ExcerptsBlaudschun reported there will be a twist in UConn’s presentation — the school will outline a plan for football-only membership in its pitch. That would involve moving UConn’s other sports to the reconstituted Big East, where the Huskies’ former Catholic, non-FBS football opponents went when the old Big East broke up. The plan would include a significant number of out-of-conference men’s and women’s basketball games against Big 12 schools.
Earlier this week, the Boston-based Blaudschun was the first to report UConn was considering leaving the American Athletic Conference and moving everything but football to the Big East if its Big 12 bid failed. In that instance, UConn would seek football-only membership in a “Group of 5” conference, most likely the Mid-American Conference.
Two days later, he wrote a commentary advocating UConn follow that road, concluding by saying the school “almost certainly accept the fact that the path for UConn football as a major player is now closed.”
In the last decade, UConn and the state built $91 million Rentschler Field and a $48 million football facility to further its big-time aspirations. The Huskies had modest success under former coach Randy Edsall, sharing two Big East titles, beating Notre Dame, South Carolina, Baylor and Virginia and holding their own against former Big East and current Power 5 schools West Virginia, Louisville, Syracuse, Pittsburgh and Rutgers. But the program plummeted under Paul Pasqualoni during the second wave of realignment, and now successor Bob Diaco is trying to keep the Huskies viable.

I can't imagine that the B12 will for a second consider a Uconn bid that does not include their two extremely attractive bball programs. Why would they do that? They hold all the cards and Uconn holds none without bringing hoops. I don't think anyone has any interest in the football-only type memberships anymore. Get in or get out would be my response to Uconn were I the Big12. And If I'm Uconn I'd be lunging to sign on for full big12 membership so fast my head would spin.
It is not exactly a well kept secret that Uconn is desperate to get into a power 5 fb conference at any costs and cannot be left without a chair the next time the music stops. They are in no position to make a half-hearted membership sell.

I can't imagine that the B12 will for a second consider a Uconn bid that does not include their two extremely attractive bball programs. Why would they do that? The short answer is that it's about adding football teams and the other sports aren't material when it comes to the TV contract. Storrs isn't exactly within reach of Lubbock or Ames for a women's volleyball game on Wednesday night. UConn would certainly take an all-sports bid but they're on the outside looking in right now if the Big 12 expanded by two, which increasingly points to Cincinnati and Houston. Much like BYU, they're a Option B if the TV contract grew as a result of a 14 team setup.

I still fail to see what they add to the BE from a financial stand point. Are they really worth the additional 10 mil in rights fees that would need to be generated to cover the current distribution assuming you add another team? Yes they would certainly solidify attendance for the BET and increase marginally teams home attendance but is it worth it for what could turn out to be for 2 or 3 years and max out at 7 or 8. I think Blaudshuns reporting ideas that have already been floated by others on boards since b12 made the original announcement. The non basketball move does make sense in that there are several million that can be saved throughout the league by reducing BBall and Olympic traveling expenses. Bye the same token moving a group of 110 or more for 5 games in football has a hefty tab. In the end Uconn is angling for a spot in the ACC or B10 and will do whatever it takes to get a foot in P5 conference.

Pretty sure the Big East TV deal has automatic escalators if we go to 12 teams, but that's small potatoes compared to what Fox could be looking at for Big XII.
Anyone know how the Big XII TV deal would increase if they added BYU and UConn as football only members?

There are people who care about a fig leaf entry in to NYC metro area market.

There are people who care about even a tenuous entry in to NYC metro area market. If I were a Big12 football person I would only want to add BYU and Houston and would steer well clear of fb-only memberships.

Expanding into the New York City market made some sense, arguably, for the Big Ten. They have their own network, and bringing Rutgers into the fold potentially expanded the viewer base for BTN into the largest market. The Big 12 does not have its own network, and I think that they'd be overstating the interest in college football in the New York City market. Unless you have a large alumni base devoted to a specific sport, there is really no interest for the casual fan in college football here. I don't see how the Big 12 would be interested in UConn for football-only, because even UConn fans and alums have failed to demonstrate any great passion for college football.
As for UConn potentially joining the Big East for all sports save football, I'm with sleepy on this one. The Big East would just be setting itself up as a jilted conference, again, if UConn is able to jump to the ACC or Big Ten in the future. Unless and until UConn gives up on D-1 football (which is unlikely due to the financial commitment made by the school and the state), I don't think bringing UConn into the Big East would do anything but set the Big East up for future disappointment. Santayana is right. . .those who forget history are condemned to repeat it.
