletic Department, it did happen. Honestly, who really gives a damn if Ronnie Thompson is on the staff. Yes the optics are bad, but that started with the coaching search that led to hiring an inexperienced head coach. I understand the fear that nothing has changed and the program has simply changed one puppet without changing the master puppeteer. Only time will tell, but if Ewing brings a style of play and a swagger that is reminiscent of his mentor I doubt if anyone is going to care if Ronnie Thompson is a part of the basketball team. Let's take a breath and give it some time to play out.

A bad message to whom? Let's take a season or at least several games to judge, otherwise its pure speculation. If you attended Georgetown University, I'm sure you received a fine education. Meanwhile hopefully we get one or two new recruits....Coach Ewing is out on the road grinding....recruiting...isn't that what the many howling voices were insisting was important. These are truly the dog days of summer.

The top teams in this conference all have great infrastructure which supports the HC, why is it unreasonable to expect or want that @ Gtown? Folks should read Russky's post in the S&C thread, its pretty enlightening..

Agree and they also have institutional memory. We need at least one big bang to redirect the mindset of many posters...some good news! LOL!

I would have much rathered they hired someone like Jerome Williams if we needed to "keep it in the family." At least he brings something to the table. Honestly, what does RT bring to this staff? Can anyone provide an actual answer to this question?

Ron is a loyal Georgetown alumnus and former player, a smart basketball guy who has played, coached and done broadcasting/analysis for both college and NBA games...he's a personable guy and a good communicator, has a beautiful family and PE is comfortable with him and thinks he can be an asset to the program...most of this vitriol and venom directed at him and the name Thompson is, in my opinion, grossly unfair, mean spirited and classless...my role, as I view it (and I've been around since just prior to Big John's hiring), is to provide as much support and encouragement to our new staff as I possibly can at this pivotal starting point in getting things turned back around to being the Georgetown basketball that we all want to see.

While I absolutely support nice guys with beautiful families, this hiring seems desperate. Could we really not attract anyone else for this "position" besides a Thompson? We need fresh thinking and considering RT hasn't had a job coaching in some time, I doubt he was up for any other similar positions at another school. Simply put, we can do better and if there's any chance of rebuilding this program, we must strive to absolutely do better - - with coaching, players, recruiting, facilities, marketing, etc.

Mullins hired Mitch Richmond as his "assistant to the HC" when he got to St. John's.. According to the article below Richmond's duties were to " assist the staff with team activities, plan practice and analyze film. He will travel with the team." Mullins 3rd AC hire Greg St. Jean also had NBA experience.. www.nytimes.com/2015/10/07/sports/ncaabasketball/chris-mullin-hires-mitch-richmond-as-st-johns-assistant.html?_r=0

If Ronny's got a class of 2018-20 son who's a 4 star or more, this is a good hire.
