but why do they also list DeVry Institute Of Technology (Atlanta, Georgia) under Hoyas? NO! thats not possible! DeVry doesn't sponsor athletic teams any more. In the early 1990's, they fielded a NAIA II basketball team under the name Hoyas, but no longer do so. However, there is a high school in Atlanta called the Harrison Hoyas. www.cobb.k12.ga.us/~harrison/general.asp

Isn't Georgetown Prep also the Hoyas?
I mean, on one hand I guess it's different but on the other, no it isn't.

Georgetown Prep's nickname is the "Little Hoyas," although, yes, they do display Hoyas on their uniforms. Speaking of Prep, check out the front page where DFW posted a Washington Examiner article detailing the construction of Prep's $35 Million (!) athletic center to be inaugurated in the Fall of 2006, complete with an indoor track, basketball court, pool and 6,000 square foot weight training facility!!!!! Do you think the Prep Jesuits will allow GU athletic staff to take recruits out to Rockville while GU admin and donors diddle around finishing up the MSF and the renovation of McDonough by 2015?!

I went to a Prep game at American University to see Roy play during his senior year and they do wear the same uniforms. The only difference was that instead of a name on the back they had the GP logo.

Oh, not this again. Jack DeGioia knew exactly what students and alumni were talking about, but was probably willing to give Craig at least another year to turn it around. But when Craig went out and essentially said "I'll be here 30 years (i.e., long after my boss is) it was an affront. His position didn't change, but his employee's position did. But as to Marquette...how PC can one place be? Anyone who buys the idea from the S.J.'s in Milwaukee that the only Warriors out there wear Indian headresses are either foolish or deceitful. Alexander the Great was a Warrior. So was Joan of Arc. George S. Patton was a Warrior. There were warriors in the Bible. Or as the book of Judges put it, "They recite the righteous acts of the LORD, the righteous acts of his warriors." Enough of the PC nonsense. Give the Marquette community a name with a new mascot and let's get going. The idea is that no one can ever hear "Marquette Warriors" without thinking about Willie Wampum the mascot and the Indianhead logo. While I disagree, its not an entirely untenable or absurdly PC position. Your personal prefs aside, I'd like to see what ever Marquette's new nickname is show up on the hoyasaxa site.

It will be weird when we play them and they sing their fight song: Marquette "Ring Out Ahoya!" Ring out Ahoya with an M.U.Rah Rah Hey, M.U.Rah Rah Hey, M.U.Rah Rah Rah Rah Rah Ring out Ahoya with an M.U. Rah, Rah Hey, M.U. Rah Rah for Old Marquette. U. Rah! Rah! Even my Alumni family agree that it is the dumbest of all fight songs. As lousy as the fight songs words may be, I hate to say it but the tune is far catchier than the long, drawn out Gtown fight song tune. It also conjures better memories for me--maybe because I associate it with a shocking 1994 Sweet Sixteen and the 2003 Final Four, while my Gtown memories don't quite matchup. Our fight song makes me think of a large, empty MCI Center, or the bus ride on the way back from ESCAPE. It definitely doesn't make me think "tourney time". Let's hope that changes, and fast.

Makes me think of domination and a National Championship, but I guess it all depends when you hear it!

The idea is that no one can ever hear "Marquette Warriors" without thinking about Willie Wampum the mascot and the Indianhead logo. While I disagree, its not an entirely untenable or absurdly PC position. Agree to disagree. It is untenable because, frankly, the MU Jesuits are using P.C. to hide behind the fact that they are not willing to rehabilitate the nickname as other schools have successfully done. Prior to 1980, the Syracuse mascot was the Saltine Warrior. They sucessfully used Otto the Orange into a new image for the teams. Today, very few people thing "Indian" when they see Syracuse. Prior to 1970, Oklahoma's mascot was a character named "Little Red" who danced on the sidelines at games. Today, no one thinks "Indian" when they see the Sooners. If Marquette really wanted to, they could identify the Warrior with Spartans, with Romans, with medieval knighs, any number of Catholic saints and marytys for the faith, or even with our own military, for that matter. The word warrior is not and has never been exclusively Indian, as opposed to say, Redskin. And, if properly positioned to its community, I think most MU fans would put away the Indian garb if it meant a consensus for a new identity to an old name. Instead, Fr. Wild seems intent on waving the PC banner to show how open-minded his school is while saying that all the suggestions have equal value, except for one.
