You are being condescending again, that's a surprise to this board. Are you saying that's not a racially insensitive comment to talk about slaves being treating very well? Seems like an oxymoron type statement but obviously I don't command the language like you. You either are just an apologist for the party and Trump which I can understand or you are far worse in your views of things race related. Talking about slaves being treated well? It's clear you didn't even listen to the piece. You're even dumber than I thought. Why don't you quote the language YOU have trouble with and tell me why that language is inaccurate and racist. Why the focus on inaccuracy? Does it seriously evade you that something can be both accurate and insensitive? Imagine a TV personality were to observe that President Obama likes to play basketball and his co-host replied, "well, he's black." That's true, but not an appropriate remark to make.

I'm dumb but you can't see the problem with talking about slaves that "were well-fed and had decent lodgings" (not sure how that does that not capture being treated well?) to downplay the other party's speech talking about how far this country has come on race relations. Keep up the attacks and name calling. Keep digging yourself in deeper rather than admitting you're wrong. At least we can see you for what you are.

One of my ancestors put it like this:
"Yassir, Mr. Charlie, I sho do ‘preciate how well youse feedin’ me and dat nice barn I gets to sleep in while we's buildin' yo big house….
‘Scuse me for askin’, but can I have somethin’ different to eat and a real bed to sleep on? And do I have to work from can’t see in da mornin’ to can’t see at night all da time? And my family in Carolina, can I see dem again ‘fo I die? Please, suh? Sorry, suh, I ain’t tryin’ to be uppity; jus askin’. Humbly, suh. But thank youse for da food and da barn. We's mos' grateful."
Smh
I listened to the spiel in its entirety. Among the many problems with O’Reilly’s characterization is that it immediately made me wonder what his source is for making the offending remarks. Well-fed and had nice housing. Yeah, right. I seriously doubt there’s any record to that effect. And by whose determination was the food and housing all that? At another point he says that “They stopped hiring slave labor in 1802.” Really? Uh, you mean they stopped paying slave owners to use slaves, ‘cause by definition, the slaves weren’t employed by anyone. Used is more like it.
The commentary seems like an unnecessary spin that he felt compelled to put out there. Very sad.

I think that the White House Historical Association is also insensitive and should take down its website. www.whitehousehistory.org/questions/did-slaves-build-the-white-house

O'Reilly is a braying jackass who is interested in ratings. He is not alone in that status. In fact, he lies squarely within the vast majority of all television personalities.
What he said is so monumentally stupid that it really merits no debate. Irrespective of the " conditions", living as the property of another in not fit for any human, period.

He was ignorant for making the statement. You are ignorant for defending him and the statement. Context matters. Did you even listen to the piece? He praised Michelle Obama, then he spent 90 seconds talking about how the White House was built, with slaves being a part of that. Please tell me how he was being ignorant. You're really trying hard to be outraged on something so innocuous. This was the television equivalent of me of those roadside historical markers. It may be innocuous in your eyes, but far from so in mine. Founders Online: From Abigail Smith Adams to Cotton Tufts, 28 November 1800Hmmm...

kc, I don't get your point re: the Historical Association. There is no point. He's trying to defend someone who was (for political reasons) downplaying the effectiveness of the point by the first lady that the white house being built by slaves from hundreds of years ago to having an African-American family occupying the white house as the first family is somehow not really what it seems because those slaves were given decent lodging and well fed which somehow makes it less impactful of a statement in their minds. I'll give KC the benefit of the doubt that he/she is blindly supporting the party and the message which is hard to do in this election but he's trying. I know he's much smarter than all of us but somehow he's mixing this one up for sure. However, like the party pundits, just too stubborn to say it was a dumb argument and I apologize.

Doesn't take much smarts to be pessimistic and cynical.

I cited to the WHHA because a 5-second Google search led me to their website, which contains the same information.

No one is disputing that. Surely you're not trying to use a letter written 54 years before the founding of the Republican Party to pin this on the GOP.

"[D]ownplaying the effectiveness of the point by the first lady[.]" You're totally right, a 90-second segment at the end of his hour show, where he begins by stating Michelle Obama's statement was "a positive comment" was totally attacking the First Lady. "Blindly supporting the party[.]" Where does "the party" come in to this issue? This wasn't the GOP making the statements, nor Donald Trump, it was Bill O'Reilly. Maybe you should go back and watch it again, this time with your hearing aid in Grandma.

If you are as smart as you claim you wouldn't blindly talk about historical accuracy that slaves were treated "well" (I won't quote the speech which I've done so refer back if you need to understand the connection). What's the point of acting like slaves being treated well is something that should diminish the message of that speech. I'm trying to stick up for you as just an apologist but perhaps you are an idiot. I'm trying to give you an out but keep digging.

I am imagining Gene Hackman's character, Brill, in Enemy of the State. Except our "man yells at the moon" version is wearing a Hoyas ball cap.
