There is no way that Jess and Juliette still have eligibility for the Lady Broncos.
I like our chances.

Stirring stuff. Santa Clara is a talented, canny team - if young and uneven at times. They took down Southern Cal (the Hoyas' date in the semis) early in the season, to say nothing of the shocker they pulled off in Palo Alto. When facing teams with greater firepower, they have a gameplan to neutralize and counter and they've learned to execute it with dogged and frustrating persistence. So it was against the Cardinal and so it was today.
It quickly became clear that a major mistake or a burst of brilliance was going to be required for the game not to go to kicks from the spot. The Broncos were committed to keeping numbers behind the ball; aggressively crowding wingers to prevent the crosses that have become a Hoyas offensive staple; and packing the 18 with bodies to block longer shots, prevent free runs, and induce the referee to swallow his whistle (only the most egregious of fouls will draw a PK when the defender has twice as many players in the box).
Having executed that strategy as best as could possibly be expected given a 9 am Pacific time start in an unfamiliar climate on a decidedly un-Californian playing surface, Santa Clara took things one step further by challenging for the ball aggressively in the midfield, with those off the ball playing wait-and-see so they could rush back if the challenge failed. This led to the possibility of a rapid counter, albeit without immediate numbers. And that's exactly what happened on Santa Clara's best opportunity of the afternoon. The strategy almost worked, and the game was nearly theirs.
Instead, Schechtman made a tremendous one-on-one save, the Bronco attacker skied the rebound (as Carson Niazalek can tell you, what looks like a gimme on that pitch is not always so), and the Hoyas survived the mistake and were able to produce a stroke of brilliance.
The funny thing about the chosen approach to solving the Santa Clara defensive puzzle is that the failed attempts tend to look pretty sad. The idea is, when given space at range, take a crack at it and test the keeper. With a good swing and the wind at your back (in the second half), you have a chance to launch a real missile. And, indeed, the Hoyas have the cannoneers to get the job done: Damaska, Thomas, Corboz, and even Pak and Farrell have blasted shots from distance into the back of the net this season.
When it doesn't work, the ball misses everything or goes straight at the keeper, and it looks like a dumb, wasted effort. But when it works... wonderstrike.
Take a bow, Crystal Thomas. Bring out the whole cast of characters from behind the curtain and take a bow.

The Santa Clara coach, unsurprisingly, wants to claim the better chances in the game for his own side. Fine, whatever. The ominous clouds over his shoulder and his praise of Crystal's finish tell the tale.

Here's UVA's highlight reel from that tournament match, btw - including their coach's post-game comments. With facial expression and tone present, I'm willing to retract some of my peevishness toward him: his disappointment and annoyance at the wind is palpable, and the notion of a team cashing in on 5 of 6 or so SOGs is unusual to say the least, but he doesn't seem to be under any misapprehension about the fact that in soccer, you cannot lose the decisive moments and claim to have won the day.

I have a specific memory of attending one women's soccer game when I was a student (there were others, I believe, but none stuck with me). It was a 9-0 drubbing at the hands of Notre Dame. The Irish supplied the vast majority of the crowd in attendance, thanks in part to a VA local standout, and virtually all of the positive play. Had they kept up the pressure the whole game, it would've been worse. I know, it wasn't exactly yesterday I was on campus (my 20th high school reunion was this summer), but it wasn't that long ago either. Amazing that that program has now made the College Cup. I'm sure a different level of scholarship funding is part of the story, but in any event a great accomplishment with still more work to do. Congratulations to all involved in the sea change, and keep up the great work.
