The historic Penn Relays start tomorrow. As usual the Hoyas will have several teams competing for the championship of American titles. I think the women's 4x800m will be the best bet to win a title. Also, the women's DMR (indoor NCAA champs) will be in the mix. But Katrina Coogan, who anchored the winning DMR title is listed as entered in the 5000m, so I don't know if she is running the relays. As of last week the lineups were not definite.
The men should be competitive, but I am not sure that Amos Bartelsmeyer is healthy, so that would weaken some of our relays.

The entry lists do not have Katrina in the 5000m now. Instead Haley Pierce,Sarah Cotton, Maddy Perez, and Autumn Eastman are entered. In the 3000m Sam Nadel and Audrey Belf are entered. In the men's 5000m John Murray and Connor Sheryak are entered and Jon Green is listed in the 10,000m. In the Olympic Development 3000m SC is alumnus Matt Howard. The main relay is the women's DMR.

One person within 3 seconds of her 800 split, next person a full 5 seconds back. Great leg!! It is chilly and windy, so Sabrina's time in that context was remarkable. As quickplay said, nobody near her.

It seems as if most of our runners are opting out of the individual events (bad weather conditions?), so no Sam and Audrey in the 3000m, no Haley, Sarah, Maddy, and Autumn in the 5000m. Darren Fahy was supposed to run the SC, but he is not listed in the results. John Murray wanted to get a PR in the 5000m, so we will see if he runs.

Four men ran the 5000m with John Murray indeed getting his PR as he finished 2nd in a sub-14 minute time. The top 10:
1 6 Brian Barraza Houston 13:52.52 1 2 13 John Murray Georgetown 13:56.61 1 3 7 Austin Whitelaw Tennessee 13:58.54 1 4 19 Mark Chandler Indiana 13:59.83 1 5 1 Shaun Thompson Duke 14:04.08 1 6 21 Kevin Tree Lakehead 14:07.36 1 7 26 Hassan Omar UMBC 14:08.93 1 8 4 Jimmy Clark Florida 14:09.82 1 9 17 Colin Abert Penn State 14:10.66 1 10 14 Eddie Garcia Florida 14:10.83 1
Also, 29. Connor Sheryak 14:30.92 43. Reilly Bloomer 14:36.74 63. Nick Wareham 15:00.1

And in the 10000m, Michael Crozier finished 2nd in what is probably his PR. The top 10:
1 8 Liam Hillery Providence 29:22.38 2 18 Michael Crozier Georgetown 29:32.76 3 5 Glen Burkhardt Penn State 29:45.74 4 3 August Pappas Michigan 29:48.61 5 10 Andrew Tario Iona 29:52.75 6 19 Barrett Kemp Buffalo 29:55.52 7 34 Moses Aloiloi Tulane 30:02.99 8 26 Mohamed Hussein Amherst 30:05.88 9 17 Aaron Hanlon Providence 30:06.29 10 30 Mike O'Dowd Iona 30:17.69

From the Penn Relays website:
In the early evening, the Georgetown women delivered the first big result of the 2016 Relays, beating four-year reigning champs Villanova in the College Women’s Distance Medley Championship of America Invitational. Villanova held a thin lead at the end of the first leg and it was Georgetown’s Heather Martin who closed the gap in the second leg. "I was glad that we were not in the lead when I got the baton,” Martin explained in the post-race press conference, “because I like having someone to chase down when I run." Chase down she did, and the Hoyas pulled away in the third leg for Georgetown’s first victory in this event since 2011.

There goes the triple as the women came in 3rd in a very close 4x1500m race. Speculation was that the Hoyas might pull off the triple (DMR, 4x1500, and 4x800), but the 4x1500 would be the toughest challenge. It ended up that it was as the top three were within 1.16 s of each other over 6000m. Don't have the splits yet. The top three:
1 Villanova 17:44.29 Bella Burda, Sammy Bockoven, Nicole Hutchinson, Siofra Cleirigh Buttner A 2 Oregon 17:44.67 Emma Abrahamson, Ashley Maton, Alli Cash, Annie Leblanc B 3 Georgetown 17:45.45 Kennedy Weisner, Audrey Belf, Katrina Coogan, Andrea Keklak C

The 4x1500m seems to be the bad luck relay for the women as either they have not won a Penn championship in this race or only one. This was Villanova's 10th victory in the 4x1500m.

The splits:
1 Villanova 17:44.29 Bella Burda (4:29.7), Sammy Bockoven (4:22.7), Nicole Hutchinson (4:30.2), Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (4:21.7) A 2 Oregon 17:44.67 Emma Abrahamson (4:26.7), Ashley Maton (4:23.6), Alli Cash (4:28.0), Annie Leblanc (4:26.3) B 3 Georgetown 17:45.45 Kennedy Weisner (4:25.3), Audrey Belf (4:29.4), Katrina Coogan (4:21.7), Andrea Keklak (4:29.1)
It looks as if the Hoyas were winning up until the final leg. I am not sure how Andrea ran that slow, because her split for the 1500m was only four seconds faster than her indoor mile Georgetown record. It might be that leading the final 1500m without anybody ahead of her caught up with her. I guess maybe Katrina should have anchored again as she and Buttner for Nova had the fastest splits. Kennedy ran a very good split.
The times this year have been slower than in previous years, which reflects the bad weather conditions at Penn this year.

Not a win for the men in the DMR, but the next best thing, as all four runners ran very good legs. The top five teams:
1 Penn State 9:35.51 Robby Creese (2:57.01), Alex Shisler (47.77), Isaiah Harris (1:49.96), Brannon Kidder (4:00.77) AC 2 Georgetown 9:36.32 Cole Williams (2:58.63), Daniel Anderson (48.69), Joseph White (1:47.75), Ahmed Bile (4:01.25) AD 3 Penn 9:37.25 Chris Hatler (2:57.81), Jeff Wiseman (46.82), Elias Graca (1:51.20), Thomas Awad (4:01.42) AG 4 Oklahoma State 9:37.49 Matthew Fayers (2:59.60), Tyler Jackson (47.15), Tre'Tez Kinnaird (1:49.05), Joshua Thompson (4:01.69) AB 5 Villanova 9:39.10 Ben Malone (2:57.74), Harry Purcell (47.92), Ville Lampinen (1:49.60), Jordan Williamsz (4:03.84)

Andrea + Oregon runner made a tactical error on anchor leg. Gtwn/Oregon had a big lead and they let the Vill runner,an 800 specialist, back into the race. The vill runner easily outkicked Andrea + Oregon runner. Katrina was behind on third leg but ran a great lag and handed a big lead with Oregon to Andrea. I think Andrea would have been outkicked by the Oregon runner too, she would have had to run a fast leg to win-which she is obviously capable of doing.

Joe's leg was especially outstanding. Isaiah Harris is one of the new stars in the 800 and Joe beat him by over two seconds.

The Villanova anchor in the 4x1500m is the same who was DQ'ed in the indoor 800m for pushing two Hoyas in her attempt to get into the lead.

Ah, bummer about the 4x1500. I thought they would win this one but maybe face some stiff competition in the 4x800. Ok St and Oregon both have really good teams.
Great effort in both the men's and women's DMR. Congrats to the women on the win. Also, nice runs for Murray and Crozier.
