Assorted predictions for 2016: 1) Texas exceeds expectations, Charlie Strong stays in Austin. 2) Tennessee finally, finally, finally beats Alabama on the Third Saturday in October after a decade of losing. 3) Leonard Fournette wins the Heisman Trophy but LSU drops at least two winnable games due to Les Miles errors. 4) Michigan goes into the Ohio State game undefeated, Ohio State goes in with one loss (to Oklahoma). 5) UCLA wins the Pac 12 for the first time since 1998. 6) Baylor implodes. Week 1 Picks for Games that Matter Syracuse over Colgate* Colorado over Colorado State in the Rocky Mountain Showdown for the Centennial Cup Oklahoma over Cougar High (Houston) Georgia over N. Carolina Alabama over SC UTEP over New Mexico State in a Rio Grande Championship** game for the Silver Spade and the Brass Spittoon Ole Miss over Florida State Delaware over Delaware State in the Route 1 Rivalry for the First State Cup Prairie View A&M over Texas Southern in the Labor Day Classic for the Durley-Nicks Trophy *Yep, this is a rivalry, with its own Wikipedia page. Colgate leads the all-time series 31-30-5, so the Orange have a chance to pull even on Saturday.
**Previously awarded to the champ of the UTEP-UNM-NMSU series. UTEP and New Mexico don't play each other this year, so there will be no Rio Grande Champion in 2016. This designation has been officially defunct since the WAC days anyway, and "Rio Grande Championship" is now used to describe the contest between New Mexico and NMSU instead.

I would be very happy if all of these predictions proved to be correct (although Christian McCaffrey should have won the Heisman last year, so I'll be a little surprised if he doesn't win this year).
Just curious about your games that matter - Oklahoma - Houston and UCLA - Texas A&M don't matter? I'm sure there are a few other pretty good first week matchups that would also warrant a prediction from our college football savant.

Austin, who you got on LSU - Wisconsin? Current spread is 10, but at Lambeau? I think LSU wins, but Wisconsin covers.

Yeah - it won't be anything close to Death Valley (or even Camp Randall, in my suspicion), but it should be a fun atmosphere regardless.

Just curious about your games that matter - Oklahoma - Houston and UCLA - Texas A&M don't matter? I'm sure there are a few other pretty good first week matchups that would also warrant a prediction from our college football savant. Games that Matter are: 1) rivalry games; 2) trophy games; 3) games between ranked opponents; and 4) revenge games (replays of important games or surprise losses from the previous season). While UCLA-TAMU will be a fun game, it doesn't fall into any of those categories. Oklahoma-Houston is on the list. I think McCaffrey is extremely talented but doubt that he can't be neutralized. Notre Dame limited his production on the ground last season and the Cardinal had to beat the Irish with Jerry Hogan's arm instead. Hogan graduated. Stanford has a brutal early-season schedule and McCaffrey has the opportunity to come out of it as the Heisman front-runner if he produces against Top 20 opponents, but I'm betting he falls to the middle of the pack. Austin, who you got on LSU - Wisconsin? Current spread is 10, but at Lambeau? I think LSU wins, but Wisconsin covers. I agree with this. IIRC Wisconsin was fairly well prepared for another SEC opponent, Alabama, in last season's opener at Arlington (though they ultimately lost the game by a couple of TDs). I think the Badgers will play well and keep the score close, but LSU hangs on to a slim fourth quarter lead to win. Fournette will get his yards in this one though.

I'm not sure that the officials ever judged the hit on Hunter to be "safe." Frankly, that's the type of hit that many people (me included) would like to see eliminated from the game. WRT whether the hit was "legal," it appeared to me that the defender attempted to lead with his shoulder, but missed a target that was in motion. Do Bostonians request jalapeños on their Whataburgers and/or sub Texas toast for the bun? Obviously a huge win for Texas last weekend. I watched the game on television (my 1 year old is too young for DKR-Memorial Stadium) with the rest of America (huge TV ratings for the game) and came away very impressed with the new offensive system/playcalling. If the 'Horns can get through a tough early schedule (at Cal, at Oklahoma State, Red River Rivalry) unscathed then I'll be even more impressed. Week 2 Picks for Games That Matter East Carolina over NC State for the Victory Barrel Iowa over Iowa State for the Cy-Hawk Trophy* BYU over Utah in the Holy War (also a Beehive Boot game) New Mexico over NMSU in the Battle of I-25/Rio Grande Rivalry Austin Peay over Tennessee Tech in a Sgt. York Trophy game *Technically, the "Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Trophy"
There are zero matchups between Top 25 teams this week. Below is a list of those teams' opponents. I haven't calculated their average RPI, but I can guarantee it ain't pretty. Syracuse Central Michigan Prairie View A&M Nicholls Central Florida Lamar Troy Charleston Southern Akron SMU Nevada Western Kentucky Tulsa Wofford Idaho Florida Atlantic Louisiana-Monroe UTEP Arkansas Iowa State Jacksonville State Virginia Tech U. Va. Hopefully this boring week in CFB is the result of a BCS era scheduling hangover. This week's late-night West Coast games (Texas Tech @ Arizona State, Wazzu @ Boise State) are quite possibly the most interesting games on the schedule.

On the lighter side of the news, some sports scores:
10:17 1st Louisville 21 Syracuse 0
A long night for the Saltine Warriors. Former Georgetown QB Cam MacPherson saw some time in this one in a 62-28 loss.

I think I'm going to adopt Texas beat writer Mike Finger's position on the Oklahoma State-Central Michigan ending. Great play to end the game. Speaking of great plays to end games, Colorado plays Michigan at the Big House this Saturday, so here's a link to a clip of the most memorable Hail Mary play of my childhood. Week 3 Picks for Games that Matter Louisville over Florida State Wazzu over Idaho in the Battle of the Palouse* Alabama over Ole Miss Notre Dame over Michigan State for the Megaphone Trophy Oklahoma over Ohio State Illinois State over Eastern Illinois in the Mid-America Classic (a classically Mid-American name for a contest between two cornfield schools) Howard over Hampton in the Battle of the Real HU North Dakota over South Dakota for the Sitting Bull Trophy** New Hampshire over Dartmouth for the Granite Bowl (UNH is on a 20 game win streak dating back to the Ford Administration in this rivalry) *Here's a video of an interesting old tradition in this newly-renewed rivalry, in which the staff of the losing school's campus newspaper walked to the winning school's campus and sang the winning school's fight song (the schools are about eight miles apart): **Retired in 2000, "the inspiration for the trophy was a minor 1953 dispute over which state was home to the final resting place of the famed chief, after it was revealed that Sitting Bull's family members had exhumed and reinterred what they believed to be his remains, moving them from Fort Yates, North Dakota to Mobridge, South Dakota," per Wikipedia.

Personally, I'm enjoying the fact that Auburn-LSU game is a Loser Leaves Town match for Malzahn and Miles. I'm still shocked that Malzahn hasn't been able to build a successful offense at Auburn after what he was able to do with Nick Marshall.

Both coaches have won national championships, and Miles, eccentric though he may be, has won more than one. I know that the SEC thinks that every team (except maybe Vandy and Kentucky) should contend for a national championship every season, and I know that Auburn has mildly disappointed the last couple years, but this still seems preposterous to me.
