Another classic for the vault today. I missed some of the NFC championship game to watch that which is regrettable but my fault as it was very predictable. Can't imagine many tuned in for this CBS game today other than Xavier faithful and those remaining diehards on this board that see our bright future right around the corner. Some of the eternal optimists masochists here were watching too, this one included. We are the last of a dying breed - Hoya fans who actually believe life will go on without the Thompson family or its designee (Esherick) running the program. Just remember we could always become DePaul if we were to try to right this ship. The brilliance of this board's messaging continues to amaze people with any common sense.

Zo!!!! How do you put up with the fact that someone doesn't think your son doesn't deserve a chance on a team that 1-6 in the BE!!!!! How many high majors offered his son? Can't expect too much. Duke & Florida

Haha- not exactly! And I think the family fortune is intact regardless of anything we are discussing on this board.

We had better get some high shooting guards in here real quick.

This team beat Oregon. They have consistently played evenly against top flight competition but falter at the end of the game. For the life of me I don't get the extremes on this board. This team does not have elite talent. But it isn't the least talented team in the Big East. And we are now in the bottom of the league standings. I sat here on this board for several years when we were struggling and listed to all the "talent" we were bringing in. That talent is now the junior class. We aren't developing a cohesive basketball team with our players. Should we try to get better players? Sure. But we have major conference talent. At least as good as Houston, and Auburn, and Georgia, and a bunch of the other random teams that are currently on the NCAA bubble. Dillon Brooks hardly played that game and was returning from injury. Hayes and Derrickson also missed the game, fwiw.

BTW, who is paying these announcers? I guess Fox has to hype our program for ratings but anyone watching this game who could agree with them that the Hoyas can make a run this year is dreaming. Except the game was on CBS... Wrong network but right idea. CBS and CBSSN will be broadcasting several BE games and I'm sure they don't want to denigrate the product they will be putting out. Listening to the announcers even I started to think that maybe we could "make a run in the BE" as they kept saying. Also they kept referring to the 2011 team that went 1-4 to open the BE and then went on a run. Hello? That team had Otto, Whit, Starks, Clarke etc. I would trade anyone on this team for one of those guys. Especially the guards.

I don't think it really has anything to do with hyping or not denigrating the league. I just think they're trying to make that specific game as interesting as they can to an audience. The obvious angle is "hey, viewer, their record stinks, but they're actually pretty good, and you want to watch this game because if they do win this game, that could turn the whole ship around." I don't think that's rocket science. Xavier is sixth nationally in terms of opposing teams' rebounding, so it's certainly not surprising we didn't get a lot, given our own struggles there. Going inside to our two centers early certainly seemed to be a sound strategy in a vacuum, but Brad just isn't making anything right now, and neither of them would know a power post move if it drop-stepped on their forehead. So, they're tough to rely on. I suppose I'd rather see us go inside to Marcus to start games if we're going to try to play inside-out.

Other big differences - the 2011 team was 11-1 in the out of conference schedule with wins against a bunch of decent top 100 teams. Also, we started 1-4 in that season, but the teams that beat us were Notre Dame (ranked 12 on KenPom), St. John's (41), West Virginia (19), and Pittsburgh (4). So, yes, we started badly, but we lost to three great teams and one pretty good team. That team didn't have Otto Porter, but it had Austin Freeman, Chris Wright, Jason Clark, Hollis Thompson, Julian Vaughn, an improved Junior Henry Sims, and able backups in Lubick, Vee Sanford, and Starks. That team had a lot of guys who could put the ball in the basket and really only fell apart once Chris Wright hurt his wrist.

Does anyone know:
1. Why Kaleb played 13 minutes in our previous game and only 3 yesterday? I'm not saying he would've been the difference maker, but at least you're building a player's game and confidence by playing him around the same minutes every game. He knows what to expect from one game to the other, instead of expecting inconsistency.
2. Why Jagan starts the half-court with the PrinceTown spinning move while the closest opponent is about 5 ft. away? Is that taught by JT3? Can you see Waters doing it?
3. Why we went away from "everybody rebounding together instead of running out before grabbing the rebound" that had worked so well in our last two games?

I like Kaleb but he simply is an offensive liability at this point in time. He is one of our better defenders, but not a good defender yet. His problem is inexperience and in that regard I agree with your suggestion. However, to the credit of Reggie, he played well yesterday on both ends of the court and deserved playing time. I do like the offense/defense substitution with the two at the end of the game and it needs to be done more. They both need to play, particularly when MD appears incapable of not fouling underneath the basket. Prefer either at the 4 to any of the 3 post players moving over to the 4,particularly against the smaller teams that have been "out-quicking" Govan, Hayes and Agau.

Where do we stand in terms of fouls committed per game?

Where do we stand in terms of fouls committed per game? Not good. 273rd nationally since the start of the season and dead last in the BE. Currently in the BE we are fouling at basically the exact same rate we did in conference play last year.
