The men will start in box 28 (of 41). Don't know whether that is good or bad. Usually in a race like this the team probably wants to get out fast. No word on who is running this year. If we had Jon Green and Darren Fahy, we would be looking at a potential podium finish. As is, maybe a top 15. We are ranked 20th, but on a good day I think we are better than that. Scott Carpenter might go out in the lead pack trying to pick up a low finish (as far as placement) for the Hoyas. Northern Arizona is favored; this is the team Coach Smith left us for. Three of the teams are coached by Georgetown alumni - Stanford, NAU (actually Smith takes over next year), and the Hoyas.

Looks like a windy and rainy day in Indiana tomorrow. Probably a slow race, because if the weather is like this, nobody will want to take it out hard. The pack will probably stay crowded until the last mile.

Nine minutes into the race and Scott Carpenter and Mike Clevenger are running 34th and 35th, but only one or two seconds behind the leaders.

At 15:17 into the race Scott moved up to 27th, only 0.8 s behind the leader, while Mike fell to 55th, but only 1.5 s behind the leader. The rest of the Hoyas are pretty far back: 182.Mike Lederhouse 15:37, 217. Christian Alvarado 15:43.9, 218. Van Scoter 15:44.1, 239. Bouthillette 15:54.7, 240. Spenser Brown 15:55.

Meanwhile over in the women's race, Oregon won by one point over Michigan and Hoya alumna Sam Nadel finished 21st, and I believe she was the key to Oregon's victory.

The winner of the race comes from the Big East and Middle Atlantic region, Pat Tiernan of Villanova (and Australia). He upset Edward Cheserek, who was going for an unprecedent 4th NCAA XC title. Knight of the dreaded Cuse finished 2nd. NAU won the team title. Stanford came in 2nd; so Hoya coaches all over the leaderboard.

The Hoyas finished 21st, a letdown from last year, but right about where they were ranked coming in.

Scott Carpenter finished 8th in the team scoring, but I will have to find out where he finished among all the runners. At least one individual finished ahead of him (Tiernan running without the whole Nova team).

From guhoya.com
The Rundown • With Jonathan Green finishing fifth in 2015 and Scott Carpenter placing 10th in 2016, it is the first time since the 1964 and 1965 seasons that the Hoyas have posted back-to-back performances among the top 10 at the NCAA Championship meet. Joe Lynch put up an eighth-place showing in 1964 and Eamon O'Reilly was the national runner-up in 1965. • Scott Carpenter becomes the 11th Hoya in program history to turn in a top-10 performance at the NCAA Championships. He is the fourth to finish in 10th place, while the Blue & Gray have tallied one NCAA champion (Charlie Capozzoli, 1952), a pair of runner-up performances (1964, 1968), a duo of fifth-place finishes (2000, 2015) and a couple of eighth-place performances (1964, 2008).
The back to back top 10 performances echo the back to back top 10 performances from my era, as my classmate (and former American Marathon record holder) Eamon O'Reilly finished 2nd to Lawson of Kansas and Joe Lynch finished 8th. Both Joe and Eamon also won the IC4A XC run at Van Corlandt Park. The IC4A XC race was much bigger in those days, challenging the NCAA. Today the IC4A and ECAC XC meets were held, but the Hoyas did not participate. I thought maybe the women would.

Does Carpenter have XC eligibility for next year--would be great foundation for a podium result with 2 top 10 NCAA performers in Carpenter & Green
Also congrats to Sam Nadel--good to see Gtwn alum do well even if for another school--seems like she made right choice to do 5th yr at Oregon. Hope the women can bounce back but it seems that they are a couple of yrs away from being nationally competitive in xc again -next yrs recruits are 800 runners, so far at least, and the current team has 2 potential elites-both with injury issues-also not clear re focus on xc with the new coach

Julie Culley was a long-distance/cross country runner, so it's a little hard to imagine her not being focused on XC...

I don't know if Scott has XC eligibility for next year; it would be great if he did. If Fahy eligibility and Scott has, with Green and the nice freshmen from this year (plus the redshirt freshmen and Alvarado) we would definitely be a podium contender. That is, if we can remain injury free.
With Sam Nadel, the Hoyas make the NCAA this year. But good choice for her, since her transfer definitely helped Oregon win the title this year. The new recruits for next year have definitely been 800m runners. Belf and Hofstadt will form the core for next year's XC team. Margie Cullen came on during the season and Doody showed some XC potential. Also, the transfer Norris will be a good XC runner as she showed this year.

Congrats to Carpenter! Fantastic season for him.
Carpenter ran 3 meets one season. Not sure if he is redshirt eligible (thought you can run 2 and redshirt but not sure)
