Facebook posts suggest Dikembe helped pave the way for the kid to come to the U.S....he towers over Deke in a picture of the two outside Bullis. "Dikembe Mutombo added 18 new photos.Follow September 26 · We are very happy to see Watara arrived in the USA safely and he has been accepted at Bullis School. The MUTOMBO's family wish him the best. Thanks coach Bruce and the Bullis School. He is going to do well." My brother-in-law also towers over Deke.

The Bullis roster lists him as a 7’6” forward.
I’ve seen him in workouts (half court) and he is decent. Reminds me of Hibbert his first year, but bigger. I’m hoping to catch a Bullis game soon to see him get up and down the court.

Roy Hibbert played more minutes in a single game as a sophomore at Prep than Watara played all of last year at Bullis.

With JTIII gone, I thought the Roy Hibbert myth of "look what any stiff can become!" would have died. But nope, it somehow holds. Roy was a top 150 recruit and top 20 center in that class. Pulling Flo Thamba would be a better prospect ranking comparison than pulling some guy nobody has ever heard of.

I thought people were referring to him as a walk on, in which case he won't use up a scholarship. I see no harm in letting him walk on and force our centers to work against 7'6" in practice.

Did you guys watch the same high school Roy that I watched or are we suffering from some revisionist history? He got dominated night in and night out by guys 6-10 inches shorter than him, never finished around the rim, exhibited exactly zero of the skills that he developed at Georgetown. I say all this with the utmost respect for what Roy accomplished at Georgetown and in the NBA. He's an incredible worker. But man - he was not a good high school basketball player, even against weak competition.

I can tell you first hand that Roy was not a great HS player, he was overshadowed on the court by a few of his teammates. He clearly had height and did have some touch facing the rim but he definitely needed to put in the work and he did. My basketball career claim to fame is still blocking Roy once in a HS game (I think I blacked out the blocks he had against me).

Yup, If I remember correctly two other frontcourt players on his team were more productive.

A yet somehow he was consensus top 150 and dominated the Oregon player of the year everyone was drooling over in a tournament out west. People are mistaking "good high school player" with "good prospect." The kid in this thread doesn't see the floor. Roy was awkward at 17. Big difference.

He was on some radars, though, I'll give you that much. I remember he played well out west against top competition. I also remember the utter shock on Georgetown Prep campus when that happened. You must not have seen much more of his HS body of work beyond that one (truly, the only one) highlight.

Ah, Hoyatalk, where we use a speculative thread about a potential recruit to trash a beloved, NBA all-star Hoya.
