Miller had a substance problem. Butler and Xavier both have had to hire coaches a lot more then we have over the years and they clearly have a system in place to hire good people. We don't. That's good stuff but we don't even know if we have a good system in place because we don't even try. When did we last run a coaching search DFW? It wasn't in most of this board's lifetime. 2004 www.thehoya.com/a-thompson-reigns-again/The coaching search at Georgetown was led by James Higgins (GSB ’70), a member of the Board of Trustees and a former captain of the basketball team, and Athletic Director Emeritus Frank Rienzo. University President John J. DeGioia said Georgetown would undertake a national search immediately after Esherick’s firing on March 16. It was never confirmed, however, that several other rumored candidates, including Duke Assistant Coach Johnny Dawkins, Penn Head Coach Fran Dunphy and Georgetown Assistant Coach Jaren Jackson, were interviewed, and Jackson and Dunphy both told THE HOYA they had not spoken to Higgins.

Exactly right. It hasn't been done since maybe early 70's?

On the last play of the game the Hall of Crap coach has Hayes and Kaleb on the game, it is completely ridiculous. Neither can shoot free throws. Agree but I actually think having Brad in on the defensive possession before was a worse coaching decision. A pick and roll was so blatantly obvious and it left a guard on their center who easily gets the rebound and is fouled Couldn't agree more. I turn to my brother and said "why the heck is Akoy not checking into this game?" Then you can switch everything. Instead we don't switch and we have two guys run to the ball and leave Fowler wide open

JTIII is a good coach. Need good players; Need athletic defensive bigs to go with the recruits who came / are coming in. There seems to be NO instinctive players on the team, just guys with enough skill to play D1. If you have an instinctive PG and instinctive C, you have a real good chance "up here." Perhaps the defensive scheme should be overhauled? I mean how many open shots or drive to the rim is this team going to give up. I watched time and time again NO HELP DEFENSE. Where's the monster on this team? "Need good players"? That's the coach's job. He brings in the players. This isn't the MLB, NBA, NFL or NHL where the GM is responsible for the talent on the team. JT3 brought these players here. He's the one that gave a scholarship to Cameron instead of Josh Hart (who wanted to be a Hoya). The lack of talent is on JT3. He has failed. ...And then doesn't play Cameron... I see your point but i disagree in this case; he needs more talent.

Anger and ramblings while waiting to fly back to SoCal. Poor rebounding, missed box outs, missed assignments, horrible decisions by some of the players down the stretch and now poor FT shooting. I just don't know how to explain the sense of inevitability that was in the Verizon Center in the last half and overtime. I know JT III can coach--he's done it before. He just does not seem to be able to coach this team. The same has been true in 2 of the past 3 seasons. Remember when we used an offense /defense substitution to make sure we had our best kids out there? Today we have a 30% and 40% FT shooter on the floor down the stretch. Predictably they go 0-4 from the FT line. Final thought-- I hope that Alonzo Mourning is a better man than me because nothing seems more insulting than putting his kid out there with less than 30 seconds to go. If he was clearing the bench then Cameron would have gone in too. If somehow watching Trey in garbage time of another meltdown is considered a positive to the parent then I must be very different than the Mournings. Pretty good and balanced evaluation. Agree with you on pretty much everything you said. Especially the point regarding Alonzo and Trey Mourning. I have no idea what III was thinking their. Made no sense. I don't know how you go from playing well in quality minutes against top 15 teams in Duke and Providence last year to not even getting a sniff this year. Even after 2 players at his true position transfers out of the school. In actuality if JT3 is going to continue to defend the 1/5 or 1/4 pick and roll by switching the bigs on to the guard he would be better off playing a combination of Agau, Derrickson and Mourning because they are at the very least way more mobile then Hayes and Govan and can at least challenge the guard coming off the screen. Derrickson was very good today in that aspect. Hayes was okay at times today. Was pretty good the last 4 minutes except on the 3 pointer by Fowler that tied the game up at 66. Truth be told that was Peak's rotation but he was hesitant which leads me to believe that either Hayes or Mosely (more than likely Mosely) were confused on how the team was defending the pick. Seems to me it was supposed to be a straight switch. If it wasn't a straight switch and was a double on the ball, that would have been Peaks defensive rotation and I don't think you would have the hesitation from him. If that was Mosely mistake it was his only. What III likes to do is allow the players to communicate with each other whether they are switching or fighting through the picks. I don't like that because it leads to several late calls for the switch and leaves the rest of the defenders in no mans land and several defensive rotation mistake. I counted at least 8 times today where the communications for a switch were late and helpside was misplayed all together leading to late rotations and open shots by Butler. I think that needs to be a call from the bench and you either fight over top/through the pick or switch automatically. I think Mourning can help. In fact I think both he and Hayes should start. Switching should be minimized and more of a focus on Zone. Not sure why Hayes isn't allowed to face the basket and shoot and make layups. Does it always have to be back down...back down...back down...jump hook?

Positives from the Butler game:
1. Mosely. Don't know whether he will be able to repeat his performance anytime later this year but he let us in on his potential. Also, he is intense with some Trawick in him. I don't think he is going to sit by mildly and hand the PG post to Waters. 2. Defense. Not yet a good defense but improved over prior games. Press didn't look too bad either. 3. Player combos. Since our main weakness is defense (and rebounding), I thought the player combo of Peak, Mosely, Johnson and whoever is the best defensive combo we have used this year. 4. Coach. Though I don't understand coach's decisions to have Johnson and Hayes in the game during free-throw time and to take Johnson out in OT, I thought his decision to stick with the combo stated above was a definite positive. 5. Peak. Continues to be Mr. Dependable. 6. Derrickson. Coming along nicely.

In would have to agree with Dreamhoya's analysis above. We keep underestimating the power of this league. We need more athletic players, more mobile centers, more deadly shooting from three. I'm pretty sure dreamhoya was trolling and if not he really is dreaming. We lost in OT.

Supposedly the JTIII hire was a national search but I would be interested to know how many guys got a look. I am guessing it was just one.

So...weirdly, I stumbled upon this article over the weekend...first time I'd ever seen/heard of it before. It's a readout from a presentation Frank Rienzo gave at John Carroll Weekend in 2004, right after we hired JT3, and it pretty comprehensively covers GU's approach to that coaching search, if not who we actually spoke to: www.guhoyas.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/042804aaa.html

First time on the board since Friday. There were a lot of positives in this game. Mosley for sure. And we showed a lot of fight, at least up until the OT. Who would have thought we would be in a position to win with Pryor going scoreless? And then the old defensive rebounding bugaboo bit us in the behind again. We get that one rebound, we probably win. And why are Kaleb and Hayes such bad free throw shooters? Kaleb particularly. I don't understand how he could be so bad. Maybe he's good in practice and just misses them in games. Those two misses late in regulation were devastating.
But at the end of the day, it's just another loss.
