Didn't see this thread before I posted on the other one. Very sad news for those of us old enough to remember the way the Big East became "must-watch" in person and on the television. Rest in peace, Pearl.

Hated what he did to us for 4 years. But man, did he have a sweet game. So very sad for him to leave so young. Prayers for his family.

Truly entertaining player, whom I enjoyed watching play, despite the fact that he went to Syracuse.

Washington was part of the remarkable 1986 NBA draft that sent a record 66 players into the NBA, yet only one of the top 20 draft picks (Brad Daugherty) ever made an NBA All-Star Game.
Daugherty was (and is) a huge NASCAR fan, so much so that his number at UNC and in the pros (43) was in honor of Richard Petty's #43 stock car.
1. Brad Daugherty - North Carolina 2. Len Bias - Maryland (died two days after draft) 3. Chris Washburn - NC State (Early entry) 4. Chuck Person - Auburn 5. Kenny Walker - Kentucky 6. William Bedford - Memphis State (Early entry) 7. Roy Tarple - Michigan 8. Ron Harper - Miami OH 9. Brad Sellers Ohio St. 10. Johnny Dawkins - Duke 11. John Salley - Georgia Tech 12. John (Hot Plate) Williams- LSU (Early entry) 13. Dwayne Washington - Syracuse (Early entry) 14. Walter Berry - St. John's 15. Dell Curry - Virginia Tech 16. Maurice Martin - Saint Joseph's 17. Harold Pressley - Villanova 18. Mark Alarie - Duke 19. Billy Thompson- Louisville 20. Buck Johnson - Alabama

Amazing how many in the top 7 of this list had serious drug problems (like Pearl). Bias, Washburn, Bedford and Tarpley just off the top of my head.

Don't know if Bias had a serious drug problem per se, (except for overdosing). I believe he would have been the best player in that draft. Roy Tarpley also deceased Shocked that Chuck Person never made an All-Star team.

I'm actually surprised that Ron Harper never made an All-Star team, as he had some big seasons prior to joining the Bulls. Also has 5 rings.
Number 15 gets legacy credit.

I believe he would have been the best player in that draft. Roy Tarpley also deceased Shocked that Chuck Person never made an All-Star team. I believe 1 or 2 of Len Bias' teammates testified in Brian Tribble's trial(early 1987??) that they had been using cocaine with Len Bias since the beginning of his JR year in late 1984. L.Bias was perceived to be a clean-cut guy and his death was so shocking that people wanted to believe that the night he died was his first time using cocaine. I was also surprised that Ron Harper never made an All-Star team. He was a poor man's Michael Jordan(and that's not meant to be a slight to him) early in his NBA career before he tore up his knee in his 3rd or 4th year. It's interesting that this 86 draft which ended up being a somewhat sad/tragic event because of what ended up happening to the top picks(drug overdose, permanent ban for drugs, substance abuse problems, etc.)produced one of the most outrageous characters in NBA history...Dennis Rodman!!! Mark Price and Scott Skiles were also late picks in this draft. I agree with you guys about Pearl Washington's great ability at Syracuse. He was definitely one of the most electrifying players in the history of college basketball, in my opinion.

A Pearl of an athlete and a Prince of a musician, taken too early. May they rest in peace, always.
