I'm taking the glass half-full view on the fact that through team matches, the team has pitched a shutout for all but one 8-minute stretch. The loss to Stanford was tough, and you could sense that it was only a matter of time before the Cardinal got on the board, but when I compare that match to my memories of the 4-1 defeat, I think the Hoyas have narrowed the gap. In that previous contest, they looked like they didn't belong on the same field. Here, they were clearly the inferior side, but they put forward a very game effort and looked significantly less out-classed. Again, excepting that 8-minute stretch of the second. Of course, this Stanford team may not be quite as good as the last one...
The new goalie, a transfer from UCLA, has good size and a real command presence in the box that I really liked. Dave's interview that Dan linked above is great and I definitely agree that the centerbacks and the keeper showed the best.
Only seen one game thus far, but on paper and at first glance, this team has the potential to go places. There's some really good experience on this squad, including a new graduate student who was the 2012 Ivy League rookie of the year and started every single game for Dartmouth. The ever-creative Crystal Thomas is back, Rachel Corboz is now a junior and should be able to continue doing Corboz things at a higher rate, and there are some freshmen making major contributions already. Could be a banner year!

Big, big win today.....Hard to not notice the big smile on Nolan's face.....More good shots on goal, some lapses of intensity, especially at the start of the two halves, but the ability to step it up.....After a disappointing loss to a superior Stanfurd side, this was the next ranked team that will effect NCAA consideration come November and the team stepped up well....You could see it in the reaction of the ladies on Rachel's OT goal.....Congrats ladies.

Rachel's goal is going to be watched and re-watched in every single film session by Hoya opponents for the next two years. The message: if you give her - or, hell, any Corboz - this much space, you deserve to lose.

What was really fun to watch in the replay was the surprise on the part of the goalie (who was out a bit too much--but still wouldn't have stopped that shot) or the Big 10 announcer that couldn't believe his Scarlet Knights just had lost. He almost seemed to be surprised that it was over. This win will count big at the end of the season. The rest of the Big East is looking so-so in their pre season games. Beating up on the cupcakes, losing to top 15 teams, and occasionally putting in a surprise.
I look for it to be G'town, Marquette, DePaul and Providence possibly(not sure on Butler). Looks like St. John's has fallen off post Rachel, and DePaul is not quite as strong as last year and the year before. Here's hoping.

Hoyas defeat Papua New Guinea by a final score of 6-0. No, that's not a sentence I ever expected to type either, nor did I ever expect to hear the Papuan national anthem played on campus, but here we are.
Despite the lopsided score in this scrimmage, which included two PKs (and could've included a couple more), there didn't appear to be any hard feelings:
