Returning to the actual topic...on the whole the convention felt like it was written by Aaron Sorkin and produced by John Wells and Tommy Schlamme. The Dems overcame the rocky start with a number of well-delivered speeches and a good job of bringing (almost) everyone together. Plenty of shots against Trump, but also plenty of focus on Hillary's experience and strengths.
After the fantastic speeches by Michelle, Bill, the VP, the President, and others, Thursday was bound to be anticlimatic. Hillary's strength has never been public speaking, and Chelsea takes after her mother more than her father as well. But they both did just fine. Tim Kaine was also so-so but I'm not voting for either to give speeches.
Rather than sit back and let the Democrats have their week, Trump's insistence on doubling down on all of the things that are so wrong with him drew such a sharp contrast that I actually saw lifelong Republicans finally give up and vocally stand up in support of Hillary. I'm thinking it will be a bit more than a +3 bump, but we'll see.
Onto the general election. This is definitely one for Hillary to lose, but the Dems have demonstrated an uncanny ability to shoot themselves in the foot so far (Bernie's intransigence, the DNC nonsense, Hillary's own email past) that I'm confident we will have plenty of twists and turns between now and November.

Rather than sit back and let the Democrats have their week Why should he remain quiet this week? Other than that was the common courtesy until Obama came along and decided not to follow along? And it's not like the Dems were quiet last week.

Totally agree. I'm glad that you concur that Donald Trump's use of humor in his comments on Russia and Hillary's missing emails was such a smart play. Give it up, man. You sound more ridiculous every time you post in this thread. No, you need to give it up and stop crying wolf.

I am imagining Gene Hackman's character, Brill, in Enemy of the State. Except our "man yells at the moon" version is wearing a Hoyas ball cap. Good movie. I watched Will Smith film a scene on the streets near campus. Gotcha, kc, you name dropper.

And it's not like the Dems were quiet last week. The Dems got karmic retribution for their gloating and taunting. I'm not saying he had to do that or even that he should have done that. But the choices he made this week were bizarre and actively pushed people away. One of the tentpoles of the DNC this week was to highlight just how unserious, unprepared, unthoughtful, mean, and dangerous Trump is, and Trump then went ahead and continued to do all of the things that the Dems were attacking him for. Wouldn't it have made more sense to prove them wrong? The strategy (if there is one) must be to double down to the people that are drawn to his behavior and antics, so if that is the strategy, I suppose that's working. Whether it is actually going to be successful remains to be seen.

Not sure he wouldn't quit either if he won

Whether it is actually going to be successful remains to be seen. I know he has gotten this far, but do you think Trump really wants to be President? Of course he does. It's the highest office in the USA. He may not want to do the work but I have no doubt he wants the title and the institutional respect it would afford him. No sane person would give him that respect personally. As a, likely, clinical narcissist, bet everything you own that he wants the title. There are a few uncorroborated reports about how much of the actual work of the office he's willing to concede to others. Keep in mind, he's unabashedly clueless with regard to domestic policy, foreign relations, economics, etc., etc., etc., and he has yet to put any actually work to up his game in any of those areas. He's running for prom king. The win is the goal. The business of governing seems to be way down the list of his priorities. Personally, I detest them both. But I'd be interested to watch a debate between them about issues. Hilary sucks as a person and as a public official. She lacks integrity and has no desire to tether anything she says to truth. But she's far more intelligent and knowledgeable than Trump on anything remotely related to foreign policy, diplomacy, governing, immigration, free trade, climate change.... The list is long. I'm trying to hope that the next election cycle will afford me the luxury of not voting for the slightly less detestable person. They're both detestable even for the very low standards that we currently have for politicians. Remember, way back when, we were able to vote out of a sense of promise as opposed to a sense of a less foul smell?
