Wondering who, beside me, was affected by Hurricane Matthew.
My wife and I rode it out in Mount Pleasant SC. Was never really afraid but when it had finally passed by we found a backyard tree had split at the lower trunk and was hanging close to the house, a 16 foot section of our backyard wooden fence had fallen, and our nextdoor neighbors very tall tree had uprooted and fallen onto our front yard. We lost power but for only nineteen hours. Would not want to do this again in a while.
Have been really impressed by the first responders. Our cross-the-street neighbor, a North Charleston police officer, stopped by the see how we were while he was on the way to duty at 6:00 PM Friday and didn't return home until 2:00 the next afternoon and then told us he had to be back on duty in nine hours.
Governor Nikki Haley has been fabulout, addressing the public almost continuously, pleading for cooperation with authorities and sharing their priorities and statistics on such things as number of households without power or without water. She seemed to have complete knowledge of all related matters and was able effectively to communicate.
Anyone else have a runin with Matthew?

Ed, I'm glad you got through it with, relatively, minor damage and that you and yours are safe. I wish everyone affected could say the same. The rain totals were astounding.

Ed, thanks for updating us. I am glad that you and your wife are well and those fallen trees did not do more damage. Hope you keep well!

Happy it wasn't worse for you, Ed. Hurricanes scare the hell out of me, even if they aren't coming my way.
My friend has done much research in Haiti, and has been unable to reach several friends and one of her research assistants. I pray that they are all ok.

It's heartbreaking to see what little we get to see in the States of what Haiti has been through. They were never given the chance to recover before Matthew even hit. I know it's naive but we all, in the Western world, talk about a global economy and how small the world has become. But, somehow, when a storm hits, Haiti is a world away to us. I realize that it's not simple and there are local issues with regard to politics and corruption. But can't we help in a more effective way than we do? I'm not smart enough or educated enough to offer a solution outside of giving whatever money one can. But I'd be interested to hear the opinions of those that know more and know better.

She seemed to have complete knowledge of all related matters and was able effectively to communicate. While it's great that she made sure this had a lot of visibility, let's just say local emergency management officials aren't as happy with how she's been handling things, but I'll have to leave it at that. Hopefully she doesn't pick another person from the SC DMV to manage the recovery, like she did for the Oct 2015 flooding.

I am headed for Kiawah Island and Charleston (one of my favorite cities) on Saturday. Power still not completely restored on Kiawah, but I have the impression it was not as bad as it might have been. Glad you are largely ok Ed and prayers for Haiti.
