I thought my statement was pretty concise, but here we are... Current roster = '17-'18 roster (http://www.guhoyas.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/gu-m-baskbl-mtt.html) Brase is a 4/5 who likes to shoot -- not particularly well. He was never a great athlete and is now coming off 2 consecutive ACL injuries. Our "current" 4/5s (Govan, Derrickson, Agau, Mourning) and 3/4s (Kaleb, Walker) should be able to play 80 combined minutes at the 4 & 5 spots, with George M. mopping up. Even if we lost one of those four 4/5s to transfer or injury... I'd still rather piece together the PF/C minutes from the remaining 5 guys than bring in a marginal talent just to eat minutes and give us more of what we already have in spades (Bigs who aren't afraid to chuck). More mediocre minutes from our PF & C are what we're trying to pare off the roster, not add to it. If we lost 2 guys, though - my original comment - we would simply need warm bodies. Which I think is about all we could expect this kid to be. Well....there's the question of Agau... Looks like that's getting answered.

I have absolutely no interest in Brase or Atewe. I realize at this point beggars can't be choosers and I will even put their production or lack of aside....but if we are looking to add guys like that for frontcourt depth i would not pursue 2 players that have significant injury history.
Sorry but that is the piece that turns me off those 2 in particular.

With Akoy gone we could use an extra big with some experience. A 5th year guy can't really hurt us; I presume we do our due diligence before bringing in one with an injury history.

Waters, Carter, Sodom! Gives the roster balance and the ability to grow going forward. Ewing is trying to grow a program. Bringing in a 5th year or multiple 5th year players is not the way to grow and develop a program. Bringing in an all freshman class would allow for continuity and growth. 5th year free agent is more of a stop gap. If Ewing uses all 3 schollys remaining, he would have 4 for 2018 class if no one leaves. Also would allow Ewing to get a better feel for what the program needs after his first season. Nothing is expected next season except for being able to show a direction via style of play that Ewing wants to take the program...JMO Carter is a 2018, so he would not be here in the fall anyways. I think most of us would prefer a stud class of frosh who would grow into the team, but it would seem to me that the focus on grad transfers is a recognition that those ideal players may not all come here, but Ewing still needs to put something resembling a competitive team out there for the 2017-18 season. If that means bringing in a couple rental players, then so be it. Then make sure that 2018 is a solid, well balanced class that truly begins the Ewing era. Get the experienced transfers to help immediately. We already have two frosh coming in, and maybe 3 with Waters. Jesse, Marcus and the other players who stuck around deserve a shot at the Tournament next year and then build the roster with more time and a complete staff. Of course, if one of the hs senior studs wants to come here, take him. Here's the latest list: www.espn.com/college-sports/basketball/recruiting/playerrankingsLa Bamba!

EDIT--looking at Carter recruiting thread, who the hell knows what class he is in. In terms of Carter, from everything I've read and been told, he would prefer to be in the 17 class and will do so if he finds the right fit. Otherwise he will go prep and go into the 18 class. My comment was referencing some above comments that were stating the desire of bringing in multiple 5th year free agent transfers. There are still some talented high school kids available that we are involved with like Water (I hope we are still in on), 7'3" BigMan Yannick Sodom and Carter. Just stating to prioritize them over multiple 5th year transfers if possible. I absolutely except PE to bring in one 5th year transfer. If he has to bring 2-3 5th year free agents, then he will have massive class in balance and be looking at having as much as 7 schollys to fill in the 18 class.

With Agau transferring, someone said we are at 9 scholarships for next year. Even if we are exceedingly fortunate to pick up two of Waters, Sodom, and Carter (of which I have heard nothing to indicate we are leading for any of them), we would still have two scholarships left over for 5th year rentals. Might as well fill them.

Lots of good names on the ESPN list. Plenty of options to fill out the roster, maintain some form of class balance and room for future stars

Looks like he's maybe a PG? At worst it is neutral for us, at best it is great.
