There is also less big time TV exposure. For those critics that want to fire JTIII, that is a pipe dream This is definitely true, but things have been slowly improving. I think Fox Sports made a very smart decision in moving the Big East Tournament championship game to the Fox network, which helped boost ratings considerably: "FOX scored a 0.9 final rating and 1.4 million viewers for last Saturday’s Seton Hall/Villanova Big East Tournament final, up 350% in ratings and 231% in viewership from Villanova/Xavier last year (0.2, 414K) and up 80% and 95%, respectively, from Providence/Creighton in 2014 (0.5, 702K). Both last year and in ’14, the game aired in primetime on Fox Sports 1. The Pirates’ win ranks as the second-most watched college basketball telecast yet on the Fox Sports family of networks." For what it's worth, the Big 10 Championship hugely outdrew the Big East (a 2.2 rating; 3.2 million viewers), but that was down 15% in ratings from the previous year and 18% in viewership. This was the lowest rating for the Big 10 championship since 2008. For reference, there was a Cavaliers/Clippers game at the same time that had a 1.6 rating, with 2.5 million viewers. I firmly believe that the college basketball ratings largely have to do with the platform than the product. The BET final this year was great basketball. The biggest problem is that people are accustomed to tuning into CBS or ESPN for big time basketball in March, not Fox or Fox Sports 1. With added exposure over the years, this should get better. I do firmly believe that if the BET final had been on CBS or ESPN, the ratings would have been significantly better, probably double what they were. It does mean we get less exposure (for now), but Fox made a long term commitment to the Big East, pays the Big East a substantial sum, and gives us far better placement than ESPN ever would.

ESPN is falling apart. They just let go Tirico and Bayless and cowherd already left for Fox. Disney is losing tons of money on Shanghai and need money for Star Wars land, Avatarland and toy story land. Disney also just closed Infinity and their video game footprint. ESPN is one of their biggest money losers so expect ESPN to decline further and further.

S..., you boy's drinking your Kool-Aid could mean two other Hoya fans in the building means we are reporting record numbers. Anyone think that eagle54 really talks like this? Of course I do at the deli counter all day. That meat isn't going to cut itself.

Minus the product getting better I think you have to focus your efforts on the incremental 5K fans. That would exclude anyone on this board and most people in DC. You need to play into the alumni base and the DMV locals with some interest in basketball/Georgetown. I don't see Georgetown focusing on that incremental fan base.
More alumni outreach and hype would be a start. I agree pumping more money into local clubs that are close to DC is a good idea. I'm in California and would love more attention but understand why that's not going to happen.
As for local fan base, I think you need to target schools. A college basketball game is significantly cheaper activity than taking kids to a professional sporting event. That also means you need to change the in game atmosphere to make it more of a family based event. At games I would want to see the Georgetown brand being pumped into the face of every attendee instead of the feeling like Georgetown is a guest in the arena.
Focus on getting a few extra hundred and build off of that. This is not a short term solution but will pay dividends in the long run when you have grown the number of local kids who follow Georgetown.

One other idea for improving the fan base would be to remove kchoya from it. Addition by subtraction works in many walks of life and I think we have a nice fit here. He serves no purpose on this board.
Sorry Dan.

Still doesn't dismiss the theory that KC is Dan's alter ego. Dan is nice and the mod and KC is his other side. Also, for the record I'm used to the bullying I take by having an honest view versus blind loyalty. I accept that. I just point out what this board does to those that have differing opinions when I say that. You all are not the most welcoming for debate of what is actually happening. If you are new and want to fit just order the Hoya Pills and all will be good. You won't have an opinion which is what this board likes.

There are over 125 teams in the country that are just average or below. The HOYAS are one of them. That's life. Sooner or later the admin will get tired of losing money and make a change. We are not there yet. We will have the bigs this year, but as Glide says, we need a point guard and a shooting guard to show up this year.

I do have colleagues in the DC area that have no relation to our school or program but when we are a top 25 team and playing well they will go against a good opponent The biggest issue with our fanbase is that too many of them (who actually DO have a relation to our school or program) feel the same way. A lot of Hoya fans will only show up if the team AND the opponent are good. In 2008 - with the springboard of a Final Four season and a team that was good all season long - we sold out (or came really close to selling out) against the likes of UConn, ND, Syracuse. And 8,316 people showed up to watch us play South Florida.

Cheaper concession prices will definitely help more casual fans want to spend an afternoon or evening at Verizon.
